Very satisfying, watching clever hard-working people transform the desert into a flourishing garden with carefully applied water and studying the soil carefully to know how to provide what it needs to bring forth abundant produce. Providing shade for some plants at some periods of their growth helped a great deal, too, and tailoring the use of equipment to prevent soil compaction will prevent problems consequence to such compaction. Many lessons have been learned which would help other arid areas if people would apply the techniques which worked here.

"carefuly applied water" ? They just drill for underground water, it's incredibly wasteful. How is is carefully applied when you don't even mulch your plants ? Don't even plant trees and perennial vegetation to rebuild the soil ?

There is no underground water. The seeds are planted under the thin tube with holes every few centimeters. Water us jumped during certain times a day and the water reaches directly to the roots, making sure 100% of the water is used and not evaporate in the Negev desert heat. Israel does not have much water but lately we have desalination plants to overcome the problem.

I lived on this Moshav 1980.......much smaller then - but this video brings back memories. It was incredibly hot. I lived in a small outbuilding with no windows. The family i worked for were wonderful. We used to start work before sunrise, have a long break in the middle of the day, work into the evening and then head to a bar that was in some sort of bunker. I was in Israel as I lost my job and read an article about Moshavs in the Daily Mail I had no connection with the Jewish faith or Israel. I was a 20 year old from south London with only enough cash to buy a ticket to Israel. The people on the Moshav really looked after me. We had to work hard but there was instant respect for anyone who turned up and worked hard.

The Arizona desert receives enough water to grow a lot of vegetation. Flash floods drop a lot of water but because of the lack of vegetation and soil, the water flows off the land and this causes even more erosion. The rain cycle has been disrupted, etc. India, China, and other countries have good examples of how this works.

Over a century ago, Arizona was forested on the mountains and savannah in the canyons and valleys. Like Israel, when they cut the trees, the rains were stalled, or had fits and starts. Trees are coming back, but ranchers plant, and then pay taxes on the trees' value. It's grotesque that the federal government stops so much progress bringing Arizona back to normal. We had a native parrot (thick bill, he ain't too bight ya see :) that is trying to come back, but there's not enough ponderosa pines to keep them fed.

Floods come and the water goes within weeks. It just disappears until the rains come again. If there's nothing to keep it around, to hold it in the soil the rain just goes away, it runs eventually into the ocean.

There has been a lot of desert farming in Arizona for over 4000 years. Maybe there are some crops here that are desert tolerant which can be used in Israel. I hope you all continue to prosper, lahium!

Yes! There's been work done on honey mesquite to make the pods drop all at once (so they can be picked like olives). Mexico has a silk worm that eats out acacia. Phacelia, a major early spring native bee plant, has been carried around the world. It's in bloom now in the yard. Work on Nopal cactus for better nopalitos and fruit. There are dozens of things Israel Ag is doing. Look at the maize. Like a lot of grains, Israel is developing new varieties to tolerate brackish water.

@@Maroqu1n I just wish Israel would get credit for all the word she puts into helping even her enemies. Is there a better nation? Mine always loved her. Even when we were pagans and fighting colonists, we welcomed Jews. You know their work is blessed of G'd because it thrives. When Palestinians forced a take over of settlements, everything Israel did, even though it was followed exactly as the PA was taught, withered like it was cursed.

you have no clue how much destruction desalination plants do to the coastline. The salty brine which is left over gets dumped back into the sea. It's much denser than the sea water, so the salt falls to the sea floor, cutting off oxygen and killing everything in a very large area.

So they are drilling for water and importing soil. How sustainable is that? Do they need to import more soil and does their drilling impact the water supply in the region? Would be interesting to know how this exactly works.

We were in the Negev in 1991 to see and learn the methods used to extract water from an ancient ocean below the sands. They drill down using the same method as drilling for oil using explosives to locate the oil below using a special device to find the location. Sometimes go a mile or two and find salt water from an ancient ocean. At times the water is so hot that it's placed in water holding ponds to cool off. The cool water in turn is used to water plants in the sandy fields of the Negev desert as it does not rain. The water is then mixed with liquid fertilizer and trickle irrigation hoses carry the saltwater to acres of plantlets out in the desert. Of course, you may question the use of salt water as it's well known such toxic water would kill all the plants. However, they graft salt-resistant rootstock onto the plants which convert saltwater to freshwater, cleaver aye.

It isn't sustainable. It's like living on the Mars. You have to bring everything you need with you. The salty water that get's pumped miles from down the ground is getting less, like oil or gas that get's pumped. The water from the ground is used to water the plants for these vegetables. Because of there are no people living, it's a desert, these vegetables are getting exported. So the water that's now in the vegetables, don't get back in this desert ground. And since there is no rain the whole year, it will get drier and drier there. It's all a circle.

Only if there was a machine/robot to plant the seedballs properly, fast at scale and water these seedballs once in while. Maybe if the seedball was made by adding manure of local species like goats and cows, they may not graze/eat it. #savesoil

Ni, it should be not. Digging deep wells is not sustainable. Saudi Arabia does the same, and it won't work in the future. I think that Israelis are very smart with the amount of water they use but for the future it is necessary to capture the rain that falls and out in in the ground again. There are a lot of examples here on KZfaq that show that it is possible, with comparably not much work. That way Israel could further increase bits fertile land and feed its people. I wish forthe Israelis that one day they don't need such a strong army (yes, I like Israelis) to have the resources to do so.
