But why? Beavers are keystone species, meaning they have disproportionately large effects on their environments relative to their abundance. They improve hydrologic conditions. Their dams filter out pollutants and create habitat for small animals. Their dams also protect wetlands by reducing erosion. Erosion is a problem because less ground cover causes more pollutants to reach sources of water, since there aren’t plants to absorb them. Wetlands in particular are incredibly important to preserve in the case of flooding because they serve as natural buffers. P.S. I’m an environmental science major.
