Konya is one of the most religious cities in Türkiye. Join me in exploring its history. Learn about Rumi, the whirling dervishes, and more!
Shot on: December 30, 2023
Location: Konya, Türkiye
Thanks for watching! I'm launching a new travel vlog every week, so stay tuned. Travel Lord On Location is a new channel, so please SUBSCRIBE and turn on NOTIFICATIONS if you enjoy my content and want to see my travel adventures.
About this Konya vlog:
You can find the whirling dervish ceremony performed in many cities around Türkiye, but it originates in Konya. That’s why I had to go to Konya to see it, along with Rumi’s tomb. Konya is a unique city from other cities I’ve been to. In this Konya travel vlog, we get to see:
-Alaaddin Hill Park (Alaadin Tepe)
-Bedesten Bazaar
-Mevlana Museum
-Tilavat Chamber
-Mevlana Square
-Mevlana Cultural Center
-Sultan Selim Mosque
We also learn a lot about Sufi Islam or Sufism. In this vlog, I watch a Whirling Dervish Ceremony, also called a sema ceremony, and see centuries-old copies of Masnavi and the Quran. In one part, I cut back to Istanbul, Türkiye, to get a Turkish coffee on the street. But don’t worry! I also try some of the local Konya cuisine and eat an Etliekmek (as well as the Mevlana, another variation of an Etliekmek).
Enjoy this tour of Konya, Türkiye!
About the poet Rumi:
Rumi, a 13th-century Persian poet, theologian, and mystic, is renowned for his spiritual and philosophical poetry that transcends time and culture. His profound teachings on love, unity, and the nature of existence resonate with people worldwide. Central to Rumi's philosophy is the concept of "whirling" as a metaphor for the soul's journey towards divine love.
The whirling dervishes, also known as the Mevlevi Order, are not just followers, but devotees of Rumi's teachings who engage in the sacred Sama ceremony. The Sama is not just a mesmerizing ritual, but a deeply spiritual experience where the dervishes, clad in white robes with tall hats, spin in a trance-like state, symbolizing a spiritual journey towards God. The spinning represents not just the planets revolving around the sun, but the whirling of the universe, and the surrender of the ego to the divine, making it a profound spiritual journey.
Through their whirling, the dervishes don't just seek, but they strive to transcend their physical existence, achieve spiritual union with the divine, and experience a state of ecstatic bliss. The Sama ceremony is not just a performance but a deeply transformative spiritual practice that embodies Rumi's teachings of love, tolerance, and spiritual enlightenment, leaving a lasting impact on the dervishes and their spiritual journey.
Today, witnessing the whirling dervishes in places like Konya, Turkey, where Rumi's tomb is located, offers a profound and mesmerizing glimpse into Rumi's mystical world and the enduring legacy of his spiritual teachings.
About Konya, Türkiye,
Konya is steeped in history and spirituality. It is most famous as the final resting place of the renowned Sufi mystic Rumi, whose mausoleum, the Mevlana Museum, is a significant pilgrimage site for Sufi followers and tourists. Konya was also the capital of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum, and remnants of its glorious past can be seen in historical sites such as the Alaeddin Mosque and the impressive Seljuk Palace complex.

Although culturally important, konya is boring because it is one of the most conservative cities in Turkey, i would recommend checking the black sea region if you want to see more natural beauty covered with lush green mountains and forests, and if you want a more coastal and fun experience, you could check out the agean/mediterranian cities, since you already checked out izmir, bodrum and antalya, you could check out the less known cities in those regions such as Çanakkale or Mersin, both very cosmopolitan and great places, you would definetely have fun, i would also recommend going to side if you havent already.
