Wild camping and hiking the Tranter Round, climbing 18 Munros, hiking 80km over the course of 3 full days and 2 half days. We hiked anti clockwise, making Ben Nevis the last Munro.
The Tranter Round is normally completed by ultrarunners in under 24 hours. Neither Liam nor myself are runners, so we decided to hike the Tranter Round and wild camped along the way. We started and finished at Fort William train station (the Tranter Round officially start and finishes at Glen Nevis Youth Hostel). We originally planned to hike even longer with a detour to Loch Treig, but decided against the detour as the itinerary was already challenging.
I mistakenly quoted 19 Munros in the video. One of the summits - Sgor an Iubhair (999m) was a Munro but has been removed from the list of Munros, and is just a Munro top. This means we climbed 18 Munros on this hiking and wild camping trip.
We climbed 6700m, and walked 81km in total. This was one of the most physically demanding hikes for me yet. I can't understand the physical fitness needed to run the entire route in under 24 hours.
Timestamps broken down by each day on the Tranter Round
00:00 Route and intro
01:31 Day 1 - FW to Camp
03:54 Day 2 - Mamores Ridge
11:50 Day 3 - Up and Down
19:19 Day 4 - Grey Corries, Aonachs, CMD, Ben Nevis
28:01 Day 5 - Camp to FW

Day 1: Left Fort William train station after midday, and started the hike. The terrain was an easy fire road to begin with, but we soon turned off and started climbing up Mullach nan Coirean (939m). Ended the day and camped just slightly further along the ridge. 15km and 1100m gained.
Day 2: Headed along the ridge and climbed Stob Bàn (999 m), Sgurr a’ Mhàim (1099 m), Am Bodach (1032 m), Stob Coire a’ Chàirn (981 m), An Gearanach (982 m), Na Gruagaichean (1056 m), Binnein Mòr (1130 m) - thereby completing the 'Ring of Steall'. Camped at the Lochan near Binnein Beag. 17.5km and 1900m gained.
Day 3: Climbed Binnein Beag (943 m) without backpacks, before heading back down to pack up our tents and pick up our gear. Then climbed Sgurr Eilde Mòr and thus completing the Mamores Munros, and descended towards the Waters of Nevis. We did not continue towards Loch Treig as originally planned, and climbed Stob Ban (977m) from Lairig Leacach. We camped at a Lochan West of Stob Ban - very windy night. 20.5km and 1550m gained.
Day 4: Another big day on the ridge. We climbed Stob Choire Claurigh (1177m), Stob Coire an Laoigh (1116m), Sgurr Choinnich Mor (1094m), Aonach Beag (1234m), Aonach Mòr (1221m) before descending down and then climbing Càrn Mòr Dearg (1,220 m) from the East. We climbed the final Munro - Ben Nevis (1,345m) from the Eastern side, via Càrn Mòr Dearg Arête (CMD Arete). Descended down partially in the darkness to camp near Lochan Meall An T-suidhe. 21km and 2150m gained.
Day 5: Descended down from Ben Nevis, and walked back to Fort William train station. 8km and 50m gained.

Good effort, takes some resolve to keep battling on when the weather is fighting you all the way. The view of Ben Nevis from Carn Mor Dearg was simply epic.

I’m very much enjoying your content - no over the top extravagance but down to earth commentary and excellent adventures. You’ve also sold me on the Lanshan 1 (however I did go for the larger 2021 double skin rather than the pro) - to be honest I’ve been using an expensive Tarptent Scarp 1 for the past couple of years, but I’m very keen to drop almost 1kg of weight as I’m always carrying a fair amount of photography gear, the Scarp does also take up a fair amount of space, I’ll probably just use that now as a dedicated deep winter season tent. Again thanks for the content.

No worries Ash, thank you. I think the larger double skin is a good choice for the UK. I tend to pitch the Lanshan 1 Pro with the doors up to combat condensation

Incredible views Richard! Very cool place indeed. Quick question, how you like the Lanshan Pro vs the regular Lanshan so far? Any real advantage to silnylon vs silpoly especially in these kind of conditions?
@RichardCheng
@RichardCheng 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alex. I prefer the Pro to the regular Lanshan for its size. I’ve not been able to tell performance differences in real life - both are excellent in my experience

Yep, not a deal breaker for me, just need a bit of additional tensioning to sort it out. Often when it rains overnight I stay in the tent with no issues

a superb & challenging route you picked there.. shame about the views on the tops but at least you finished with a stunner. i'm guessing it's too early to have a decision on the carbon poles but any problems with the clamps.. are they plastic? thanks for a great video
@RichardCheng
@RichardCheng 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The trekking poles have been fantastic so far, they don’t have any clamps - held by titanium sections and elastic that runs through. Brilliantly held the Lanshan up too through the windy night
