True story that happened to me last weekend: So my best friend from elementary school has a trans brother who works at Starbucks and has basically known me my whole life. Flash forward some years (now) and I'm in that Starbucks and I see him. When he asks for my name I tell him my chosen name (Max) rather than my birth name (Ava) and he smiles at me. I knew he recognized me right away so I was scared he'd call me out but he didn't. Instead he gave me my drink and said "Have a good day sir" as I left. I looked next to my name on my cup and it said "I'm so proud of you". Shit like this warms my heart 💛

4:31 I'm a Cisgender woman, but the whole choosing a name aspect of this video really resonated with me. I used to get severely bullied about my birth name and who I was as a kid because it was a very complicated German name. While I love my hertiage and respect my parents on giving me that name, After an amount of time I started strongly unassociating with that name and identity. I decided I needed something new to fit who I am as an adult. Going through that whole transition of switching legal names was really tough. People would ask me why I would go to the effort, why it triggered me, that it's just a name, all these remarks and questions and all I could ever say in return was; you never really know how much power a name has over an identity until you actually experience it. While I'm not trans and I don't get that that side of the identity part, I do know how stressful it can be having your birth name called out in various situations and just feeling really anxious and uncomfortable about it but not be able to explain why. Now that my name has been finalised I can tell you I don't regret it one bit and it feels incredibly liberating having a name that I chose for myself that really captured me as a person. Just thought I'd share my anecdote for those who might be in a similar situation
@Duskkit3 жыл бұрын
I'm genderfluid and while my birth name didn't feel actively wrong, I've switched to a less firmly feminine one recently. And I didn't realize until after the switch just how much stress I had been under because of people mispronouncing my name and nickname. When I was using the old name, I thought I was fine; it was actually somewhat cool that I could tell when a new teacher was about to read my name off the roll sheet by the expression on their face or the way they trailed off after the first syllable. But the everyday mispronunciations, to the point where for a few years in elementary school even I struggled to consistently use the correct pronunciation because I'd heard the wrong one so many times it drove the correct one out of my brain... That was a weight I'd carried so long I didn't even remember it was there anymore, and now that I don't have to carry it, I have more energy to deal with other problems.

I’m a cis woman and I really hate my first name as well. I wasn’t bullied for it but nobody ever spells it right (it’s different than my username here lol) and I really just don’t identify with it very well. Sometimes I don’t even realize someone is talking to me when they call out my name unless they pair my last name with it too. I’m not an adult yet but I’m really nervous to tell people to use a name I feel more comfortable with so I just use it on sites like twitter and Tik Tok where nobody irl knows me lol maybe I’ll be comfortable enough to change it like you did too that gives me a bit of hope that people may actually use it if I ask them

@@kathybramley5609 Yeah, allergies yellow and red dye can sometimes cause hyperactivity. Luckily it's a pretty short-lived reaction, like most allergies. I knew a guy who was allergic to yellow dye and as a teen he snuck yellow monster drink into his house (his mom wouldn't let him have it obviously) and downed a bunch of them and was so hyper he could barely function. I feel conflicted because that would be very sweet, but gillette is literally solely responsible for the fact that women have to shave their legs in the first place.
@JacquelineUnderwood4 жыл бұрын
Shawn Wales “women’s” razors are actually typically a bit different, the blades tend to be at a gentler angle, they tend to be more ergonomic for shaving legs vs your face, and the handles tend to be made for a better grip. There’s definitely still a pink tax added, and they shouldn’t be as expensive as they are, but they do take a little bit more expense to make. Tbh I think they should just advertise them as generic razors and legs/bits razors. No need to gender them.

For the Starbucks advert, I was initially confused by your reaction - I thought, okay, we're gonna see a m2f transition.... I heard "Trevor" untill the name badge showed "Gemma". Not sure if it's just not hearing properly, or seeing someone presenting as male my brain assumed it must be a typically male name.... Anyone else have the same experience? But I think James suits him way better than Trevor anyway. And his smile at the end was incredible. The Gillette advert also made me laugh, because even as a cis girl, I had the (apparently uncommon) experience of my dad teaching me how to shave at 13 (legs - because I started using his razor - my mum doesn't shave) and it is a lovely bonding experience.

People at my job intentionally, call me by my "dead name" even though it is a diverse place. These same people still called me. The wrong pronouns as well. Intentionally. There are times where, I just take a step back and I just give them a certain look. And they know what that look is. Some of them will correct themselves. Others have ignorant and act like what they said. Doesn't bother me. So these commercials Got to me. I understand. That the company needs my "birth name" To write out my checks, unfortunately. Because I haven't. Gotten around to changing my name yet. But the fact Still Remains that I haven't been going by my "birth name" In well over 15 years.

@@briannad9409 I would point out that, depending on where the OP lives/works, they might not be able to file for discrimination. The amount of workplaces and countries that still don't have anti discrimination policy in place to protect trans and gender-diverse people is truly disgusting. Regardless of law though, I totally agree that no one deserves to have to deal with discrimination based on their gender.

My parents aren't accepting, but my older sister helped me figure out how to shave, even though I'm pre-T. It honestly felt amazing, just getting rid of that tiny bit of peach fuzz! And I'm much less stressed about that part of transitioning now that I know I'll be ready for when my facial hair starts coming in. 4:27 I am Cis, and I get shivers every time I watch this Starbucks ad, I love it. (Hate big capitalist chains, but the ad is amazing). On the other hand, the first time I watched it was on a trans activist's FB wall, who was saying how they really didn't' appreciate it (like, "we deserve way more than to have our name recognized, that's the bare minimum of common decency and is not something trans people should be grateful for. It should just be common sense"). Which is a position I totally respect as well. So I see both sides, I guess.
