Highest Railroad Bridge In Eastern United States Over Navigable Stream! People Taking Selfies On Bridge Between Trains. Norfolk Southern Trains Sharing Cloud Space With Airplanes. Lol. Trains With DPU Locomotives, Steel Trains, Mixed Freights And A Caboose At High Bridge State Park In Kentucky. This Is The Norfolk Southern Rat Hole Line Being Sold By Cincinnati To Norfolk Southern.
I returned to High Bridge Kentucky with Scott 1960gambit. This was the first cantilever bridge built in the world. It is 1,125 feet long and 308 feet above the Kentucky River. This is not the original bridge. This bridge was rebuilt in 1911 using the same foundations and in 1929 a second set of tracks was added. Regular passenger train service stopped using the bridge in 1970. I rode the 611 steam train over the bridge in the 80s and in the early 90s. Those trips went round trip from Cincinnati to Danville, Kentucky. I also rode the 630 steam train over the bridge from Lexington to Oneida, Tennessee and back. That was in 2014. There was also a boxcar round trip in the 90s. Lol. I first visited High Bridge in the early 80s when I was in college.
This video shows some awesome trains going over the bridge. We see trains going in both directions and filmed from 3 different locations. A boy and girl went out on the bridge to take pictures of themselves. Luckily no trains went by when they were up there but we saw trains pass over the bridge before and after they were up there. I also saw two girls go on the bridge and there are two very well worn paths that lead to the bridge. Every time that I go there I see people on the bridge.
This is the best time to visit because the leaves and brush are not blocking the view. In the summer it is very difficult to film. We also see the pavilion and the caboose that is on display. The caboose is in Southern Railroad paint. However, it was a Chessie System caboose that came from Morehead, Kentucky where I went to college. When I was in college there was a caboose sitting nearby in Clearfield, Kentucky and I believe that this is the same caboose. There was also a steam locomotive stored in an engine house in Clearfield. It was a Morehead & North Fork Railroad locomotive. I remember going into the engine house in 1979 and being shocked to find it. In 1981 the M&NF was briefly restored and used diesels until the lumber company burnt. I rode in a locomotive one time when it was picking up boxcars to take to the Chessie System in Morehead. Very little remains of either railroad. Today, the steam engine is in Ohio at The Age Of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek Ohio and has been restored to operation.
High Bridge Park is a great place to visit with plenty of parking and a great view of the bridge.
