Man of God, You have summed up the last 10 yrs. of my life of ministering music. I might have to try this system out, and I like the fact that you used a midi track to teach the parts.

I just happened to come across this teaching. This was a blessing for me a non musician but just love to sing to the Lord and always wanting to do better. I Praise God for work of excellence! Thanks for sharing!
@MsJoyce3120210 жыл бұрын
This is also for musicians who have to teach parts and help the director in this area. If there is confusion on how parts sound and on what the choir must sing, the musician/director won't be overwhelmed. People are ALWAYS ready to tell you what you've Not done! I don't mean to be disrespectful, but they don't remember correctly and have the nerve to 'reteach' what you've taught already. I enjoy this tutorial.

WOW!!! Its such a coincidence that we have basically the same method of teaching parts. The only difference is that I actually spell out the notes. However, we get the same result and it really promotes accuracy at the same time. I really like how you've incorporated logic and midi with it to expidite the teaching process for rehearsals and this is definately something that I will be doing in the very near future with my music minisrty. Thank you and God Bless!!!

Terrell Gospocentric and prettysimplemusic , how long does it take to lay out a song like this, recording the keys and then recording each vocal track? Seems a little time consuming, but worth the end product. Are you playing from sheet music or by ear? I would like to branch out into this. I have the Logic, the keyboard, and I read/play by ear. I guess it gets easier/faster with each new song.
@prettysimplemusic10 жыл бұрын
the hardest part is figuring out what they are actually singing... the game has changed since 10 years ago...now vocals are much harder to pick out... but, I'd recommend you start small with basic gospel artist, then gradually move up into folks like this who are musical geniuses... If you know how to use your equipment quickly, it'll take anywhere from 3 hours to 8 hours...from typing, to listening, to sequencing... I don't do this for EVERY song, but if I anticipate a challenge for the vocalist, I'll certainly play the parts in advance!!! ;) Thanks for the support!!!
@gglocklear10 жыл бұрын
I studied classical as well and have no problem figuring out the parts. I've just always done it the old-fashioned way, LOL. I like this idea. I definitely have to visit your site! This is practically like creating the 'tracks' I've purchased in the past for cantatas and musicals. Genius.

I really appreciate your incite and how you freely share. I Like the number system because I have to share with musicians and choir directors of several churches. We form a combined choir, so I have to travel miles all over the USA to rehearse with them. Your method and the software that you endorse will save me a lot of time. I hear all parts at once (S, A, and T1, T2) and any off keys (a very keen ear), but what you recommend will help me train others. Thank you soooo much! I also like your suggestions on preparation...format, typing out lyrics and putting the numbers under them. And it is so true that the KEY does not matter because the patterns and intervals remain the same.

I personally stopped doing church gigs because I was tired of people trying to use my skills and talents as a way to conform to their way of religion and spirituality. I would always respect their religion but they wouldnt respect mine(I'm a Pansexual Pagan but enjoy Gospel music and even some messages from the Bible). So I left the church because i spiritually felt my skills or talent weren't being appreciated. Now fast forward a few years later, i moonlighted at a few keyboard gigs from bands to cocktail hours at hotels. Just at most a month ago, my friend started a community theater and needed a piano player, i was happy to help out a friend however the catch was the show was going to take place in a church. Now, i was skeptical at first but my friend knowing my background assured me this wasn't going to be a "worship" gig and that it was strictly going to be for the play not even being tied to religion even though it was being performed in a church. Well to help out my friend, i did the gig and it was great, even earned some good tips. After the show the pastor asked if i was interested in helping out the youth choir with their music, i haven't decided yet but the pastor seems like he wont play the games your pastor was playing with you so who knows

thank you! I used the same method (website & everything) to teach parts in 2008 when part of a church choir...I loved the songs and didn't want to have to put off singing because key people from a section missed rehearsal! LOL Now I do the same for my gospel group (me & my 3 kids). I used letters for notes but will now use the number system instead...it is SO MUCH easier! THANK YOU FOR THE TIP!! (We found Trey & SOZ on here about 2 months ago and were already working on Trey's song but the beautiful disonance was too difficult for me to pick out...thanks for this post!!) It's #BRILLIANT ~Blessings

While I really appreciate the tools you gave us, I feel like a lot of us has to be taught how to get rid of the music so we can here vocal parts. Vocal parts are a challenge to learn for a person who wasn't taught how to learn vocal parts... In some instance the general understanding of vocal part is 1-3-5 but it could also be inverted into 3-5-1, 5-1-3 etc... Richard smallwood is a master at bringing 4 part and maybe even 5 part harmonies into a song... I really hope you can respond and I will try to even get in touch with you at prettysimplemusic.com you are one of the few teachers that remind me of Greg Hannon. Greg has a great concept of teaching the foundation of Gospel music, I'm not trying to say he or you only teach gospel music, but what I'm saying it seems like you guys are one of the few that actually have a dedicated system for education in music...

I'm sorry, I haven't ready all of the comments. I assume you are familiar with the Nashville Number System, right? That's basically what this is, except you have to indicate major and minor next to the number. So, the opening chords would be 1 5/7 6- 5 4 5. So, that's what we use for the band. For the singers, we write numbers like that all the time. Works great.
@prettysimplemusic9 жыл бұрын
Hi and thanks for the support...Yep, I'm familiar with that system, I've produced for several southern gospel quartet groups out of Tennessee... I majored in Music Education, the number system was used many many years before it was known as the Nashville System... I was just the first to infuse lyrics with numbers into a Microsoft Word/Pdf format...

I have a question, but first. Great video, great choir. In basic a great system to work with, specially with people/singers who can't read music. My question is: This song is using only modal notes. No sharps or flats, only a complete modulation which is perfecly anounced by the chords of the piano. How would we write in numbers a more difficult song where also temporary modal shifts happen. How can the singers know that we are changing key for a few bars? I cannot figure out how we should write that in this system. I was trained in classical music reading, but i definately see the benefits of numbers, I just can't get the system to work also in advanced situations. Who can help me out. (sorry for my bad english, i'm from holland).

This was an awesome video fam!...I would like to add that as a black man, I must say, White Folk's - Sheet Music Incorporates Everything One Needs for documenting a precise and accurate Music documentation. Gary S. Karpinski look him up fellow musicians. This is an awesome system...but it is extra work, when you understand that it is an isolation. but it is more helpful to some when you use the numbers and letters. but when reading music you can see the motion and direction of the notes just like in this midi.
