Ep198. In this episode of Cruising Off Duty, we continue our Transatlantic sailing voyage on the 50' (Xquisite X5) Catamaran. We completed our sailing passage to St. Helena Island, and now it is time to explore the Island. There is so much to like about St. Helena.
It is clean, the people are friendly and It is well worth the effort to get there.

Saint Helena is one of the prettiest islands on the Earth to be found almost the middle of an ocean and having a truly heavenly landscape with stunning ridges ,slopes ,wonderful native trees and plants ! I would love to llive forever there and take daily walks through the blissful stillness of its so spellbindingly pretty natural setting !!!

Brought back many memories, all I can say is if you get the chance to go then grab it with both hands. Spent a week there in February/March 2020 just before pandemic hit. My daughter was there working so took the opportunity to visit. She got stranded due to borders being closed but did make it home later in the year. The people are so friendly and it’s a different way of living - everyone seems to know everyone else. There is a lot of history, walks etc to keep you occupied. Would certainly go back again if I get the chance.

I've watched many of your videos and feel compelled to finally comment. When you get done sailing you can go work for National Geographic doing travel segments! This one and Namibia are both professional quality. I showed them to the family as excellent travel documentaries. As much as I love the sailing and boat reviews, the point of cruising is to VISIT COOL PLACES and sometimes KZfaqrs forget that. So thank you for sharing a couple of incredible corners of the world with us!
@Bowmans-Woods

Thanks Mike. Glad you wrote in. I totally agree. I’m bored with watching sailing KZfaq channels videos of just sailing. Been there, done that. So I prefer the destination videos where they explore what’s on land. But, if you look at my view counts of the various videos, we are clearly in the minority. My sailing videos get more views. I am proud of the quality of this video and it took way longer to edit and make than the sailing vlog videos and I’m sure it will get 1/2 the views. So my return on time invested is much lower. Sadly, because I prefer to film and make the land excursion videos.

@Bowmans-Woods 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Fun times acting like Tarzan and I did love this island. Im sure I will be back. Only thing they could improve is spend some money for a dinghy dock. Then again I think this lack of a spot for dinghies keeps the local water taxi guys employed so maybe that is the reason for a lack of money and motivation for that? Just thought it was funny that they spent $millions on an airport to bring in tourists, that almost no one uses, but they can't find a few thousand dollars to allow people to come to shore easily from their boat? More people would stop at this jewel if they promoted it more to cruisers as an easy and cheap place to throw anchor and come visit the island. Thats the reason the Caribbean is so popular. Free anchorages and plenty of spots to come to shore and spend money on the local economies.

Thanks for the very interesting video of an island that many of have heard of but never imagined what it would look like! Quick Q - What were all those shipping containers doing along the sea wall? Protection? Also, how do customs and immigration, and the local constabulary treat you during you travels when they realize you are a police officer?
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 жыл бұрын
That wall we get on is also where there is a crane loading and unloading shipping containers. So I assume the are sitting there waiting to be shipped out. My passport doesn't say I am a police officer so unless they ask what I do, I don't say anything. Although if I am wearing the ball cap they may figure it out. ha ha. But surprisingly few people seem to notice the ballcap. I guess anyone could buy a police cap? So few ever ask so I don't get any special notice. :-)

How well protected is the bay from ocean swells and waves? It seems peaceful on a peaceful day. But how protected this bay is in bad weather? It looks opened to the ocean and yet, the only place for mooring!!!!
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 жыл бұрын
The prevailing winds come from the other side of the island so you are most times protected but you are right that if the winds switch from the opposing side it would be very bouncy in that mooring. Only option on this island though.

Love your drone footage but I'm not sure how you confirm it's legal to fly it in the different places you go but another travel channel I watch has been thrown in jail in Iran for illegally flying their drone and have been there now for 10 weeks in what is reputed to be a very rough prison.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 жыл бұрын
Well as long as you fly high enough not to bother anyone then no one knows or cares. You need to use common sense. Flying in a place that is paranoid of drones and is not known for open mindedness or personal liberties and not afraid to throw your butt in jail, like Iran, is just stupid. I wouldn’t fly there.

A lot of the local people work away on contract throughout the year and come back over December. Also the building of the airport created many jobs during the construction, this also allowed many locals to purchase(import) their own cars, apparently there are as many cars as residents on the island.

Love this video. PS When the Atlantic swells roll in unimpeded by any obstacle, they can easily reach and exceed the height of the dock. No wooden dingy dock or quay of any kind is going to help or shelter you, thats why they have the rope to swing on and off the boat :( Presumably those impressive volcanic cliffs are as steep underwater as they are above them, so thats going to be quite the engineering challenge to make a nice mediterranean style harbour and the British Govt is unlikely to ever release those kinds of funds.
@Bowmans-Woods
@Bowmans-Woods 4 жыл бұрын
As you can see from the wreck shown in the drone footage, the bay near the entrance is not that deep. They could easily build a breakwater by dumping rocks to make a wall to shelter the area and build a Dinghy dock. It would help with tourism and I’m sure the locals would prefer not to have to depend on a water taxi to get to and from their boats. Only island of this size that I’ve ever heard of where there is absolutely no way to bring your Dinghy to shore. The Taxi often stops at 6pm so how are you supposed to patronize the bars and restaurants if you can’t get back to your boat after 6pm? They need to invest a little money to improve their local economy. The airport cost millions for 1 flight a week.
