Sold! Sounds right up my Strasse. To your point about needing to look up facts in fiction, I always wondered about David Markson's factlet that Jean Genet was a Nazi collaborator (from jail). My research tells me he wasn't, though when reborn into his postwar literary life he demonstrated a pro-Nazi aesthetic and it begs the question of whether that brings the entire Markson edifice down, or represents just one more layer of embellishment of fiction through fact.

Wow! I’m Iranian but never had heard this author’s name. Thank you. I think most translations are the interpretation of the translator. I don’t think that there’s a way to escape that.

You're welcome! Yeah, there's no way around interpretation being intertwined in translation.

I'm going to add trans(re)lating house to my reading list. Thank you for reviewing and giving it attention.

Sometimes I wish one of these wildcard recommendations were something ghastly. I'd be interested in watching a video about a book you absolutely hated. But then I think there is enough negativity in the world already, and plenty of lesser-known books that deserve attention. So may the fates of reading keep you in their good graces.

I totally get the spirit of this! Just curious: if you could recommend such a ghastly book for me, what would it be?

@@LeafbyLeaf Great question. It reaffirms the idea that I don't have the vocation of a critic. When a book is bad, I stop reading. Most of the terrible books I've read from beginning to end are because I'm proofreading them (and not getting paid enough to do so). I'm pretty sure none of them are translated, though. On the other hand, I don't mind that there are so many bad books that sell well. This has always been the case and they can co-exist with real literary works of art. The moment I start to feel aggravated is when garbage begins to usurp the place of real artistic efforts. This is especially bad in Colombia now, a country with an important (albeit mostly untranslated) literary tradition. Some of the worst things I've glanced over that try to pass off as literature have come from Isabel Allende, Paulo Coelho, Haruki Murakami, Mario Mendoza, Ricardo Silva Romero... I just remembered a terrible book: Women, by Charles Bukowski. I'm not a Bukowski hater, I like several of his poems very much. But Women is awful. I also asked my girlfriend, who is infinitely more patient than I am. Her proposal is Dead Until Dark, by Charlaine Harris, and anything by Colleen Hoover. I knew I wouldn't be able to keep this short.

Would love your thoughts on my poetry. Self introspection in minor. Love the video. Going to order this title right after I finish the second viewing.

“Dealing out the agony within Charging hard and no one's gonna give in Living on your knees, conformity Or dying on your feet for honesty Inbred, our bodies work as one Bloody, but never cry submission Following our instinct not a trend Go against the grain until the end Slamming through, don't f**k with razorback Stepping out, you'll feel our hell on your back Blood follows blood and we make sure Life ain't for you and we're the cure Honesty is my only excuse Try to rob us of it, but it's no use Steamroller action crushing all Victim is your name and you shall fall Damage jackals ripping right through you Sight and smell of this, it gets me goin' Know just how to get just what we want Tear it from your soul in nightly hunt F**k it all and f**king no regrets Never happy ending on these dark sets All's fair for Damage Inc. you see Step a little closer if you please Blood will follow blood Dying time is here” -James Hetfield
