A lot of the information out there about where to stay in South Korea is outdated! Many people think they should stay in Myeongdong but that information isn't accurate for everyone. The answer depends on what your travel style is!
In this video I breakdown the different cities you can stay in and give them scores based on the following categories: where is the best nightlife, where is the best shopping, average cost in each area, best location to go to all of the tourist sights, where would you feel most comfortable as a foreigner, where is it easy to live without speaking Korean, where is the safest place to live in Seoul and where to stay if you're on a budget!

If you HAVE lived in Korea for any period of time, I’d love to hear where you stayed and what your experience was like! Outskirts breakdown: First circle - I love the areas surrounding Hongdae! So anywhere inside the black circle would be great! Inside that yellow square is where the major partying happens so understand it will be loud around there. Outside of that yellow area are some of my favorite spots I’ve ever lived in - like near Hapjeong and Mangwon station! People in these areas are also a little older but still SO many cute cafes to explore~ Arrow - Sindorim is a great station to live near because the subway station is the intersection of the green and blue line. These subway lines are the two major lines so they can take you anywhere! It’s often very cheap to live around here but make sure you live very close to the subway station (walking distance) if you’re going to stay around here (roads get complex and sometimes very hilly around here). The arrow continues to point down the green line (line 2). The green line is the best line to live off of because it makes a big circle throughout the city of Seoul. I’ve lived in this area before and, though it’s an older crowd, it’s very cheap to live down here as well and very relaxed. You’ll have more of an authentic Korean experience in this area for sure! Second circle - A cheaper option if you’re looking to do lots of the tourist sights! It’s not Myeongdong but you’re not far and I prefer to stay over this way in comparison to towards Seoul Station. I really don’t recommend living near Seoul Station (if you really want to know why - message me on Instagram). Hope this helps ☺❤✨

I am living in Seongnam and the plaza subway station is very convenient. It has cafes, restaurants, beauty stores, daiso, olive young, karaoke rooms, dance studio, gyms, convenience stores, bakeries, seafood places and grocery stores. It also has cute stores like artbox, phone accessory stores. It has a 20s and older crowd. I often see teens though. There is a kids cafe too. But the restaurants nearby to me are traditional and have good side dishes and not too many foreigners but people aren't shocked by our presence

Hello, awesome review! We went on a holiday to Seoul 6 years ago and stayed in the "outskirts" - was completely fine and quite convenient, BUT communiting was taking a bit of time. We are going for the second time to Korea in a week and this time we will stay fir in Myeongdong and than in Itaewon, just to be centrally located. We wanted to stay in Hongdae, but airbnb options there were not that great. :( But we will visit the area for sure!

I stayed in Seocho-gu at the JW Marriot for business for the three years I bounced back and forth there. I've been to the other areas you mentioned. Safety was not an issue. I was told Korean only two times a one spot in Itaewon and twice in Gangnam.. My coworker was rejected at a few spots in Hongdae. Different experience.

Just wanted to say thank you so much for putting this video together! I’m visiting Korea for the first time and wanted to know all these knitty gritty details like what to pack, where to stay, how to get around, etc. I’m so happy to Find your channel! I’ve traveled to lots of different places, but I know every place can be different. I really like how you broke down the locations by category so I could find out which location fits best for me, especially how you scored Myeongdeong post pandemic too, and I feel a lot less nervous about my choice now 🥰 Everything was easy to understand and so helpful! Thank you again!

This is honestly one of the best break-down and where-to-stay researches I've ever listened. Very little bias, lots of facts and you always consider that different people have different tastes/preferences and rated the places in different aspects which makes it as subjective as it gets. Great job and thank you.

Randomly found you! Hey Miss Megan, I always hoped there was a video that would break down bits and pieces of staying (may buddha's will assist me in living there) in Seoul without assumption that I should know this and that when I was never there. I have done much research in the past yr and half, but nothing matches one's experience in actually gone through it. I noticed how you even mentioned a SIM card in the descriptions ( had come across that many researches ago) and I think all the detailed steps would benefit a long way and make much of the unknown easier for those of us who have never been there and also first time leaving the country in 30 years (Cancún doesn't count for me, hahaha).. So, I just subscribed and be watching more for much needed (additional) info to move forward in doing the prep work for a trip to KR (Feb. 2023, fingers crossed!) .... I always have million questions about everything, but I am sure by watching more of your contents I should get answers for some if not all_ Thank you kindly! M_^()^

For those curious about another perspective I'm living in "the outskirts" as Megan puts it. I'm in Dongdaemun-gu (close to Anam station) because I'm a student that's attending a nearby school. And it's definitely not the picturesque scene people envision Korea from the dramas. There's local family restaurants, occasional run down buildings, and not much "Blend" (unless I'm on the main-street near Korea University). But being in a living situation like this makes the experience here feel more "realistic" and it's nice to be kinda forced to use my Korean more. And in my personal opinion, as someone who lived in Gangnam for a couple months, near the stations, main road (Gangnam dero) and in the underground subway areas, there tends to places that have more "Ease"... but the moment you go into the side streets, many of the places don't have English menus. Regardless, if you have an image translator and know some basic phrases, it'll help out a lot. And I don't like Itaewon either lol. So many creepy foreigner/Korean dudes at the clubs/bars.

I lived there during 5 months and I totally agree with you! The food was cheaper than in hype areas like Hongdae or Itaewon and I liked to go eat at local small restaurants rather than more expensive ones or fastfood chains. The small business owners are super friendly and always encouraging when you try to speak Korean (some even tried to teach me Korean). I will go back for one month and will live in Hongdae this time but I am definitely gonna visit again these small restaurants and cafés around Korea University because I miss them 😊 I even became friends with some of the owners even though they could not speak English at all. We would just talk using applications to translate sometimes but it wasn't a problem

It took a bit to answer the 1st question but I sent it late Friday and first thing Monday they got back to me. I’m staying in Hongdae, a little outside but that’s because it’s where my kids live that I’m visiting and I want them to keep their routine. I’m staying at a guest house to save$$$$.

Great video! I lived in Seoul 10 years ago, and chuckled at your Itaewon ratings. “Nightlife is good if you can find a wall.” 🤣 I’ll be visiting soon and wonder about nightlife options for late 30’s people. I was in my 20’s living it up in Hongdae, Gangnam, and Itaewon. Any places for older people that play hip hop or pop music (rather than EDM), or should I prepare my pajamas?

Nice!! Liked how the video turned out! 😁😊 I really like the Hongdae area as well because it’s only a station away from Sinchon right next to Yonsei University, so a college area with cheap prices but less people in a wider area, and I’m all about open space where people aren’t breathing down my neck 😂

Quick "outskirts" recommendation! I stayed in Dangsan-dong (outskirt-ish) when I went 3 years ago and have booked the same Airbnb for when I go back later this month. I loved it because it was quiet (for the most part), had great views and access to the Han River, quick access to 2 subway lines, and had plenty of restaurants and stores nearby. I didn't mind taking the subway to more central areas, since I stayed out pretty much all day anyway. I would say you should maybe only stay there if you know some basic Korean though. I think it would have been a bit tough for me if I didn't read Hangul or have basic phrases/words down for the two weeks I was there.

I was in Jung-Gu (southwest-ish of Dongdaemun) when I was in Seoul, so kinda outskirt-ish but overall I was the only foreigner in the Airbnb. There were mostly apartment buildings where presumably families lived in & it was pretty dark at night which did make me feel a bit uncomfortable walking alone even as an adult male. I did have a hard time with the language as there were mostly older people around. I could read enough Hangul to know where I was going and knew where things were in the general area including the line 3 subway & bus stop. There was nothing really there apart from convenience stores so getting to a restaurant was a trek.

Excellent video and good job on mentioning the places in South Korea Megan, Sorry to hear about those people who inappropriately touched you during the nightlife in Itaewon, they are idiots and have no right to do that to you plus it's so cool that they make foreign food from around the world in those restaurants and cafes and fast food etc. and I did not expect that to happen to you. Hey Megan, I love your videos. Yeah most articles will suggest Myeongdong or Hongdae as a base to stay for tourists. I'm surprised that Dongdaemun didn't get on the list, I rate the area as Blend (3.5 lots of tourists but mostly Asian) Ease (3) Nightlife (2) Location (3.5) Shopping (4 cheaper & more options than Myeongdong) Average cost ($) Safety (4).

Thanks for your rating addition! I don’t mind Dongdaemun but I’m not as experienced there so I didn’t want to give the ratings - so I really appreciate you saying this!

I thought about Airnb, but the plus side of the hotels is that you can book a room without prepayment and you can cancel for free, of course free cancellation is also in Airnb, but I found a hotel at a very good price which is comparable to Airnb

First time I went to Korea (2019) and ALONE I stayed in Hongdae area near Sangsu Station and I loved it because I had low budged to stay for 25 days....Definetly Hongdae is the cheapest to buy skincare than Myeongdong lol. And street foods. I had difficulties of finding some traditional meals like Japchae. Maybe I didnt had any difficulties cause local friends helped me a lot. Next year I'll go again and spend more time and will check MAPO area first....at least one of the cheapest hostel lol. But planning also to visit other cities so including KTX on my expenses lol....

This video was so helpful! i'm planning my first trip to Korea in November as a solo woman and the thing i'm struggling the most with is where to stay! So many pros and cons to weigh up. I like buzzy nightlife but i'm not into clubbing.. i'm nearly 40 so maybe I would stick out in Hongdae lol. Myeongdong sounds central but other than that, meh. Gangnam, definitely not.

Hi. Love your videos. I am middle age, speak some Korean, love to do some touristy things, enjoy lots of Korean food, and have 1 week vacation. Plan for Seoul, Pusan, and Jaeju. Maybe 2-3 days in each location. Where can I stay (hotel/Airbnb) with a good transportation, and how to book events??

Thank you for the video, I listened to several similiar videos and this one is by far the best. So good that my wife actually listens to you. We are going to Korea for about a month, starting tomorrow. I actually have a question: my wife is a doctor, I have my own business. We both rely on video calls. The quality of that has to be top notch. Have you had any bad experience with internet? any mobile networks that you recommend?

Hello, im korean. Korea's Internet speed is the highest in the world. There are three main mobile networks in Korea: SK Telecom, LG U+, and KT. All three carriers have the highest speed, but if you use free Wi-Fi on public transportation, SK Telecom's Wi-Fi network is the most installed and works well. I hope you enjoy your trip to Korea!

Coming back from a 2 weeks trip to Seoul I must say that Itaewon was the least exciting place of the city and Gangnam is far overrated. Myeong-dong is pretty cool, as well as the Lotte Tower Region, but the best is Hongdae and Insadong…so many cool and nice people there! The Namsan Tower as well! Love this city! Definitely worth the trip! 🇰🇷👍🏻🍀

I went to Korea last August after 10 years of my first Korea trip, and I had no idea and chose to stay in Myeongdong. I really regretted that decision.....Here's why: Firstly, I came to Seoul for K-POP contents so mostly the venues are at Hongdae. And Myeongdong to Hongdae is a mere messed...I had to walk a long path in the train station to change terminal to Hongdae, although the train was around 20mins, but you had to walk a long path in the train station (underground train stations have no air-conditioning). And since there are a lot of events at Hongdae, I went there for 4x during my whole 7 days trip, so it was tiring. My Korean friend advised me to stay in Hongdae or Mangwon-dong since the K-POP related venues will be around them! So, in my next trip which is in this summer, I would choose Mangwon-dong to stay during my trip!

I’d also recommend Konkuk area. It’s like a lesser known version of Hongdae. However, you’ll stick out like a sore thumb because not many foreigners go there. Also, Jungro area. If you want nice restaurants with a traditional vibe and nice coffee shops, it’s the place to be.
