Transport for Wales train fleet/rolling stock. Transport for Wales (AW) is a train operating company in Great Britain (mainly serving Wales) operated by the Welsh government since taking over the franchise in 2021.
TfW operate services across the country of Wales serving every welsh station as well as operating route into England. TfW have a metro style routes in South Wales around the Cardiff Valley Lines from Central and Queen Street stations to Merthyr, Aberdare, Treherbert, Barry, Bridgend, Maesteg, Ebbw Vale and Newport. They also operate regional services such as those from Manchester to Cardiff, Birmingham to Aberystwyth, Cardiff to Carmarthen/Milford Haven and Manchester to Holyhead. TfW also operate rural local and long distance routes such as the West Wales lines, Heart of Wales line, Conwy Valley line and Cambrian lines.
This video shows the current train fleet (December 2023) along with the future rolling stock and past rolling stock for this operator.
The Transport for Wales train fleet is currently in the process of being nearly entirely replaced.
Older rolling stock from Arriva Trains Wales that TfW operate/have operated (to be replaced) included class 150 Sprinter, class 158 Express Sprinter, class 175 Coradia 1000, class 170 Turbostar, class 142/class 143 Pacer, class 769 Flex, Mark 3 locomotive hauled carriages.
The class 153 Sprinter currently operated with be split with some leaving TfW and some remaining for the Heart of Wales line Shrewsbury to Swansea service with some of the single carriage units being converted to become active travel units with more bike/luggage capacity.
The Mark 4 carriages with class 67 Locomotive are not new rolling stock but have joined within the last few years (some ex LNER and some ex Grand Central) and will be remaining with the operator for more premier services from Holyhead and Manchester to Cardiff via the Marches line.
New rolling stock that entered service/is entering service is the class 197 CAF Civity 2 and 3 carriage trains, class 230 D Train (ex London Underground) and class 231 Stadler FLIRT (bi mode).
New rolling stock planned to enter service in the next year are the class 398 Citylink tram trains for the core valley lines via Pontypridd which will give options for future street running extensions. class 756 tri mode FLIRT trains for the Rhymney/Penarth/Barry valley lines.
The train fleet information is correct as possible as of December 2023 and future train fleet dates are based for the planned introduction for passenger services. Past Train Fleet is based on when the current Transport for Wales operation has been in operation since 2018.

It's a shame that TransPennine Express did not get rid of the class 68/mark 5 sooner as these would have been perfect for TfW instead of the older class 67/mark 4 as well as not requiring a non passenger carrying driving trailer. This would also allow for more services to be operated by loco hauled sets meaning class 197 operated services could also be doubled up on more services.

Once all the new trains are in service TfW will have one of the most improved train fleets of any operator with all the new trains offering improvements over the older trains especially the 150 and 153. The use of more Mark 4 of the Manchester to Cardiff route is great as this is a long distance route that now gets an improvement in capacity and comfort and first class offering. I do think a few more 197 should have been ordered to allow all the 153 to be withdrawn as it does not makes sense that only a few 153 are to be kept just for the Heart of Wales when a few more 197 could be ordered, this is even more frustrating as the Heart of Wales is a nice route but the 153 have fairly poor views due to the height of the windows.

Idk why they just used the 158s to run that line There so much better then 153s

Problem is with both the 197s and the 158s on the HOW line is clearance so I understand. You do fear for the future of that line as they have tried various options and only 40 yr old sprinters seem to be suitable

I hope they fit some 3 carriage class 197 with equipment for Aberystwyth/Pwllheli as otherwise there will be a drop in seating and toilet capacity for what are very popular fairly long routes in the summer as this would allow 6 carriages to Machynlleth where 3 each could go to each destination at busy times.

They won’t, a 2 car 158 only just fits in some platforms on the Cambrian line, they use the middle doors only so idk how there going to do that when the 197s arrive And a lot of the platforms have land rises up for the middle doors too

Apparnetly TfW are getting ex-Northern 153s to be converted into Bicyle spaces like ScotRail have done with the West Higland Line, these will be used on the Heart of Wales line. Unknown how many TfW will get I assume its the remaining ones.

With the Class 153 and Class 158 they should go to Northern or GWR. And the Class 175 cascaded to ScotRail or Northern. And the remaining Class 170 cascaded to EMR.

At the moment I'm writing this, TfW's fleet is an absolute mess. Since not all the new trains are in service yet, and TfW just got rid of their Northern loaned units, the rest of the 170s and the 175s in a 2 month period of time, they're struggling to keep up with the amount of services on their timetable and many are being cancelled/delayed due to this. I think its just a matter of struggling through until their new trains arrive in full force. Such as the complete fleet of 197/1s and 231s being able to head onto different routes such as Maesteg - Cheltenham and Cardiff to Ebbw Vale. But at the moment, probably just a waiting game. Still, TfW should've seen this coming as some units just have to be in maintenance following resistance against the harsh winter weather, in summer they might've been okay, as there wouldn't be as much maintenance work required on their fleet and more units would be avaliable. But still as stated earlier, its only a matter of time.

In 2019/2020 Transport for Wales used class 37 hauling Mark 2 carriages on a limited number of Rhymney services.
