Designed by Luigi Pellarini, Transavia built these in Western Sydney during the '70's and '80's. One looks great in Mad Max 3: Beyond the thunderdome. Looks odd, but flies well. This was filmed at the Bicentennial Airshow in 1988 at Richmond RAAF Base, New South Wales.

I became fascinated with this airplane due to the Mad Max movie due to the loads it will carry . It is a tractor in the air capable of carrying a Ford Pinto car or 6 passengers if I remember correctly. Thanks for posting this video!

I'm glad that when Luigi designed this plane, he would never have thought that it would continue to garner such a mix of feelings over 50 years down the line. For all of the opinions on airworthiness and fly-ability, it appears that many pilots quite liked it as it had good control harmony both full and empty. Check out the other video of Airtruk and Ceres at Tyabb. There are some comments there from pilots who worked with them. Also the PL11 Airtruck Documentary by another KZfaqr is worth a look.

It keeps the pilot and the cargo at the center of gravity. Thats what makes it a air truck. No change in pitch moment when loaded or unloaded. Also the pilot is at the CG point. That makes for a smoother ride and better feel of the airplane.

I know, no bloke wants to walk into the party with the ugly shiela, no matter how good a cook she is or can do a full compression test in five minutes and can beat everyone else in Trivial Pursuit and knows how to ease the deepest tension in a blokes body. He wants to walk in with the Miss Universe that everyone thinks is the best root that they'd ever meet, even though she's so inept she'd burn the water for a cuppa. And there's quite few planes like that, look ordinary, but make you feel like a real pilot, but no-one sees you arrive and taxi in. And some, so they tell me, the best part of the trip is going full lean on the hardstand in front of the hangar. From what I've read, when a pilot understood the Airtruk, it was a capable and well behaved plane but too many pilots treated them poorly and paid the price. Hope that you've seen my other video with the Ceres flying in an airshow at Tyabb? On the car bit, I've got a friend who's got a Morgan, not because it's a nice car to drive, but because it gets him noticed. Bright yellow.

@hodgejr I understand that the T400 (with the IO-720) was in certification in 1988, so you could be right. I'm surprised no one has picked up that this is actually a Skyfarmer and not actually an Airtruk (nose gear is the giveaway), but more people know the Airtruk. Maybe someone who worked with the machine is out there and can give us some more info.
@agman4360
@agman4360 14 жыл бұрын
@planesounds Hi guy's,yes this is powered by the IO-720 of 400hp,a development of the 300hp skyfarmer to increase capacity,there were 4 built with 3 going to china and there is still 1 operating with Steve death at hazzair in albury NSW very cool machine,the weight of the conversion outweighed the increase in capacity so hence the limited production,i understand that the 400hp skyfarmers in china are no longer flying and at least one was written off

Because the downwash on the tailplane of a conventional aircraft from dumping a ton of water (it carried a ton) causes it to pitch violently nose-up (essentially out of control). Pellarini shifted the twin tails out of the downwash, so the Airtruk did not do this. You can see it dumping a load of water at low level; notice that it did not upset the aircraft at all. I flew both the 300 HP version and the 400 HP version; they were fun to fly, but very noisy.

Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I find all aeroplanes attractive. Some more than others. At about the same time as your comment came in, I was talking with a chap who just out of the blue said that he'd like to take an Airtruk as his touring plane of choice. Carry any amount of luggage fly for hours and land almost anywhere. His present plane is an Airtourer so the Airtruk does have advantages over the Airtourer.
