Hi, Frederick. Some improvements. 1. Use a wider rimmed bowl or a bowl with a thicker rim that won't allow the giants to hang on to the edge. 2. Coat the upper edge of the bowl with cooking oil. so that both yellow jackets and giants will more easily slip into the water. 3. Don't use water at all, just use cooking oil. Sprinkle a few ounces of ground chicken or other meat on top of the oil. 4. Using oil or soapy water, cover the bowl of liquid with a board with a meat style cat or dog food slathered on the side facing the liquid. Both yellow jackets and giants are carnivores. Leave enough space under the board for the giants to go under and bite the food. Both yellow jackets and giants will try to fly away. They will collide with the liquid. Thanks for sharing! These are vicious little creatures. I was pruning some dead flowers stems from several flower bushes I have on my yard. I was unaware these little creatures would build their nest at ground level. I always thought if anything, their nests would be hanging from a branch on a tree nearby. My mistake. I stepped on one nest. They are vicious. The attack was instantaneous. They followed me into my home as a run for my life... I had several attached to my shirt, shorts, and socks and they kept stinging me until I was able to remove my clothes. In less than 30 seconds, I was covered by them, and was stung over 50 times. Not a fun experience. If you don't know what you are doing on your yard, stay away. That is my advice.

I developed a prejudice against yellowjackets in my youth in Pgh., Pa. From the age of about 9 I had to mow our large yard, which had about a dozen old apple trees and cherry trees, and four seckel pear trees. Fruit on the ground. Yellowjackets on the ground. A dicey place to be mowing a lawn using a walk-behind mower. I was so happy when my dad got a riding mower. I never got stung using it.

I like when science is used at home. Using detergent to decrease surface tension is a beauty in simplicity case to me.

Hi, I live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. I find a more proactive approach in the spring helps a lot. In early spring, the only yellow jackets you'll see are queens that have newly emerged from their overwintering (at least that's the way it is here in the mountains; in much warmer areas, it's possible for a colony to overwinter). Their first priority is to feed and look for a nest location. Here, this happens in April and early May. By mid-June, they've established their nests and have produced and reared enough brood so that they can remain in the nest. So the time to act is before that happens. I fill a spray bottle with isopropyl alcohol and a good shot of Dawn dish detergent. When I see the queens feeding (barberry blooms are one of their favorites) or hovering around my porch or eaves (looking for either a nest location or prey), I spray them with a stream of the alcohol solution, being sure to coat their body with it. I suspect this prevents air intake via their spiracles (air intake pores), and they fall to the ground and die. (You'll see them flexing their abdomen in order to respirate.) You just have to make sure you hit them 2 or 3 times in repetition to get a good coating. (Don't worry, I've never had a queen attack me doing this; their first reaction is to escape/vacate the area, in order to preserve the ability to produce a new colony.) I have killed up to 30 queens some springs. This helps to keep the yellow jacket population in the vicinity down to tolerable levels so that they are not so obnoxious. If you estimate each queen could result in a colony of 200-500 yellow jackets or more, killing 30 queens is eliminating 6,000 to 15,000 eventual yellow jackets. Don't get me wrong, yellow jackets are beneficial in curbing the bug/pest population. But they tend to get out of control. So the above approach helps tamp down the population. But it's like digging a hole in the sand at the beach. It will fill back in without vigilance. I have done this for a number of years each spring and seen tangible good results, without the use of toxic pesticides. We have both Southern and German yellow jackets here.

Our town has a problem with yellow jackets this year, I've been attacked every single time I've left the house at least once. This was good to watch

if you cut a large hole in a lid it creates a lip ring around the edge and they have to fly in or walk in upside down to get at the feed increasing the chance they slip up.

great advice. with the loss of honey bees, and trying to stay away from insecticides, i added anise hysop to lure them back to our gardens but what was lured in are seriously aggressive yellow jackets. i got stung 4 times simultaneously (on my chest - with no shirt) last summer; walked up on a nest i didn’t know was there. (certain mumbled profanities are omitted from my post at this point...) i’m glad you added the vinegar to ward off honey bees, what a great thought. this should help very much in 2019. thanks alot for sharing!

Your method and other open-feeding methods like, with meat, are so much better that those plastic store-bought ones, and less expensive too. I regularly catch 200 or more per day using a chicken bone with a little meat on it.

I noticed the same kind of insects flying around in my yard, in France, and me not being particularly versed in beekeeping, this will help me a lot to "clean out" my garden because i've noticed that the bushes that both these yellow jackets and hornets visit are deserted by bees. Thank you for this interesting tip. I have used another formula this last Spring (Sardinia-Italy) to catch the queens at their first flight, so to avoid them building more colonies, but the formula attracted also the butterflies and his is no good. I certainly try this one and see if it works here. In fact, in my experience, I found out that insects, which are not at all stupid as someone can think, have indeed different tastes, probably depending on different food they find in different areas of the world. in the rest of Italy they are fond of beer and sugar and this formula attracts them perfectly. In Sardinia it simply does not work because they are fond of spiced red wine. Alas, butterflies seem to like it very much as well. Wretched wasps do love my grapes in the vineyard. I need getting rid of most of them, also because I am planning to start beekeeping and I don't want them around. I will try this formula immediately! Btw the trap I used is called TapTrap and is a very simple but effective one. I will try both traps with same formula to see which works better. Thank you!

I had a wasps (England), yellow jackets (US) in my garden last year. Honestly, they were no problem. They took out a lot of garden pests. But I understand the concerns from parents with kids. The Asian hornet is still rare in England, which we need to control to keep our honey bees safe. Thanks for the tips on how to control these species. 👍

This works to trap fruit flies in your house as well, though apple cider vinegar diluted in water with a drop or two of Dawn is all it takes.

Good one. You might like to try placing a board about 10cm wide across the top of the bowl, with fish or other yummy wasp bait on the underside. Wasps will land on top, walk under to eat their fill, then as they dip down to take off, they go for their last life's adventure.

One year I bought yellow jacket traps and baited them with beef liver. I set out 10 traps. They were full every evening for 3 solid weeks. I was told that I possibly attracted all the yellow jackets within a 2 mile radius. I havent seen another yellow jacket at my house in the last 8 years.

Thanks man I have a pear tree wasps are attracted to this year, and I've tried using chicken, pineapple juice, haven't worked as well as the apple juice. Don't even need to set up a bottle trap and this is the most effective method. Today I've noticed these giant european hornets with red heads, one got caught. It is much bigger than a black hornet.

I used a method to get rid of some very nasty ants (a technique which I learned from a nearby monastery, since they used it but for wasps so that their bees could be safe), which is basically taking some boric acid, mixing it with sugar and water, and leaving it around their trails. It takes a while to kill workers, that way they can take the substance back to the nest, feed it to the queen, and bam! Dead colony! The monastery used a mixture of meat+boric acid, which has a similar effect as the mixture that I made.

That was a beautiful sight!

Glen Echo use to put half filled orange soda bottles with no lids on them, on the picnic table throughout the park. The sweet smell would attract wasps who would go in through the dime width opening only to find they could not fly out. Eventually they drop into the soda and drown. There were all these signs that said, "Don't drink the orange soda".

I do the same thing for fruit flies, but with a bottle neck. I put Saran Wrap over the opening and poke a hole through the center. They climb in, but never out.

We used to do something similar in Boy Scouts at summer camp, we'd use a large can, pour some syrup into it, about an inch deep, then get a small stick, and string. And some sort of meat for bait. Suspending the bait about half an inch above the syrup. The wasp has to go down before going up to fly away. But instead of flying away, they would get stuck in the syrup. It was a good idea to put the trap away from eating areas and the tents

Right now I’m on a journey as we had European hornets move in 2 days ago in our oak tree. I certainly love your concept.. I have had wonderful results using boric acid for mice and rats. I’m pondering using it in the mix....I’m going to give it a try. Also getting a mix of canola oil and dawn/fabuloso to spray the outside bark. I had them in my BBQ shed and painted it with used motor oil in the Fall and they haven’t bothered it since nor been back but I’m not putting that on my live oak tree. Could’ve used this video last summer. Bees had an abandoned hideout abound my door, and would mobilize every time I took out my dogs. I used 2 soap bottles and some foam. The battle was legendary.

I use 64 ounce plastic juice bottles. I drill a 3/4 inch hole in the side at the top of the flat side just below the curve of the neck. I leave the top on the bottle. Then add the bait- a cup of sugar, a cup of water, a cup of apple cider vinegar, pieces of banana peel and a slice of an apple. I hang them near my beehives. Over the summer I caught wax moths, wasps, hornets, horse flies, house flies, and a few hive beetles. I emptied them once a week and add new bait. For the last two weeks they have been filling up with yellow jackets to the point where the yellow jackets overwhelmed the juice bottle traps. So I now just do the same with gallon size milk bottles and let them sit on the ground. I never had any bees enter the traps.

I have noticed a big overabundance of yellow jackets also and have been looking for a good way to kill them off. Thank you for your timely video and instructions. There seem to be a lot more grasshoppers than usual also but at least they don't Sting.

I used to do this with fruit flies in my old apartment. I would just use this mixture exactly and a small glass container, plastic wrap over it and poke holes in it. I'd set one in the kitchen and bathroom because my downstairs neighbor had so much trash it was overflowing off her patio and infesting my unit as well.

I accidentally found a similar method....I accidentally left a bottle of flavored vodka spritzer out in the yard, half drunk...next day I found 3 inches of bees in the bottle....from then on I used to plant half bottles of the stuff around the yard....the shape of the bottle seemed to make escape difficult....worked great...in future I will add dishwashing soap...thanks

One way u can catch a lot of fleas, is similar to this... u put a bowl of water with a little dawn dish soap on the floor with a lamp shining down onto the bowl, with the other lights all off. And the fleas jump into the bowl and drown
