@@jayrock4716 hi! I actually did not.. I failed pretty significantly...😂 HOWEVER, it didn't stop me from graduating with a First Class degree in Psychology or a Masters Of Science in Cyberpsychology at the end of this year! So keep your head up if you're as remotely stressed as I was, I promise it will pay of in some strabge and unexpected ways! 🥰

@@fantasyuwu8076 Thank you!! I actually failed in the end (oops) but I'm still doing pretty well for myself 😂 if you're here through your own studies, I'll be thinking of you! Keep your head up and remember that, although it may feel like it, the world will not in fact end if not everything goes to plan! 🥰 You got this!

I'm sorry if I'm confused here but you said that the cytoplasm of the root hair cell already has quite a negative water potential and through manipulation it gets quite a negative water potential to allow water to flow into the cytoplasm by osmosis. I get that the cell uses ATP to move mineral ions into the cytoplasm so it becomes more concentrated with mineral ions and there is a smaller concentration of water but if it already has a negative water potential why waste energy?

Symplastic = water moves by Osmosis Apoplastic = water moves by Diffusion
@elamb2017

Njmstorm Well, osmosis is diffusion of water. In the apoplastic pathway water moves by cohesion tension.

So can't the plant root hair cells absorb water before mineral ions just by simple diffusion? If no can you please explain why thanks!
@halimac3631
@halimac3631 8 жыл бұрын
i think it's because simple diffusion occurs only up until the concentration of the solutes are equal. in this case the concentration of solutes inside the root hair cells needs to be higher than the soil in order for there to be a gradient and osmotic effect so the water can move down a concentration gradient by osmosis.

At 4:53 when you start talking about the 'in the xylem', is that the same explanation for root pressure?
@MrPollockBiology
@MrPollockBiology 9 жыл бұрын
Tiam Nowrouzzadeh effectively yes... root pressure is caused by movement of water into the root via osmosis; therefore there is a positive pressure which forces water up the xylem (a little!)

Question..is the xylem IN the root or only the stem bc it seems like its also in root
@MrPollockBiology

The xylem extends to the base of the stem and along the root...the diagram in this video is a shortened pathway
@solaly9874
@solaly9874 9 жыл бұрын
wait so water travels up the root hair first to the base of the stem then through the cortex to xylem? Because the cortex should only be near where the xylem is right? Sorry its just so hard to visualise.

But doesn't the root hair cell come off horizontally to the actual root like this diagram seems to suggest the xylem is in the root too www.sparknotes.com/biology/plants/plantstructures/section2.rhtml
