I hope this video will bring back memories for many. I have spent many hours producing this short video from my old Cine Film of the 1970's, it shows Deltic's and other diesels Through Spalding plus Class 76 Electrics over the Woodhead route, The Quality is way down on todays standard but that's all we had in those days.

Absolutely fabulous. Growing up in the 70’s the only one downside to watching this is it reminds me of times when this country seemed much better ( which I’m sure some will disagree with )

Stupot ,you are correct, for all its ills I would go back to the 70's in a heartbeat! Alas ,though we were too young to realise it, the country was under attack from within by Cultural Marxist's and clossett Communists as another poster has highlighted ! Fast forward to the present, luckily people are finally waking up although I don't ever see England returning to the civilised country it was. Regards.

I think what I need to say has already been said by the majority of individuals who have witnessed this fantastic footage of 1970s railway history..... Bloody fantastic!!! This was my era for loco spotting, from the early 70s til the early 80s.... I live near Bristol, so Deltics were an absolute rarity and had to travel to King's Cross to see them..... I remember Colossus the class 47. And got the entire set of Westerns, also the entire set of Class 47s, the last one being at Haymarket, near Edinburgh..... Happy childhood days.... Thank you so much for posting this historic video of railway footage....

Me to..I grew up in Birmingham and the Birmingham to Bristol railway line ran just at the back of my house and towards the bottom of my garden so as a kid in the 1970s and early 80's and especially during the school summer holidays me and my mates sat on the bank all day watching the trains go by..and yes you're spot on Deltics were a rarely seen thing even on that stretch of line but tons and tons of 45 peaks 47's Duffs and by the late 70s early 80's the new HST'S..also a real treat was seeing on occasions the two 37 lickey bankers that rolled past a few times a week..really happy times

Great sequence I grew up on the ECML in the late sixties and seventies so these locos were very familiar to me. We also spent three holidays not far from the Woodhead line in the mid seventies and I would usually spend a couple of days spotting (when the weather was nice) whilst the family went off to visit a stately home. I realise the railway had to modernise but it had so much more variety and character back then despite the rundown appearance of many of the stations and infrastructure. Thanks for taking the time to post.

Fantastic film and takes me back. I remember when I first saw the intercity 125s and thought I was seeing the future. In fact I was, the fact GWR and Scotrail have refurbished and are using them extensively shows how much of the future they were. 45 years and they still look modern and are still doing a great job. The old BR often got a bad name but those trains were inspired. A testament to British design and engineering.

The Deltics especially as I chased them up and down the ECML from 1977-81 bagging them all except 1 & 20 which I saw in service a couple of times each and at Doncaster Works as they rusted away until 1980.....55019 was my machine with nearly 3600 miles behind her

Thank you Roy for transferring these old films to digital to get them on to KZfaq, I know that was a lot of work doing that. Two of my favourite spotting places as well. Essendine in steam days, we used to spend many a Sunday afternoon picnicing on that manicured flat embankment, now it is just a mess like many other places. Woodcroft was a nice place in the 70/80s but the footbridge is no more. Then all those Deltics through Spalding, shear bliss with that throbbing noise.👍👍👍👍👍

My two favourite class’s , 55 Deltic and the class 76 electrics , had a fantastic view of the wath branch of the woodhead route from my bedroom window and went to Doncaster to see the Deltics, both withdrawn at the same time 1981, went to reddish and guide bridge to say my farewell to the 76’s and to Doncaster works to say farewell to the Deltics , it was sad seeing both classes in long scrap lines awaiting they’re fate , thankfully six Deltics one EM1 76 were preserved along with two EM2 77 ex woodhead coco’s after their service in Holland, strange that the EM2’s sold as surplus in the late sixties out lasted the class 76’s, the Dutch got a bargain.

Simply wonderful stuff. I think mid 70s to early 80s was the best era on BR, especially for diesels. That said, the 76s are particular favourites and I made several journeys over the Woodhead route and through the tunnel. Seeing double-headed 76s on coal including mgr is ingrained in my brain.

This was in my spotting era, 1975 to early 80's. Loved it! I used to spot on the WCML at Leyland where I lived, electrics galore, plus plenty of DMU's. Not many diesel loco's though. Used to go to places like York for a complete contrast (no wires back then) and many other places around the country on "trips". I've still got my Ian Allen books and even some of the hand written records of my trip days out. Love watching footage like this, it really takes me back to my "misspent youth". Thanks Roy!

Glad you enjoyed it Ian, I am glad that I took it and have managed to transfer it to the modern media we have now, I have got some footage of Leyland taken in 1988 and hope to put it on sometime so keep watching.

That brought back a lot of memories! How did you manage to keep the camera so steady when stood on the platform next to Pinza?! What I remember was the Deltics made the whole ground shudder. Nice to see the old DC engines - I spent quite a few hours on Penistone station as a young teenager waiting for them to pass through.
