I found an old pair of Radio Shack TL towers in a thrift store, from about 1985 best guess, they actually still worked. But I dropped in 8" full range drivers and disconnected the tweeter. Wow amazing magic sound for all types of music, and I spent a total of $150. I don't know why someone isn't making these now, I have some great speakers but I mostly listen to these, even for classic rock radio, just so deep and full. And highly efficient, 100db plus easy and cheap to build.

Lovely build! Question, is there a reason you choose to put the full range driver at the beginning of the line? Putting the driver at approx. 1/3 rd of the line will reduce the typical transmission line "hole" resulting in a smoother lower midrange response. Btw. I know it's seems intuitively better to "round off" the inner corners of the line but doing so results in more midrange frequencies making it's way through the line and therefore colouring the sound. Long wavelengths aren't hindered by not rounding off the corners.

I'm just learning about building speakers as a bit of a hobby so, appreciate your advise. Seems there is just so much advice online about building this type of speaker and I went down one of these routes. I'm sure with experience, and testing the builds will improve.
@MrAKbass
@MrAKbass 2 жыл бұрын
@@DIY-AUDIO The build quality looks very good though so my initial thought was that you're not really a beginner so to speak. Transmission lines are some of the more advanced designs. A good piece of simulation software (e.g. AJHorn) could help you make your transmission line builds even better. Keep up the great work!
@juststuff5216

@@MrAKbass kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7tji7pnubydqn0.html There's no ROT when it comes to speaker design, let alone t-line design. The 1.3 rule was propagated by Bose, but it's not the be-all and-end all, and like many other assumption t-line, it shouldn't be used in every design. Any individual design is based on the driver, the respective environment it's going into, and the individual listening preferences! And I don't agree that t-lines are some of the more advanced designs … in fact I think it's one of the easiest to get right. You just need a pen/pencil, a piece of paper or something to write on, and some very basic maths! Things go awry when one starts to add damping ... and I think that's what some may feel t-lines are tricky. But as the above video link shows, one can design and get right, a t-lines, without damping … in fact in my near 35 years of designing and building t-lines, I've rarely if ever used the stuff! As for other designs BR, Aperiodic, Bandpass and even to some degree, Horns … are far more tricky to design from off the top of one's head, and get right … IMO
@MrAKbass
@MrAKbass 2 жыл бұрын
@@juststuff5216 For a DIY starter a TL is advanced. A horn and TL can be simulated with AJhorn wich uses the same "model" to calculate it (and it's more accurate then pen/paper + basic math). It can also show you the effect of placing the driver on a different position of the line. For a system that will only be used as a sub it's perfectly valid to put the driver at the beginning of the line and in such cases you don't need excessive damping material (I also have approx. 35 years of experience desgning and building loudspeakers) Btw. how can you tell by the video that the t-line is right and can't be perfected by using a different design philosophy?
@Grommet2007
@Grommet2007 Жыл бұрын
@@MrAKbass FWIW I wouldn't end-load a TL even if it was destined for subwoofer duty. The first resonance calculation may make integration with the main speakers a bit challenging. That resonance is depending on the length of the line only (not the amount of taper, etc.) and putting the driver 1/3rd of the way down the line effectively nulls it out. How effective the nulling is will also depend on how close the driver and the vent are to each other as well (which is why my TL designs have the driver and vent as close together as possible) The peaks and nulls that appear higher in frequency due to harmonic resonances down the line can be addressed by stuffing some parts of the line if necessary, but that first resonance is low enough in frequency that it needs to be addressed by other means. Hornresp can be used to sim what stuffing does to the response curve, and will also show that position of the driver and the size of the TL might have to be adjusted to compensate. FWIW, I thought that the sound of those speakers in the video shared by Just Stuff was not impressive. Just looking at the design gave me the impression that it would sound like a boomy "bass whistle" without decent midbass reproduction, and the sound of the speakers in the video just backed that up, LOL. But that could be because of the recording quality, and an FR curve would have provided a lot more information about how those speakers were really performing, at least on-axis....

Τhere are two ways to construct a TL : keeping the port the same throughout the length or having it tapered (usually to 1/2) of tube cross-section. You seem to follow the first route but the final exit part seems a bit larger in volume. If this is not an optical illusion what was the thought behind it?

Thanks - Reason for smaller size was the wife accepting having them in the house!! and as you will notice from the other builds on my channel, I try and build speakers that most people can afford to build (whilst still building to a good quality finish) hence this full range driver and the cost of it (relatively low) of the 4" drivers . With regards to frequency (I haven't tested them but hope to in the future). More builds coming in the near future with another smaller cube build incorporating this same driver.

you might wanna be careful using a table saw while wearing gloves. when you are wearing gloves and you accidentally touch the rotating blade they can get tangled up and kind of "suck in" your whole hand. without gloves you might be lucky and just get a small cut or in the worst case loose a finger (still better then half of your hand)

I am sure that yours will look great in a high gloss finish!!

Speakers look nice but practically useless to be honest. You called it transmission line but what I see is more like umm 4th order bass reflex with really interesting approach. The goal of TL is to get rid of resonances and you've made not one but two resonance chambers (one right behind a speaker and one at the far end)
@DIY-AUDIO
@DIY-AUDIO 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comments. I do understand your point and take on board what you are getting at. These don't really suffer from much if any resonance as they had been very well damped with insulation of various types after the photos were taken and only have 20 watt max full range drivers. My main aim here was to demonstrate a build process.
