The fact they didn't just remold one of their existing jet molds is commendable on its own. I was honestly half expecting a heavy remold of Starscream.

I spent 2 years on an aircraft carrier and a lot of time around Tomcats. The pod on the front is a giant camera system used for targeting and tracking.

If this was a standard TF I think its passable, but what hurts this a lot is that it’s part of the Collab line. Ectotron and Gigawatt turned out great. Maverick by comparison is lacking. A great F14 mode and meh robot mode undermined by a poor paint job.

Aside from the arms, there's a surprising lack of kibble in the jet mode! Kudos to Takara for managing to make an "aerodynamic" looking jet turn into a robot!

I’m really surprised that they used the Cybertron: Thundercracker figure as the base for this guy. Interesting to see some older figures get used like this since the other two are from current figures

Maverick has some pretty neat looking engineering and design. Although he could definitely use some more paint/detailing on the robot mode and the weapons. Maybe something from Toyhax could help on that part. And that was quite the interesting ending skit.

I think that thing which retracted and went back up is essentially a jet version of a headlight. My father was a WSO in these things while doing an exchange tour with the Navy from the Air Force. Interesting fact he was actually at Miramar when they were filming TopGun and was teaching Navy guys not to do the stupid things Maverick was doing. He also threw a shoe at the TV screen the first time he saw TopGun because of all the things Maverick got away with. If you like I can ask him for you about any technical questions you have about the F-14. Edit: after watching the video again and playing through Ace Combat 7 with the F-14D I agree with icewolf1974 and what I originally though was a retractable light is in fact not retractable on the actual jet and is labled as the infrared seeker/TV optical unit on the only diagram with labels I could find large enough to read.

This figure has to have one of the cleanest jet modes in all of transformers.

Cleanest-looking jet mode I saw and the transformation is kinda similar to Macross.

I've said this in another review for this toy, it's alot like an unreleased veritech design. With the right leg hinges it could pull of a gerwalk.

Honestly I like the robot mode, it's the single colour that's the letdown for me. They could've done little things like, I dunno, painting the cockpit interior, missiles, and guns black (or moulding them in black), and bringing the pattern from the topside of the jet mode round to cover the robot mode as well. It seems like a bit of a last minute thing from that.

Optimus prime dancing is why I love this channel

First jet transformer that actually hides just about all the robot and I'm quite impressed. Plus I think his hands rotate when you were switching them.

I have to say I love this figure even though he is lacking in paint. Reminds me of RoboTech lol. BTW the dirt is actually "digital camouflage". As others have said, he does look like he should glow in the dark, and though that would make no sense at all, that would make him even more cool. Dare I say "Why Not".

The thing that flips up and down under the nose is a jamming/television pod. The little lump on the bottom is the jamming pod, an ALQ-100 and the main of it is the television pod. It’s used to record engagements that the jet participates in and to increase the visual range of the pilot.

Honestly this is the only crossover figure I'm grabbing. my grandfather was one of the designers for the F-14 Tomcat. granted I'm going to repaint the whole thing before putting official stikers and a commemorative name plate tag that says captain Ike.

3:41 Emgo316, that is the T.V. Sighting System. It can get video/visual confirmation of a target from beyond visual range. It allowed an F-14 Pilot and R.I.O. to know exactly what they would be firing at if they had to.

Maybe the lack of paint (white-ish) kind of represents Maverick’s dress uniform?? Only thing I can think of to justify the lack of paint

Good review. This figure just screams for the lack of paint. Even more noticable when you put Starscream and Ectrotron next to it. Real shame as with some paint I think the figure would present so much better.

3:47 that’s a chinpod on the F14, it is mostly used for IRST (depending on the variant) and is most likely vitally important for the F14 because it makes it capable to go beyond visual range.

I've been to the town where Top Gun was filmed a few times. It's actually in Mojave, CA on it's way to Las Vegas. The motorcycle scene that got copied in Star Wars and other movies was right in front of best wesern which is noiw gone

3:42 Radar and guidance equipment. that is used for surveilance missions (the two cameras arround the piece) and to guide Radar Missiles (the equipment inside the nose of the aircraft). common equipment, especially in the F-14 Tomcat since it was a jet from the 70's/80's, and was sadly decomissionized (hence the dirty spots on the paint). the wings folded back when the jet achieved more than 800km/h to make it fly faster (less drag), and folded foward to avoid the plane plummeting to the ground in low speeds (the famous stall). his guns are external fuel storage tanks, and i imagine how confused would he be when the human pilot needs to jetisson them out when the fuel runs out on them... he would be unarmed at that point... XD -also i got a lot of Macross/Robotech vibes from this figure... i wonder why... XD-

Weird that Maverick seems to be a completely new mold, especially since Ectotron and Gigawatt were heavy retools. Maybe that means that the Maverick mold will be reused for something else later? For some reason I get a GoBots vibe from him, so maybe Hasbro will do something with the Leader-1 character.

The paint job that this figure has is probably what we SHOULD have gotten from the so called "battle damage" from Siege.

Definitely don’t regret canceling my preorder for this. It’s neat in some ways, but there were too many things I didn’t like that didn’t justify the price.

It’s nice seeing a transformer that isn’t blatantly obvious that it’s a robot because it’s not suffering from the the seeker problem of jet on top of robot

The thing about the wings is they are moved back when gaining speed and spread out when at low speeds

Some paint would go a long way in making that robot mode pop. I wonder if Hasbro has plans to use that mold for the the G2 Cyberjets.

As is typical of this range, the vehicle mode is very accurate, and the transformation appears intricately fun, but the robot mode ends up looking like a Gobot.

Other pop culture movie vehicle movie crossovers could be, Smokey & the Bandit Convoy The Last Starfighter (either the Space-car or the spacecraft he uses) Batman (Michael Keaton version, or the others. My favourite one was the Val Kilner one) Battle Beyond the Stars Tron Ferris Bueller's Day Off (the Ferrari) Flight of the Navigator Blade Runner... Plus many, many others. This series of crossovers could go on for quite some time.

The transformation reminds of Thundercracker's from Transformers Cybertron (the Transformers with the flying firetruck Prime). The only thing missing is that left arm with a cannon.

I didn't know about this movie until I saw this review. I called up my attention and watch it. It is a good movie. My surprise came when I heard that all of the name of members of Fans Toys' Superion where take from character of that movie O_O (I say it in case that nobody has notice it)

I ordered one to open and one to stay in the package and it's over a month since they were supposed to be released. I presume because you've got one, Hasbro isn't under any restrictions in terms of release, like, they don't need to wait for the Top Gun sequel to be allowed to release it. Here's hoping, I'm desperate for my Mav!

This would have been much better as a darker grey, even that lovely metallic grey Netflix Megatron came in. It kind of looks like this figure would glow in the dark.

I'm fully aware of how silly this is, but there was a part of me that hoped in the bot mode comparisons you would do Fans Toys Silverbolt (I'm just assuming you have him in bot mode, probably not worth transforming it for this) to give us Maverick and Maverick.
