Transcription of Keith Jarrett's Ritooria (Facing You 1972 ECM) by Mat Smith

8 жыл бұрынJarrett's "Ritooria" is a piece of music that has stuck with me since 1994 when I first heard it. I don't listen to it regularly because it's so intense, but the section from bar / measure 59 onwards has a very special place in my musical memory.

Fantastic work transcribing this. Facing You is my favorite KJ album. I first heard it in 1977 and it has not lost any of its appeal. I always recommend it to people who only know the Koln Concert. The music is demanding but it's also incredibly beautiful. One reason why it works better for me compared to his other solo outings is that the tracks are shorter. The longer tracks from his other albums can get uninspiring at times. The shorter tracks give each piece a greater cohesive structure. That they are improvised only makes them more impressive.

Same here. In fact, I think the ideas, inspiration, structures and emotion are much more advanced on Facing you than Koln Concert.

Very well done-Keith Jarrett has IMO the best touch on an acoustic piano in jazz- and you captured that along with the amazing lines he did over that pedal LH- (thankfully the left hand was that way- my head almost blew off trying to keep up as it was)

Nice job, amazing how you've placed the tuplets in and made good looking sheet music from it! Would take me months I guess.Btw what would that mysterious catsound be, in the background, at 5:18? ;)

+Vincent Grit Hah, good hearing. It's pretty faint in the background that one. I'm guessing it's just KJ being weird. (Or maybe it actually is a cat... ;)

Wow, incredible work, Mat ... thanks for your massive effort. Such a transcendent piece of music on one of the most transcendent albums ever. If forced to choose, I would pick Facing You as my favorite Jarrett album, although it would be excruciating to choose just one. The tune I'd most love to see transcribed is Landscape for Future Earth ... ever considered giving it a try?

A brilliant job! Funny how the comments here tend to relate to your labors and not the galactically deep magic Jarrett improvised on Facing You. Keith recorded this on a day off from Miles Davis in Europe. He had been playing those "toy" electric keyboards and was going nuts so he sat down and did the acoustic piano recording. I did an interview with Keith and asked specifically about "Facing You" I transcribed most of the alum in the 1970s....it changed my playing forever. jazztimes.com/articles/14383-keith-jarrett-whisper-not
