These are the travel palettes I actually use as opposed to all the ones that I own, including what colours I have in them.

you’re supposed to clip that little Etsy pallet right to your little sketchbook. So it’s right next to where you’re painting. That’s what that little divot in there is for. I love those. I actually sit by the TV and use them at night painting little paintings just to relax. But they’re great for travel. I used one on an airplane when I was bored one time.

I cover my color guide sheet with clear tape and then tape it to the top of my palettes, instead of having a loose sheet. Works great. If I change looks I just make a new one..

Nice array! I cover my swatch cards with packing tape. It handles the stickies perfectly and is wipeable. I also use a piece of parchment paper cut to size to cover the paints sometimes, or if there's room cut a piece of clear(ish) cutting board sheet from the dollar store. It can double as an extra mixing space.

The Art Tool kit wont stick to the top of the palette when wet if your pans aren't overfilled. I think the paper was simply pushed against it when the lid was closed. I have 2 of them and never have an issue. I also have the portable painter that I use for my gouache. I also have the square wooden one, but I really never use it. I also have a metal one that holds 12 that is well loved. I love to see what other people use. Thanks for sharing!

Good point with regards to the swatch card sticking. I have now put some sticky plastic on the back so hopefully this won't happen in future. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you.

Where do you get the little paper canvases to fit inside that pallet? Or do you just cut your own?

18:30 The long wooden palette has magnets on the sides so you can indeed keep it flat and together without a clip. :-) Thanks for the "show and tell" tour if your palettes.

@@MichelleMouldArtistYou are welcome. It's a design issue -not a user error- issue. It should be obvious to the user (perhaps magnets on both sides?) or there should be some indication in a companion card. Your plastic bag idea is clever...I would probably use an acetate scrap, I could cut out a transparent folder sheet or make laminated card (perhaps with the swatch card). My favourite would be the portable painter classic because it takes standard half pans and I can switch colours as I need. Thanks again!

@@berolinastrassmann I agree. It is useful to be able to put half pans in the portable palette and also easy to change colours.

I use the art toolkit. I have all 3 sizes, but my fave is the larger one. I had M. Graham in it, but had to replace them with Daniel Smith. The honey based pigments just weren't working in such a small format.

Looks like many of agree about the types of paints in travel palettes. I'll see how I go with the art toolkit I have and maybe get the larger one if I like it.

Just laminate your swatch sheet instead of using plastic... you can use the sticky paper if you don't have a laminating machine or tape a plastic bag around. Then use a white backed swatch card and use the opposite side as a mixing palette. :) I did that yesterday actually with the mint type tin.

You might want to laminate your color charts and use them in place of your doggy bag scraps. Also, that last wooden palette has magnets on the side.

I have those Wooden Palettes myself. You can also Laminate your Swatch Sheet and use it as "cover" for your Wet Paint Palette, or just use Packaging Clear Tape to seal your Swatch Sheet. Another thing is use those Clear Plastic Food Containers you get from Restaurants or Groceries; cut them to the palette size accordingly, and use it as "cover seal" for your Wet Paints on your Palette; btw, I leave a little "thumb lip" for easy lift or so to slide off easily should the clear plastic gets stuck on the paints. I use either above for my Gouache Paints in my "Wet Palate" on Portable Palette and those Wooden Palettes, since I really don't want to fully dry the Gouache Paints, just moist enough for next use. Of course, above also works well too with Watercolor paints.

I have Portable Painter, Art Toolkit Pocket palette, a GoDraw mini wood palette (Russian hand made and their mini-sketchbooks have all cotton 300 gsm paper) ... I love all 3! I am only 6 months into watercolor/sketching and did Pleinairpril ... as a very newbie, I was frustrated with my starting kit and adjusted 3x through Pleinairpril until I found what worked for me. Art Toolkit ... I was careful not to overfill. The pans are very shallow. I leveled with a toothpick and when they dried, they shrunk a bit so even after painting I haven't had any sticking issues. As noted in a reply below, I like to sit a bit after painting to wind down, let my painting and palette dry a little before packing up. Not always possible if weather takes a turn for the worse as it did in April (I live in Northwest Montana, US). I love Art Toolkit: items, company story ... they also carry Rosemary & Co travel brushes which I love as well. I bought one of there kits which comes with palette, water brush, ruler, water dropper, moleskine palette ... it also holds the 3 R&C brushes I like to take, some paper towel (kitchen roll), pen, pencil, eraser ... and fits in my handbag and also the small sling pack I take on walks with my dog. I have the goDraw with water brush, pen, pencil, eraser and mini sketchbook in an even smaller zipper container that I owned. It fits in the pocket of a utility vest that wear everywhere in the warmer times. After using 4 zippered containers for all tools for Pleinairpril, I splurged on the Peg and Awl tool roll and it carries my Portable Painter, 4 travel brushes ... and everything else all in 1 roll which also stands up on its own or I hang it from my tripod if I'm using a small folding easel I bought that fits on the tripod (Taylor Seamount on Etsy). This is my kit for a day pack/back pack. All is certainly more than this beginner needs, but although I went through initial frustration in Pleinairpril, ultimately I fell in love with Plein Air as well as being able to do something quick on an errand run or dog walk. I find that I am painting and drawing daily, sometimes multiple times daily even if just color mixing or quick sketch. As well as just loving to do it and learn, it is helping my progress! And my experience was that it was easier to go out and do when I had tools that made it easy to set up and comfortable to work. Great video showing the options! Based on my own experience, you just have to get out and try something and then adjust. Fortunately for my budget, I started VERY simply and then added a little at a time as I found what worked for me. Also, as always, GOOD watercolor paper - that is my ultimate splurge!

I think you are right. It can be a personal thing to find the right kit to take out en plein air and we often have a lot of trial and error. I love the peg and awl roll which does hold everything but can be a bit bulky if taking a pack up lunch and flask as well for a day out. It is still my very favourite if I can accommodate it though.
