Love! Love! Love the way Ms. McDonald takes on and tackles the issues encountered in small NYC apartments. I live in a small house (under 1000') so her ideas & style helps me plan out future projects in my home. Also, I get very excited when a project she's working on a "pre-war" home that she either brings back original details or updates while staying true to the style.

Oh my goodness!!! I love the upgrades of the renovation, but what impressed me the most is how you integrated the vibrant colors, while keeping a modern feel. Normally, I would consider that a more neutral palette might seem more orderly, but dang, color can be fabulous! I will be painting my bedroom pronto. His room of stuff he couldn't part with is absolutely wonderful! I just love how you made this place great with using and considering his things!!!

I agree, I find Paula very knowledgeable and I enjoy how she discusses the detail of the work beyond decorating but into the renovation/structural changes and the "before and after" discussion of the challenges and triumphs of meeting the customers needs with respect to their lifestyle and how they will use the newly engineered spaces.

Yes! It is easy to decorate in the suburbs where houses are new, with recent blueprints and endless wall space to move things around but to make such functional and beautiful home with the constraints of city living takes a lot of ingenuity! She is also great at keeping elements from the original design that work. So many designers have a "raze it to the studs" mentality.

The dark blue bedroom wallpaper should have continued all around the room. Dark bedroom walls are great for a nighttime room, but it looks like you ran out of wallpaper. BTW, I'm a decorator who has done apartments in some of the best buildings in NYC. 770 Park, 1035 Fifth, 1 Beekman, etc. Anyway, this lady knows her stuff. She has courage for all the headaches renovating gives, even experts. P.S. The Ralph Lauren console is nice looking, but screams, "reproduction!".
@dannycarrington1601
@dannycarrington1601 5 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing, that wallpaper should be on all four walls. I'd all move the tall chest of drawers to the wall to the left of the entrance; the desk, dresser and chest all on one wall is too much.
@MTMF.london
@MTMF.london 5 жыл бұрын
If the dark blue wallpaper had gone all around the room it would be so overwhelming for the room. The Ralph Lauren console IS a reproduction and no one was fooled. Don't be a snob.
@stevie68a
@stevie68a 5 жыл бұрын
@@MTMF.london I stand by my statement about the wall.paper. As for the console, RL furniture is very expensive, and it should have one guessing if it's an antique or repro. Ms. McDonald does beautiful high end work, So this is not my snobbery, maybe just little fine tuning. Otherwise, why have comments?

I don't have a dog in this fight, but why didn't you go with the washer/dryer all-in-one? And with the ventilation in mind, you know there are dryers (I think, maybe they are just concepts) that freeze clothes to remove moisture. I would think your clientele might spring for these (if they really exist).
@MTMF.london
@MTMF.london 5 жыл бұрын
The "concept" of freezing clothes is a non-starter because it doesn't remove moisture - the moisture (i.e., water) just becomes ice!

How much on average does it cost to remodel these apartments?
@pmddllc
@pmddllc 6 жыл бұрын
The Mann Report recently published an average of $340 a square foot for Manhattan renovations. It can be less than or more than this depending on finish selections, and size of the apartment... I think NYC is probably one of the most expensive cities for renovation costs for many reasons.

As a designer/illustrator, myself, I've got mixed emotions about this place. While it's classy and elegant on one hand, all this white on the walls and neutral colors for the most part leave me cold. I would have liked to have seen more natural wood tones like a butcher block counter in the kitchen and maybe white or wood tone shutters on the windows instead. Not crazy about plasma screens over fireplaces and would rather see original art or a framed print. Not crazy about washer/dryer in foyer, but if there was no choice, c'est la vie! Love many of the things you did, but also reminds me of hotel decorating. Used to live at 210 East 77th St in 1970 when it was the famous Studio Club when I worked as a fashion illustrator in NYC! Beautiful neighborhood! Thanks for sharing~

I think that she has to do what the client requests. I am sure Paula makes many very clever and stylish recommendations but if the owners like neutral colors or minimal styles then that is what she has to do to fit the clients lifestyle. I love the work that she does on the renovations and have used many ideas (of course modified to fit a modest budget).

Well that’s her signature style. Basically, the clients who choose her love her style. So if her style is not your taste, don’t hire her. It’s about choosing the right designer for you. You can’t expect a modernist designer to design a traditional project.
