As a Bicycle Mechanic, I can tell you this. No bike shop will touch a project like you have, because there is no money in it. If the the threads are not messed up too badly, you can chase them out with a tap, or have a shop do it, and just get some new pedals that fit. Yes I know you want to keep them vintage, but some times you cant. If the threads are shot, you can A. Drill them out and re tap them, B. Drill them out and put in a sleeve that can be tapped. Do you know what size holes are in the crank arms? I can look around where I live and see what I can find. Take it easy. I just thought of something. If you can take the pedals apart. You might be able to find or have made new spindles for them. Either made or bought. Do a Good search, I'm finding lots of Columbia vintage parts. Good luck.

My Dad had his old combie from the 1970’s or so. It lasted until the late 1990’s before he got rid of it. That old thing was amazing and so many incredible memories are tied to that old combie. Don’t give up on your van. My Dad always regretted giving his combie up.

Nice to see your update! It's possible the 'shudder' you're feeling from your van is due to your van having a bad "U" joint connecting the drive shaft to the differential. (I hope its something that simple) Can't wait to see you on the road with London.

*You should be able to drill out and re thread the bike pedals.* When an engine or anything metal strips a Bolt we just drill out the striped bolt and threads then re tap the threads (cut new threads in). Since the hole is wider you just have to buy pedals with larger threads. It 100% can be done correctly. It's done all the time.

"Right is right". Right side pedals are normal thread, install clockwise like most bolts. As in turn to the right to tighten. It shouldn't fight you much unless other things going on. Once you know that, the other pedal is opposite. It is kinda weird, I know , installing it counterclockwise! Also, make sure you don't accidentally have 2 right pedals!

Greetings from OKC. I understand you are planning on a Rte 66 road trip. when you come to OKC you need to go by the Ferris Wheel south of I-40 on Western. It used to be the old Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel that was at the End or Beginning of Rte 66 depending on which direction you go.

I just have to...kiddo...but since you are so good with your hands...how about a tiny house or cabin to tow and travel? Jack...from TINY CABON LIFE comes to mind.. Only because he has learned to build off grid TINY cabins to pull behind him when he travels..which is constant. Anyway...I am trying to talk hubby into that since we travel a lot too. Getting so expensive. Just a thought ❤ I love vintage bikes. I'm a kid of the 60s 70s....had one lol. Then the ten speeds arrived and well...u know😅 So fun Take care of yourself Always. Always enjoy your stuff. Cheers! Bill and Julia ❤

I have an old Schwinn (55 years old to be specific), and I enjoy riding it. Though there are plenty of modern parts that will not fit it. Like I had to replace the tires on it I already knew it would need Schwinn specific tires. Imagine my surprise when i find out the front and rear rim aren't even the same size. The bike does also need a paint job, though its such a good rider its hard to stop riding it long enough to do that.

Those bikes have standard 1/2”pedals and an American 1 piece bottom bracket so it should be easy to fix. Just don’t make the mistake of forgetting the pedals are reverse threaded on the left hand side. The next problem you will start to have is spokes breaking at the nipples or j bend. There is a mechanic at a spot called bike land that knows how to do the schwinn specific lacing pattern for the spokes.

As soon as I saw the missing pedals I knew what happened. Been there done that. It's not like I didn't do that before. DUH! Thread inserts. Drill and tap the cranks then use thread inserts to repair. It might be tough finding a reverse thread, but they are out there. Cranks should be pulled to do the best job. It must be done right because you have your whole weight on those pedals. Or, find some good used cranks and cut off the tips and weld them on these bikes. The van; lift up the license plates up and pull another van under. Talk about a nightmare waiting to happen. Stay healthy and enjoy the time with your son. You're the only dad Lincon will ever have. wrote this before seeing the whole video
