Bluebell Railway - 'Giants of Steam' Gala 09/10/2021

After a year away, the Bluebell Railway's annual 'Giants of Steam' Gala is back with a bang, showcasing a variety of southern region locomotives at work in the Sussex countryside. The event featured an intense timetable, which saw all four of the operating locomotives complete three return trips over the course of the day
35028 "Clan Line", visiting courtesy of the Merchant Navy Locomotive Preservation Society, proved to be the star of the show, making only its second appearance at a heritage railway gala in its preservation career. The Merchant appeared reunited with its red nameplates after a period adorned with a black pair. Joining 35028, 30925 "Cheltenham" would complete the visiting duo. Representing the home fleet, Maunsell veteran S15 - 847 would be shouldered by 5MT - 73082; the latter returning fresh from an overhaul for the gala. In addition, H Class - 263 would spend the day based around Horsted Keynes, providing shunting demonstrations.
Locomotives:
BR(S) Rebuilt 'Merchant Navy' Class - 35028 "Clan Line"
SR S15 Class - 847
SE&CR H Class - 263
Ex-SR V 'Schools' Class - 30925 "Cheltenham"
BR Standard Class 5MT - 73082 "Camelot"
Having failed before the event, visiting USATC S160 Class - 6046 would also be on display at Sheffield Park throughout the weekend.
All footage filmed on Saturday the 9th of October 2021.

A lovely moody opening shot and some superb filming. Most enjoyable. I could only hear the locos but not see them. I was working across the road at Sheffield Park and garden. Thanks for the memories.

I was born and grew up in the UK. I'm old now, and I doubt I shall travel to the UK again, but well shot video like this almost makes me feel as though I am visiting. Thank you.

To see a Bulleid loco pulling a rake of Bulleid coaches behind the tender is site for sore eyes, the matching profile of coach and tender couldn't be better. This was an easy day out for Clan Line. The Schools pulling a rake of Southern green coaches also takes me back to the early 60's, though the cleanliness of Cheltenham is something you didn't see in the 60's! Great video.

Some great footage! I had a great day there! Cheltenham is one of my favourite locos, plus the chance to ride behind Clan Line! It was epic! Equally I’d not seen either of their home fleet which were operating the service trains. Whilst I had seen and been behind the H Class before - it’s a beautiful loco so I was pleased to see it out again 🙂

Thanks for recording and presenting this wonderful event in your unique style. The weather seems to have blessed this event, when other recent weekends have been drenched with downpours. As the seasons shift the crisp sound, crystal clear images and your careful framing will be revisited during the coming dark, dank dreary downtime. Beautiful quality of footage and sound! I didn’t know there was so much old coaching stock, it seems to be breeding! Always loved the Schools Class because I built the Meccano No. 10 set model 35 years ago. It’s so nice I never took it apart. Even though it’s a huge model, it hardly effected the stock of parts in the set! 🤣

I must say, that tender-first panned shot of Clan Line is excellent. The light really shows it off well. And of course those against the light shots at the beginning and7:45; that latter one could be somewhere between Salisbury & Exeter

Very nice-only drawback is that it made me wish i was there. Great to see some classic Southern locos operating in a beautiful and very English [if you know what i mean!] kind of setting.

Should that not read "Southern Giants of Steam"?!!!! Some cracking shots of 35028 (apart from the going backwards one!!!!) and always good to see and hear a Schools . You had better weather this weekend, was that a heat haze on those track panels?!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Haha, very true! Thanks very much! Clan Line really does loan herself well for video, even if I did do her a disservice by showing her in reverse. Believe it or not, that was a heat haze - probably the last one of the year.

Brill entertainment lived near bye and sharpthone tunnel brought back lovely memories: before the trains were opened up stags would hang around there getting the air con so to speak blow out from the tunnel ; how do s the driver see what’s coming if the train s wrong way around thanks more whistles loved it greetings h k
