When I moved OUT of NJ, this is what I did: I drive a pickup truck with a bed box. I locked the firearm in the bed box (locked on both sides) and inside the box, I locked the ammunition in a separate lock box, Now you know why I LEFT NJ for a free state. Get out while you can.

I'm a Georgia Resident. A Veteran of the U.S. Navy who Served aboard the USS Trenton LPD-14. For years I've wanted to visit the USS New Jersey. Although my Sidearm would be unloaded and secured in a locked box, I would still have concerns about coming into this state. The " BIG J " is the most Iconic of all Iowa class Battleships. She even served this Nation through the Vietnam conflict. Remarkable part of American History but not worth the risk of going to Jail.

Good video and very informative.. But damn if one did not know what a firearm was, The first question would be is it a hazardous material like propane tanks rolling about?? can these things spontaneously cause damage or explode? Thanks Steve, you're doing us a service but my neck gets sore from shaking my head from time to time.

Great info. Thank you . Now I have a question I'm a legal gun owner in the State of New Jersey. I want to go to my friends home who lives in Pennsylvania for a week, and we are going out shooting on his property, which is legal to do. How and what do I do to transport my firearm in the back of my truck, which I also have a deck system in the back of my truck that is lockable. Without going through any legal repercussions. Thank you.

For my range bags. I lock my firearms in one pocket (unloaded no ammo or mags) in another pocket (unlocked) I have loaded mags. These are under the back seat of my truck cab. The ammo is “separate” and the firearm is locked and unloaded. I wonder if an officer would punish me for this. Not sure the added safety of having the ammo in a separate bag also unlocked also right under the seat? Maybe you have some thoughts.

So a non resident going to NJ to shoot sporting clays with a shotgun during a week long vacation stay in NJ would not seem to fit in any of the laws. Aside from keeping it locked and the ammo separate.

The new law incorporated the old law regarding this: "...shall be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported, and in the course of travel shall include only deviations as are reasonably necessary under the circumstances." "Reasonably necessary under the circumstances" usually meant stopping for food/restroom, etc... There was talk about them amending this part to not be so restrictive but they didn't seem to address it in the new law.

What does "fastened/securely tied" mean. A zipper bag, zip tie, or does it have to be an actual lock? Ammo goes in secured box does that mean it needs to have a lock as well?
@martelltraininggroup

The statute doesn't specify so I interpret it to mean just "not readily accessible to the driver/passengers." As far as the lock for ammo goes, that is preferred but not specified so I would use best judgement.

Yes! Here is a link to my short video on transporting on a motorcycle: kzfaq.info9tRhcQRpGu0 In summary, firearms unloaded. This interesting! If I am non resident and transporting to airport in NJ does that become my final destination? I was told by someone that their friend who is PA resident was going to airport in NJ and had firearm properly secured but was arrested and charged. Also for non resident to get a permit in NJ you’d have to get certified with own firearm so is range or training place someone you can legally transport to? NJ just seems to have weirdest rules or I would say they have no actual rules so they leave ton of gray area where anyone from law enforcement or courts can pretty much make up a “law” as they go!
@martelltraininggroup
@martelltraininggroup Жыл бұрын
That's a good point. Technically, if you're going to fly out of NJ, then the airport is just a way to do that (you are still passing through). That means the firearm(s) have to be secured properly according to airline regulations so you may wish to contact them beforehand and inquire as to how the firearm should be secured for flight. It also means during travel you have your ticket readily available to prove you are flying out. It probably would not hurt contacting the police department that handles security at the airport beforehand and explain your situation. You can transport your firearms to NJ for qualification but they need to be NJ compliant in order to possess/use them in NJ. People come into NJ to attend shooting ranges, hunting, shooting competition, etc... and as long as the firearm is NJ compliant and transported according to state law (unloaded, ammo separate from firearm, not accessible to driver, etc..) you are ok.

I've been trying to find an answer to this particular question. If I am a resident and licensed and want to go to a range, if I have a range bag with separate compartments for the firearm and mags, can it all be transported in the same bag as long as separated? I have seen set ups where a pistol can be locked in an independent bag/case inside of a range bag that also locks. I want to make sure there's no issue with using 1 bag or if I should purchase 2 separate ones.

Hi , as permit to carry is going through in NJ now. How does this effect carrying in your car with a carry permit? I’d imagine you’re allowed to have it concealed on your person, but can you remove it and put in glove box or console for longer rides for comfort?
@martelltraininggroup
@martelltraininggroup Жыл бұрын
Good question. Some courts are adding restrictions to the carry permits ordering them to not carry in their vehicles (unless unloaded and secured as if you don't have a carry permit). I'm sure these restrictions will be challenged in court. As far as securing your firearm in your vehicle when you travel, there is nothing in statute that I'm aware of. It's up to each permit holder to secure their weapon properly. In most cases, you would keep it secured to your person; however, I know that's not always practical.

There are many restrictions for carrying firearms in NJ as well as travelling through NJ (from another state). Without a permit to carry a handgun, you are limited to where you can travel with your firearms. Here are the exemptions under N.J.S.2C:39-6: e. Nothing in subsections b., c., and d. of N.J.S.2C:39-5 shall be construed to prevent a person keeping or carrying about the person's place of business, residence, premises or other land owned or possessed by the person, any firearm, or from carrying the same, in the manner specified in subsection g. of this section, from any place of purchase to the person's residence or place of business, between the person's dwelling and place of business, between one place of business or residence and another when moving, or between the person's dwelling or place of business and place where the firearms are repaired, for the purpose of repair. For the purposes of this section, a place of business shall be deemed to be a fixed location. f. Nothing in subsections b., c., and d. of N.J.S.2C:39-5 shall be construed to prevent: (1) A member of any rifle or pistol club organized in accordance with the rules prescribed by the National Board for the Promotion of Rifle Practice, in going to or from a place of target practice, carrying firearms necessary for target practice, provided that the club has filed a copy of its charter with the superintendent and annually submits a list of its members to the superintendent and provided further that the firearms are carried in the manner specified in subsection g. of this section; (2) A person carrying a firearm or knife in the woods or fields or upon the waters of this State for the purpose of hunting, target practice or fishing, provided that the firearm or knife is legal and appropriate for hunting or fishing purposes in this State and the person has in the person's possession a valid hunting license, or, with respect to fresh water fishing, a valid fishing license; (3) A person transporting any firearm or knife while traveling: (a) Directly to or from any place for the purpose of hunting or fishing, provided the person has in the person's possession a valid hunting or fishing license; or (b) Directly to or from any target range, or other authorized place for the purpose of practice, match, target, trap or skeet shooting exhibitions, provided in all cases that during the course of the travel all firearms are carried in the manner specified in subsection g. of this section and the person has complied with all the provisions and requirements of Title 23 of the Revised Statutes and any amendments thereto and all rules and regulations promulgated thereunder; or (c) In the case of a firearm, directly to or from any exhibition or display of firearms which is sponsored by any law enforcement agency, any rifle or pistol club, or any firearms collectors club, for the purpose of displaying the firearms to the public or to the members of the organization or club, provided, however, that not less than 30 days prior to the exhibition or display, notice of the exhibition or display shall be given to the Superintendent of the State Police by the sponsoring organization or club, and the sponsor has complied with any reasonable safety regulations the superintendent may promulgate. Any firearms transported pursuant to this section shall be transported in the manner specified in subsection g. of this section; (4) A person from keeping or carrying about a private or commercial aircraft or any boat, or from transporting to or from the aircraft or boat for the purpose of installation or repair of a visual distress signaling device approved by the United States Coast Guard. g. Any weapon being transported under paragraph (2) of subsection b., subsection e., or paragraph (1) or (3) of subsection f. of this section shall be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported, and in the course of travel shall include only deviations as are reasonably necessary under the circumstances.

What is the law on transporting multiple firearms and ammo in your vehicle when you have a NJ Permit to Carry? I shoot IDPA competitions and bring 2 guns and a couple hundred rounds of ammo to a typical match. Since I have my carry permit, I can (for now) carry one gun on me with a loaded mag or two. How should I handle my additional guns and ammo when transporting in my car to a match? Do I still need to separate the gun and lock up my ammo, or can I just leave them in my range bag (guns and ammo together) unlocked in the trunk while I am driving to the match? Since I am able to carry a gun on my person it does not make much sense to lock up the others, but this is NJ and nothing about our gun laws makes much sense. Thanks
@martelltraininggroup
@martelltraininggroup Жыл бұрын
Locking unloaded guns up applies when you need to leave them in your car not under your immediate control (You have to go somewhere you can't have a gun, for example). You're fine to have multiple guns unloaded in a gun/range bag to take to the range and have your every day carry on you if you have a permit to carry.

But as you mentioned, NY does not recognize NJ's concealed carry permits so I'd say they will most likely take action if you use your gun -doesn't make much sense if you are defending yourself but I would expect them to do so. However, you can always look into applying for a NY carry permit. I believe they issue if you are a part-time resident or work in NY. Probably cost more than NJ's but if you travel to NY a lot it may be worth it.

If NJ is your destination, the firearm(s) must be legal to own/possess in NJ. If just passing through NJ, you can do so with any firearm (if legally acquired in your home state) so long as they are secured as described below: Firearms shall be carried unloaded and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the automobile in which it is being transported. If the vehicle does not have a compartment separate from the passenger compartment, the firearm and or ammunition shall be in a locked container other than the vehicle's glove compartment or center console and kept farthest from the driver.
