The British Locos ABANDONED on a SCRAP Line in France

A sad sight to see these Class 58 'Bones' abandoned in Alizay facing a near certain end with the scrapers torch in France.
These 1980's built British Locos were often seen on coal services in the 1980's and 1990's before being relocated out to France to help with engineering services for TGV line builds via ETF and TSO around 2009.
In recent times, they've been left in Alizay to face an uncertain future.
This was a great visit to see these locos after so many years - Albeit sad to see them in their current condition.
Hopefully this video brings back a few memories of the distinctive shape of these British manufactured locos if you saw them of the UK mainlines back in the 80's and 90's.
Hope you enjoy the video - Thanks for watching.

Never say never, the class 69 project has been so far looking a sucess and these could end up the same or similar if the need for traction is still high when considering the price of new build locomotives.
@HyperBlueWolf
@HyperBlueWolf Жыл бұрын
Never going to happen. The Class 69 only exists because GBRf was banned from buying new class 66 locomotives because of new UK regulations. They used class 56 locos to save money not having to licence and test a new locomotive design. All UK diesel locomotives are being banned in 2040, and nobody is going to spend money restoring class 58s that will only last 17 years

@@HyperBlueWolf banning all diesels in 2040, will not happen. lack of electric locos, the catenary and the powerplants needed to support it are not there, so the banning of diesels is a dream.

The 58s used to come to Liverpool on MGRs to Garston Docks. On the return there was a machine in Speke Yard which used to close the the bottom doors on the hoppers.

I remember those days well David. They were Coalville Drivers used to work them as far as Garston Yard and Garston Drivers then took them down to Garston Docks. The Machine that you refer to, we used to call the Door slammer or The Dalek because of the two arms on the side and was operated by the C&W lads. Up until about a year ago, it was still there, in a state of disrepair, along with it`s associated Creep Signal for controlling the move but I don`t know if it is still there now because they have done a lot of work around there and I have not been there for a while. I was based there when we had that coal traffic. Happy Days.

Someone suggested dropping an EMD prime mover and alternator into them. Given the British.loading guage and the height of a 645 or 710 diesel engine this may be more complicated than it sounds. The EMD's are designed for a much taller locomotive and probably sit in a well in the frame in Britain. Ironic that there's an EMD of some sort running in the background.

I guess this is a real Bone yard? It amazing that the 56 and 58 were available at the same time frame. Both had similar specification as energy crisis freight locos but one the 56 having the V16 Ruston paxman 3250 bhp unit the 58 having Ruston paxman 12 cylinder 3300 bhp almost identical performance, on paper? However the 58s never gave as good as their cousins and only 50 made compaired to 135 56s, but its real shame when you see lines of redundant loccos like this! Surely these would be ideal for engine conversions to the EMD 710 like the new 69s? Maybe class 75? Although they look well gone in condition? At least we could preserve one for the future to re live how bad a class of locomotive they were!

My favourite class of all time many of years ago I love Just to go to Leicester Station to see the 58s hauling MGR'S Castle cement wagons and more rolling stock round the Midlands I even went to rugley one time Just to the run round before it went into the power station or come Just for the chance of a driver to say want to look in the cab. Just such a shame maybe GBRF might snap up a few and give them a over haul or a heritage company or maybe the class 58 group would take some on. Get them back in the UK and see if Doncaster works would work on them or even toton but still got to be called class 58s King of the coal shifters till the the 60 was introduced which is my 2nd favourite class

Why?, Your still alive aren’t you?, the planets still here and working, those 58’s are useful, comments like yours are not.

@@stevenmoran4060 But their fate isn't determined so you cannot say they had a better carbon footprint!! They could be reused or most likely scrapped. Then how would you calculate the carbon footprint of recycling all that steel and other metals against the years of use if they had remained in traffic! All a bit pointless really!

@@paulnolan1352 What the hell are you on about? Initially i meant the question as they had hauled millions of tons of coal across the UK. How the hell is my comment not usefull. Are you bullying me for asking questions mr Nolan? I couldnt care less about the climate LIE. Im here because i like trains. YOUR COMMENT IS USELESS Mr Dolan.

Discusting brin them back to use. Or WE can scrap these. Think the good ols English Electric my first company, well built work horses. Thay could be sent to Ukrain as Russia is destroying the power station to stop ra transport as it's nearly all electric. They are built like all EE were like brick shit houses and would most likely survived a blast.

The Ukranian railways run on 'Soviet' 5 feet track gauge.. Oh & by the way have you seen the long lines of Class 60s rusting away at Toton yard?!!

Why don't we suggest that they are refurbished in UK and sent to Ukraine for their new Std gauge tracks that they are building? The new Std gauge will need freight locomotives. Slava Ukraini

BR was standardizing locos, these,the westerns and others found work elsewhere. 58's worked on building the TGV and in Spain too.

So, what is the point being made here? Are the French simply buying British locomotives for their scrap value? Are the British pulling some kind of underhand deal? What is the reason for this most uninteresting video? My cup of tea got cold as I tried to work out just why I was wasting my time. But I stayed with it right through. No commentary. The sounds of running locos in the background, but that was obviously dubbed. This was worse than watching paint dry!
