What camping gear is ideal for the TransAmerica Trail? Well, there are many ways to skin this cat, and there's not one absolute answer. In this video, I discuss the camping equipment I used on two different TAT trips (and on other trips, as well). I share what worked well, what didn't work well, and why. Hopefully, it helps others in their TAT planning!
My apologies for the poor audio in this video. My primary audio file was corrupted, so I had to use the secondary audio file from the camera’s built-in microphone.

* I purchased all of the gear in this video at market prices (no sponsorships). Below are affiliate links to most of the gear I discuss in this video, in order. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases, and I appreciate your support of this channel!

I am so glad to see someone use that sleeping bag liner. I purchased one last year when living in a van in Colorado. The evenings were in the teens and that liner kept me sooo toasty warm.

Skip the coffee and suck it up and drink tea. Maybe some pre work out powder to jumpstart your day. I'd drop the clothespins and use knots. A few bags of spaghetti or ramen noodles. Extra socks, burn them as you go. A good fire starter is dryer lint, you don't need a lot and it compresses well. The wet wipes are a really good idea. I liked that. I need my mouth to feel clean. Listerine tabs. And a finger toothbrush. A small amount of baking soda goes a long way for brushing your teeth. I agree with the sleeping bag and tent. I have more room, I'm a Jeep guy but less is good. But I have the luxury to bring a chainsaw and my rig has a air compressor. And I can bring tarps.

I'm surprised that you don't take a good quality knife, either belt or folder. In my opinion, an essential bit of kit, especially if you don't take an hatchet.

I carry a box cutter and a Gerber multi-tool. I guess I mentally categorize those as tools rather than camping gear, but they could also be considered camping gear. But yes, some sort of knife is very handy!

Do you carry extra gas for your bike?

No extra gas for my KTM 890 Adventure, but if I was riding a smaller dual sport with a small tank, then I would.

Great video. I would have liked to see it all packed up as well. What size panniers are using? And do you use a top bag as well? - Frank

Excellent point-I should have included a photo of my bike with everything packed up. If you watch my “TransAmerica Trail-Colorado to Oregon” video, you will see a few fleeting video shots and stills of my bike fully packed with this same gear (plus clothing, etc). I used the Tusk Aluminum Panniers (size medium, 27L per side) and a Nanuk 918 case (similar to a Pelican case) on top.

How difficult was it to pack your gear in the aluminum panniers ? Also, would you add or eliminate some things from you travel gear? Stay safe Sir!
@MotoTherapy
@MotoTherapy 2 жыл бұрын
I believe the aluminum boxes are easier to pack, and the contents are easier to access, than with soft luggage. Other than what I mentioned in the video, I can't think of what I'd change. Of course, this video only covers camping gear...it does not cover the other gear I carry like tools and electronics.

I heard hammocks are faster to set up and pack up. If I took a tent and the other guy is in a hammock would he be waiting hours for me in the morning?
@MotoTherapy
@MotoTherapy 2 жыл бұрын
That is a possibility, depending on the packing efficiency and caffeination of the respective individuals. But the hammock camper also runs the risk of having to sleep on the ground during a sandstorm when there are no trees available.
