PSA: this video was more a commercial for buying necessary gear, and less info about how to climb outdoors. For that, participate in a course at a local crag to learn building and cleaning an anchor, belay differences, bailing out etc. And google or ask for info on access to specific crags, including parking, noise, accepted paths, dangers on the way and on the routes.

Step 1 - Go to an outdoor climbing crash course. There are a lot of extra things you never learn indoors, and there are no instructors around like in the gyms.

If you put a locking carabiner on the anchors how are you supposed to retrieve it?

You'd be better off taking a lesson or a course for outdoor anchor building. But basically you use the lanyard/cowtail only to attach you temporarily from your harness to the anchor, so that you can do whatever you need to do (set up or clean up the anchor) and at the end you thread the rope through the fixed metal loops, clean your gear to come with you and lower yourself from the fixed gear.

The above is all assuming you have a fixed anchor to use! If you're climbing trad you'll likely 'top out' and simply walk back down with your gear.

@@chuckz28 please don't try it without having someone instructing you there. And never do anything up there alone for the first time. Try it out on the ground first so that you can ask someone else who is knowledgeable on the issue, so that you're 100% confident at the anchor.

Aside from the fact that bouldering is a far easier way to transition to outdoor climbing, this video seems like a sales pitch, rather than a proper instructional video. It ends at what is arguably the most important and dangerous part of outdoor sport climbing, not showing how to get back down safely! I’d very strongly recommend using a coach for your first session if you can afford it, or going out with someone who has experience, but if you insist on learning from a KZfaq video, I’d recommend JB Mountain Skills’ channel; Jez does some excellent instructional videos, including this one: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/e9B0gdOK3JrQY2g.htmlsi=S23N6A30CjLx8UZQ
