Excellent intro. Clear and concise. Told me everything I needed to know. Going to install this on my wifes laptop before she has a nervous breakdown trying to cope with Windows update on her old and not very powerful ASUS laptop. Thanks for posting. The only remaining question was about cloud printing but I've done a little research on that myself.

You're welcome. I'm glad it was helpful. CloudReady should certainly give the old laptop a new lease of life! Google recently retired their cloud printing system, so (other than using a third-party solution) printing is now handled by CUPS. You can access this local printing system by typing "localhost:631" (without the quotes) into the web browser. Thanks for your feedback.

Now it's probably too late for her, but everybody should know that in windows 10 the connection should be set as metered, et voilà, no more system updates, no more nervous breakdowns!

You're welcome. Glad you got your Dell laptop up and running with Cloudready. Unfortunately Chromebooks can be awkward when it comes to installing other operating systems. You have to put them into Developer Mode and even then they can be temporamental. Hope you get it sorted :)

Thank you for the very clear video. Can you please tell me what you see if you look at the USB stick in Windows Explorer. I see 2 drives. One Called EFI and another which is unreadable. I have done it twice with 2 different drives now and got the same result. Is this normal. I won't be trying to install on the old laptop till tomorrow.
@bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome :) Yes, that's normal. You're seeing the two partitions on the USB stick. Since Cloudready is based on Linux, Windows is unable read the contents of one of them. Hope that helps.

I am assuming that by using Cloudready on my old Chromebox, I would be getting the latest ChromeOS updates without the fear of the END OF LIFE on my old Chromebox. Would I be correct in that assumption?

Providing the hardware works with Cloudready then, yes, you are correct.

@bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, to run the Linux beta the hardware needs to support it. Check that you've got any virtualization options turned on in the BIOS/UEFI. Hope that helps.

With your help, I have now successfully installed Cloudready on an old Toshiba laptop, and I am gradually getting to grips with Chrome. One thing is puzzling me. All the document files I have in my Google Drive open fine in Google Docs, and I am able to edit them. No matter what I do, files downloaded from Drive or files in my backup USB stick will not run. It just asks me to select an app from the web store, none of which seem to work. I really would like to be able to view and work with files on my USB stick. Is this possible? what do I need to do. It's a bit of a bind having to upload everything to Drive to work on it. Any suggestions gratefully received.

It sounds as though the problem you're having is due to the files being office type documents and Cloudready not knowing what to do when you try to open them outside of Google Docs. Providing you're running the 64 bit version of Cloudready, you should be able to install the flatpack version of LibreOffice (a free and open source office suite). To do this, first download the software from the following website: flathub.org/apps/details/org.libreoffice.LibreOffice Once it has downloaded, double click the file to install it. When you next try and open one of your document files, you can then select LibreOffice as the application to do so :)

@@bytemypi2918 Sorry, that isn't working. I've looked at a couple of other videos on the subject, and they say that I should have Linux beta. In my settings there is no mention of Linux beta. Your video shows it is there. I have no sign of it. Should I try and reinstall or give up? Everything else seems to be working. I just can't open any files at all from local storage. I have to upload them to Drive first.
@pdbay47

I should add that I am on 64-bit
@bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 3 жыл бұрын
@@pdbay47 Apologies, it looks as though Cloudready has discontinued flatpack support. That leaves using the Linux beta (as you've heard) as the best option for installing an Office suite, which would then allow you to access your documents locally. This requires that the hardware supports virtualisation. If your laptop does, but the Linux beta isn't appearing, check that virtualization (VT-x/AMD-V) is enabled in the BIOS. If you still have no luck, have you considered installing a Linux distro on your laptop? I covered getting up and running with Zorin OS in one of my previous videos, which is a great option for getting started with Linux: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fNpgnsuZ3ZOznIk.html If you do take this route, since you mentioned it's an old laptop, I'd recommend going with "Zorin OS Lite". Hope all goes well :)

Why not just go to portable app and download the Crhome OS onto a thumbdrive. Presto change--Chromebook OS.
@bytemypi2918
@bytemypi2918 3 жыл бұрын
I believe its possible to run Chromium OS on a flash drive. Outside of testing, I prefer to install an operating system to the internal drive as it usually performs better. It's always good to have different options though :)

That's not good, but there are a few things you can try. If you enter your computer's BIOS/UEFI, try disabling 'Secure boot' and 'Fast boot'. Also enable CSM (Compatibility Support Module) if there's the option to do so. Hope that helps :)

To remove the operating system you can either wipe the drive using something like Gparted: gparted.org/ Alternatively, you could install another operating system over it.
