Norfolk Southern Trains & Amtrak On The Hill. This Is Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania on the Pittsburgh Line. Long trains go almost all the way around you. Manned helper locomotives are used to get trains up the hill and are cut off at Altoona, Pennsylvania. There is also a funicular here but it is currently out of service. It is used to take people from the base of the hill to the top to watch the trains pass around the curve. Right now you have to walk the 194 steps to the top. Railfans come from all around the world to watch trains go around Horseshoe Curve. The main radio frequency changed to 160.875 from the old Conrail frequency.
This video features 6 trains on the hill including a light engine move and an Amtrak passenger train. The Amtrak train was running westbound after just leaving Altoona. Amtrak runs east in the morning and west in the evening. I stopped here on my way home from Strasburg. It had been a few years since I was here last and I discovered that NS changed the main road frequency since I was here last.
Filmed Saturday, June 24, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

I was going to be in that area a few years ago and was looking at Google Maps for things to do and saw Horseshoe Curve. So glad I took the time to stop there. Great place for train watching. pretty cool to think that i've been on an amtrak train going round that curve back when I was a Freshman in HS. it was an interesting experience seeing the end and beginning of the train. Thanks for you Videos JT, the whole Altoona area has many great train viewing spots. Friends of mine, we go there 2 times a yr. Yes "helpers" are what they're called because they are manned. Not only for climbing up from Altoona but to keep trains slowed down coming down. If you look down the valley towards the Reservoirs Altoona is down near the bottom of those. It's quite a hard pull up to there. An over looked place is Downtown Altoona where there's an enclosed bridge over the tracks is a great spot. Especially in Evening there are lights so you can see trains coming down from the Curve as well as ones going up. It ,however closes at 8:00PM sharp. There's another open one that doesn't close.

I love the SD70ACUs, and I can never hear too many K5HL's. The last time we were there, there was an EB with 28 cars with JD tractors. As for the manned helpers, I thought they provide dynamic braking, but it was explained to me by a moderator on the HSC chat that they push the trains downhill, and the leading engines do the braking to keep the slack out of the couplers.

I ride through the 'Curve once a year on Amtrak on the way to Pittsburgh. When you're actually _on_ the train it's mind-boggling the first time you realize how far up your train has to climb from one side of the valley to the other. As you're exiting the curve and are seated near the rear of the train, you can see the locomotive pulling you _and_ the very obvious-looking uphill that it's climbing, knowing how difficult it is for trains to climb hills. Imagine what it must look like to a _freight train_ engineer.

I was just looking at that area on Google Maps. There is some great train activity in that area. I saw a bridge with a sidewalk over the railroad tracks just south of the big railroad yard. Maybe someday I could get there
