Transform your writing into something you're very proud of by crafting powerful sentences.
Do you worry that your point is not coming across clearly in your academic or business writing? Are your opportunities in school, work and life limited because your writing is not as powerful and direct as it could be? Erin shares several points to make your sentences clear, concise and powerful. Like all writing, science writing needs attention to word choice and order to communicate your ideas clearly, quickly and accurately.
This video is in response to a request by from Kabul University, regarding how to improve academic science writing. But these tips apply to anyone trying to improve their writing and communicate clearly in almost any field.

After a brief review of grammar, Erin looks at a few key tips to transform your writing, and ensure strong, direct, active sentences that will get your point across. Choosing the best words for 'doers' (subjects) and 'actions' (verbs) is a key skill that gives you control over your writing. Active and passive writing choices will also impact your writing.
Remember to:
1. Use doer + action (or subject + verb) to create your sentence.
2. Include 5 Ws when needed.
3. Consider word order: active or passive voice
4. Use a strong, concrete doer.

Thank you so much for developing the video about the sentence. I watched the video three times with full concentration. The video (How to Write Powerful Sentences) developed and prepared very well. I liked that the sentences must answer at least two wh-questions (who/what) and it is much better to explain all five questions (who, what, when, where, why) . The video talked about active and passive voice with details and there were enough examples regarding active and passive voice. It is much appreciated to touch types of sentences (simple, compound, complex and compound and complex) because they help writers to bring variations in their writing. I am looking forward to watching upcoming videos.

You know I have a problem not being able to convey my ideas with a certain clarity and all the times I want to say one thing I end up saying other. Thank you for replying. Well, I believe I am aware much of this advice in these videos (I have watched your videos and have got my insights of these rules from those). Yet, I find it too hard to write something sensible. And by my writing insensibly I don't mean my writing doesn't make sense at the sentence level but it is normally at the paragraph level. Moreover, I find it hard to generate ideas.

Hi again! I'm sorry, this reply was hidden and I just saw it now for some reason! I think the 2 go together. We need clarity in order to be effective. If the message isn't clear, it can't become effective. So I would say we want to write a draft, then go back and focus on clarity, then go back and focus on adding any detail needed for effectiveness. Thanks for your insightful questions! Great question; I think it can be quite difficult. Usually, when I am not sure how formal or complex my words should be (which should depend on what's best for my reader), I will try to "mirror" what I see from others. If someone I'm emailing with, or a client, or a textbook, or a website uses a certain kind of language, you can often then adapt your own to reflect that.
