This is so interesting! I'd never heard if Trappist monks before, but it looks a wonderful life with all the prayers, working the land and being close to nature! It would be easy to spend years just in their library. I've so much respect for their vocation. It's reassuring that people can still be in such close proximity to God in today's chaos. Blessings to all. 🙏

Altruism is the core value of Christianity but nowadays, many so-called Christians only think about going to Heaven after death and that's it. If all Christians turned their focus on God like Trappists, their spiritual life would be very different and so would the world be. As a Protestant, I think it is a missing piece of puzzle that Protestants lack. Highly appreciated!
@EternalDestiny48
@EternalDestiny48 3 жыл бұрын
I understand where you're coming from but do not forget that Protestants are and have been occupied with spreading the gospel like no other group in history. Now the fact that not all Christians participate in this calling is an issue but certainly there is a group of Protestants who are willing to go overseas and spread the gospel in unfriendly zones

There are no monasteries near me, but i (and many others) find that quiet place in keeping and caring for a garden, in the truest sense of a garden. Full of life of all kinds, peaceful, thriving, full of beauty and rest for the mind. Yes, my garden and i together have learned the secret of how to stop time, as Thomas Merton says of spiritual practice.

I’ve never been to Mepkin Abbey. But I live not far from St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts. I spent time there in 2000 while I was trying to sort out a difficult time in my life. The monks were wonderfully supportive in that I stayed away from most of them, and those we were available to us who were there as retreatants were understanding as to why most of us were there. I’d go back if the opportunity were to present itself.

thankyou for opening up monastic life in the beautiful trappist way. many are trapped in the thingdom of the world and could learn to stop to time and enter the heart of God by taking on some of the kernel precepts of the trappist way. to live the monastic life outside a monastery is the challenge for the multitudes; the narrow path is not the easy path, but it is the way of perfection; let us pray for each other as the Lord asks of us to do, that we may build each other up in Christ. Beautiful film.

If Christ's way is a philosophy I can assure you there is no hope for humanity. Don't you know that all philosophy is based on the human intellect. How on Earth is the human intellect supposed to take us from this worldly realm to the realm of God? Jesus was not a mere philosopher but a mystic, a human being in union with God and filled with the mind of God. Therefore he knew the Truth and did not develop philosophical theories.

@Deperuse

@@OperationsAndSmoothProductions The Gospel cannot be interpreted in several correct ways. There is only one correct way and the Divine Tradition of the Catholic Church is the only place that has this one way. (Church Fathers, Apostolic Tradition). What you mentioned is subjectivism, which is not good and leaves room for much error. Divine Truth is objective and unchanging. We submit ourselves to the Truth, not picking and choosing which parts we like and don't like. God is objective; The Truth is objective and we cannot do anything about it but submit ourselves. Which is actually the best thing we can do, it's beautiful.

@@Deperuse With regards to my statement "The way of Chriist....", the initial principals and structor of the way IS the only way. I.e. a metaphysical ideal (untochable or tainted by man) which we must follw but can never attain. Also the idea of forgiveness of sins to all those who remain on the path IS the only way to avoid tyranny and a debased society. It is the perfect match and preportion of mind and matter. DIVINE and eternal because ALL societys which adopt this way through time will live in harmony and know life.

Increasingly, we find that renewal in the church today begins by each person beginning a 'sacred space' of daily meditation on the scriptures with obedience and self-examination. If you really desire God's presence, grab a couple of people in your church and pick, maybe the gospel of John and pray just one chapter a week, a line a day, asking God to speak for 15-30 minutes a day. Meet once a week in prayer and share what God is bringing to you, virtually if necessary.

Only one Trappist monastery in the US was permitted to brew it, St Joseph's Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts. They brewed a wicked good one, but sadly it ceased production in 2022. I guess competition became too fierce in a region where there's practically a small batch brewery on every block, and they didn't want to invest more in advertising.

@@williamjameslehy1341 There exist also Abbey beers which are lesser interesting and triple beers which are often equal to the Trappist beers. Greetings from Antwerp-Belgium where it is 2.37 in the morning !

Wow! Just wow! Wonder how many monks have taken the Myers Briggs test and how they score....if there is a predominant personality type..... Vegetarianism, in some instances, has been recommended when folks may have too much of a sex drive, since meat may be stimulating.....so no extra hormones from meats.... Very industrious community....love the way they take care of their elderly..... Would also like to know where they get their empty tea bags for their Earth Healer compost tea.....

If young people were guided and trained in a similar way, from about age 14, until their eaely 20s, we would produce happy, respectful, productive populations, of well rounded human beings, fit to raise families, and take on responsibility.

Never marry and never have children is a deal-breaker for me, but that would also be a very good contemplative and growth-filled life. I'm intrigued by these type of communities, similar Amish and those other types of 'self-sustaining' communities.
