Hi, this railway journey is one of the most scenic I have ever done and Lake Bled, along with New Zealand's Milford Sound are the two most beautiful places in the world. The Postojna caves are amazing, I visited them before Yugoslavia broke up, when I was driving away, a man stopped me and asked "do you want to see my caves"? The kids were keen to see more caves, so I asked how much, he gave me a very high price in Yugoslavian Dinar, I said "too much", he then said £10, so I agreed. The caves were fantastic, we stood in a place where the cave finished high up on the side of a canyon with a magnificent waterfall emerging from the cave we were standing in. Later as the sun was setting I pulled into a car park near the place where the boats set off for the Island in the middle of Lake Bled, a man came from nowhere and said "You want to ride my cable car" as the last experience had been a good one, we agreed a price in English currency. The cable car was a big modern one capable of carrying at least 50 people, we were the only passengers and it was quite dark in the valley, the cable car emerged in bright sunlight in what looked like a ski area, he waited for us to have a look around before we set of back down into the darkness of the valley. We were staying on the coast at Rovinj, were we hired a car to explore the area as far inland as Ljubljana, we also caught a train called the "Green Train" to Ljubljana from Pula via Trieste, it was a very scenic ride. Happy Days.

@@Timsvideochannel1 Initially I wanted to say that this journey is up there with the Bergen line in Norway and the Bernina line in Switzerland but I didn't want to come across as that pompous. But I am glad you said it, so now I know it's not just me feeling that way. Thank you Tim. I still get excited about these ex Yugoslavian states even though now they are separate entities. Can't help feeling we should be together still. 😔 As for Bled, it has that fairytale ambience and in winter especially it looks like Sleeping Beauty's castle, where she waits to be waken by the kiss of true love. As for Milford Sound in New Zealand, I am pretty sure you have it hiding somewhere in your YT channel. 🤗 And the Postojna cave was magic. Something out of the Lord of the Rings movie. As I said, it brings back lovely memories. 🥰

It's nice we agree on the railroad trip, it is up there with the best and to top it all you can still catch the museum train throughout the summer months. I love to visit Scotland where scheduled steam train runs along the Mallaig line, although I've seen it, I've yet to ride the train, it's on my "to do" list.

Thank you for your wonderful videos I can never travel to These's Over Sea's place's I am unable to travel any more. I think the Horn's are fine I in joyed this one.

I'm working on part 2 now, the scenery, bridges, tunnels and viaducts are amazing. This railway is a real testament to the skills of the engineers and navvies who surveyed and built the line. Part 2 should out in a week or so.

Age is creeping up on me now, so I want to make the most of being able to travel whilst I can. Hey, your Yugoslavian adventure must have been a blast, you certainly came away with some interesting experiences. I visited Yugoslavia on a package holiday to Rovinj with Yugotours at the time Margret Thatcher was replaced and talk of the upcoming war was in the air. I went to the caves on a coach tour, I returned the following week in a hire car, the car park was empty and a man approached and said "you wanna see my caves" I asked how much, the price he gave in Yugoslavian Dina was way more than I was prepared to pay, he looked at me then said "OK ten English pounds" I accepted his offer for me, my wife and two children to visit his caves. We were a bit apprehensive at first, but it quickly became apparent that these were as spectacular as the Postojna caves, just not commercialized. The highlight was where the caves broke out into daylight high up on the side of a deep ravine with the stream we had been following cascading out in a picture perfect water fall. I was so grateful to our guide I doubled the amount we'd agreed to pay. We drove off toward Lake Bled to be greeted by one of the most awesome sights I've ever seen, the castle in the lake surrounded by stunning Autumn colours. I drove to a car park on the far side of the lake and up popped a man who said "you wanna ride my cable car", sure enough just behind him was a large modern cable car capable of holding upwards of sixty people, we agreed a price and I jokingly said and how much to come down again, he just smiled and said "I'll wait for you". It was getting dark by the lakeside, but when we reached what I assume where ski slopes at the top it was still bright daylight. What an amazing day, hiring a car for the second week of our holiday allowed us to see the places tourists often miss, although traffic lights that didn't always work was a new experience, we were just advised to treat them as roundabouts. I did fit a train in, Pula to Ljubljana, probably one of the most scenic train rides I've ever done, I must do it again and soon. This rail-tour of the former Yugoslavia bought back some wonderful memories, it really was as beautiful as I remembered.

Tim, not only did you trump my fading memories, but you went when there was some tourism available. I don’t remember when Yugotours started, but it wasn’t ‘there’ in late sixties (nor in my memory). I am sure ‘my’ trip was on the cusp of the opening up of tourism, in the latter days (after Tito) of the communist unified state. Seeing it as an outsider, perhaps sailing close to the wind on being tracked by big brother, noting the amount of Ox carts in the early morning traffic, was at a turning point before the fragmentation of the state. It was and is a beautiful area, pristine clear seas and deep history, not just underground caves. Didn’t need commercialisation; just appreciation. Just recalled the guides in cave system were in several language groups. The only other English tourist speakers were a couple from Bolivia, who had better English than German. ‘Our’ guides had a learned by heart script and when one in our party asked awkward questions the guides seemed to rewind their speech a couple of sentences. Hilarious but we got nothing other than approved speech... ! P

@@Pjs75 Hi, remembering things by events is OK, but not when the year matters, so I looked a few things up. The first time I booked to go to Yugoslavia was 1980, the same year as Tito died, the travel agent advised us to go to Italy instead, so we went to Sorrento that year. We went to Rovinj in 1990 and according to Google the war started in 1992 and finished in 1995, it is still fresh in the minds of many, whilst Slovenia and Croatia are not a problem, it is best not to mention it in Montenegro and Serbia, our tour guide said if anyone asks, tell them you are from Sweden. Although the war is over, it is too soon for it to be forgotten, the scars run deep. It is only when you visit places and the tour guide puts everything into context, you realize how unpleasant the conflict was, sometimes family members found themselves on opposite sides. I hope nothing ever happens like it again. The museum of the war in Sarajevo is a bit of an eye opener, it remembers what happened, but concentrates on a the future in a positive manner, I didn't expect a war museum to be so uplifting. You were in the country at a fascinating time, just before all the changes took place and the narrow gauge rail network was still in place. Yugotours were new to High-street travel agents in 1990. History is created in the blink of an eye, where did all those years go?

Hi, 41 years up front, you must have some wonderful memories and seen a few changes. On this trip I clamped a small GoPro camera to one of the handrails on the tender, the loco crew were very friendly and helpful. I traveled with them in the cab for a while, some of the long tunnels made life in the cab a memorable experience, I was covered in coal dust at the end of day, but the smile some of my travelling companions caught on film as I climbed down from the cab showed just how much I had enjoyed the day. Even in these days when Health and safety regulations make it harder to place a camera in the cab, there are still many train crew around the world who will help when asked politely, or if I don't speak their language, I approach them in a similar manner to yourself and show them the small camera, it works most of the time.

Been retired since 2007 and things sure have changed from stricter rules to cameras the cab of the locos. Not only pointing forward but also at the driver. It's not the safe fun we had years ago. I'm starting to go through some of my videos and posting on my channel. In 2008 I shot a steam loco in Poznan, Poland as it was leaving the station. So much more to say but not here. ;-)

Hi, life is more difficult for the driver today, I live in the UK and it is almost impossible to get a camera in the cab now, which is a shame, because the view from the London Overground on a sunny day is one of the best city views to be had anywhere. Countries where tourists are important to the livelihood of the railways take a different view, they know You Tube videos can provide effective free advertising and if they are approached in a polite manner can be very helpful. I've taken a look at your channel and subscribed so that I can catch some your videos as you upload them :-)

OS upgrades are a real pain, you're lucky you don't have to content with Windows 10, it's a bit of a nightmare.

The train is referred to as the museum train, it one of the only regular timetabled steam trains on the main-line. Hi, are you enjoying a heatwave in Somerset? the beaches have been busy here in Sussex. This was an outstanding trip made on a scheduled train on the main line, although it is really a tourist train. No visit to Slovenia would be complete without riding this train and visiting Bled castle. I use a GoPro camera mounted in or on the front of the train. If you take a look at their website you will see the array of mounts available. There a a number of action type cameras available these days, they do a good job as long as there is not too much vibration. The results from mounting them on steam or diesel trains can be a bit unreliable, whereas an electric train will nearly always give a good result.

For a few days or so! The beaches were crowded here too. Just see my recent video on the Weston Land Trains, when you have the time! It amazes me how you track down such interseting trains all over the world and manage to get to travel on them. We are fortunate that you take such good videos!

Judging the best place to fit it gets better with experience I expect. It would be awful to find your camera missing at the end of a run!

Hi, it's nice to know the British still enjoy a day at the seaside. I'm glad you enjoy watching some of the lines I have been fortunate enough to visit. Today I took a more local trip out to the Bluebell Railway to see some of the layouts at their model railway weekend. I am fortunate to have a number of really good heritage lines within a couple of hours drive.

I visited Bled too in the 80's, I found the railway, but never saw any trains, but I did catch a train from near Rovinj to Ljubljana on the Green Train, don't know if it is still possible today, I do remember it being a very scenic route.

I don't get time to sit down, but I don't mind because I get a lot of enjoyment from filming my trips. The train crew were very helpful, I intend to return in winter to see this beautiful part of the world covered in snow, I've seen postcards, it looks wonderful.

Hi, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I skip the tunnels because there is no headlight on the locomotive, it's just very dark, with nothing to see, some of the tunnels are long. When I'm travelling on a train with good headlights I tend to leave the tunnels in, also every time GoPro update their cameras they get a bit better at filming in low light situations.

By this I got list of steam locos German class 52 and confirmation by Wikipedi these locos are classified as JZ 33 at Yugoslavia. www.pospichal.net/lokstatistik/20033-jdz33.htm en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DRB_Class_52 Although these locomotives are simple and robust, without the care of the railway staff they would not have so far survived. Therefore, a big commendation to the railroad staff of all these countries.

As we progressed through the former Yugoslavia we came across more of these Class 33 locomotives working in coal mines. I rode in the cab of a number of them, although they all looked similar from the outside, I noticed a number of differences in the cab. We also visited some of the maintenance depots where the locos were looked after.

The schedule was not very taxing, but the gradients demanded a powerful engine. The gentle progress left plenty of time to enjoy the scenery, but there were moments when the engine showed it was capable of a good turn of speed. The experience reminded me of the Pines Express being hauled by a 9F over the switchback route to Bournemouth in the 60's.

I have to concede, that is an impressive whistle. You might like the sound of the whistle on this locomotive in Bulgaria (one of my videos) - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j9iidJRnrbzPqIU.html - However you look at it, all steam engine whistles are exciting, because they announce the arrival/departure of a live steam locomotive.

That Bulgarian loco's whistle looks and sounds like a Nathan 5 chime, looks like Bulgarian Railways has a big graffiti problem like here, only here the carriage set is taken out of service and cleaned as soon as possible to try and deter the "Artists"

I personally like the Bulgarian whistle, it sounds a warning of something big approaching in a far more dignified manner than a shrill whistle ever can. Graffiti is a big problem in many European countries. Some railways even apply their own graffiti, at least that way they get to choose what it says. The run into Gare de Nord (France) is the worst I have seen, about 20 km of continuous graffiti, the lines are electrified, fast and busy, but that doesn't deter the artists from risking their lives to tag every spare inch on concrete.

They have been caught on security cameras spraying graffiti on trains while stopped in the station here, about six of them run onto the platform wearing hoodies, faces covered spray one carriage then run off in the middle of the day with passengers sitting on the train. They picked the wrong train to paint one day (a steam special) while it was stopped in a siding waiting for a signal one passenger went to the kiosk in the next car got a jug of boiling water and tipped it over them from an open window.

I was inspired to start this channel by a guy I met in New Zealand, who introduced me to his channel. I enjoyed watching his videos and decided to give it a go myself.
