If you go to Europe, get a data-only sim (also known as a tablet sim) because you get more data for your euro. After you insert it in your phone / or tablet use a Google Voice Third Party app like Mo+ to call and receive calls and text messages, but make sure to download Hotspot Shield VPN (for free), because voip apps are banned on Vodafone and other providers. If you're not from US, get a cheap VoIP prepaid plan to call home, you could even get one that offers you a regular phone number so that your family and friends can call you without paying anything extra. Get a voip prepaid plan from providers available in your country and if nothing affordable is available then go with a global voip provider like cosmovoip. Don't use Skype OUT or Viber OUT because they are more expensive then other voip services. Look for reviews before you settle on a voip provider.

It's totally a different experience -I like both. When you travel alone, you get to meet more people and it is more likely that you'll be open to experiences that you wouldn't be if you were traveling with a friend. Traveling with a friend can be very fun. I guess it depends on where you travel to. Thanks for watching!

I just turn put my phone on airplane mode and turn on wifi. I have taken it to Europe, Asia and Canada so far without an international data plan. I just use wifi when it's available and talk on Skype :) I quite enjoy being somewhat disconnected when I travel.

Getting a local SIM card (if your phone is unlocked) is definitely the cheapest, and best, way to go. Did it in China, got awesome 3g connection everywhere, and would you know, google maps works amazing there! Any town, just type in a destination and it will give you directions walking, by car, or by public transit - can't go back to physical maps.

something that I tried when I travelled abroad was Wi-Fi Calling. Most smart phones have a setting where you can check Wi-Fi calling only and if you're in place with Wi-Fi it uses the internet connection to place your call. However, if the connection is shotty, you'll end up with quite a few dropped calls- which was my problem at my hotel in Vietnam. Your tips are really helpful as well, I will definitely try some of that on my next trip overseas

You rock! I wish I'd seen your videos before I started going overseas. I just put my phone and iPad on airplane mode and use wifi when it's available. That's something important to point out to people who are new to e-readers -- you can end up with major charges to them too!!! I know plenty of non-technical people with e-readers who might not realize that.

I prefer satellite phones when traveling abroad because you pay a low monthly rate (no contracts) & the connection is always there even in the middle of the jungles of the Amazon. You can read/send emails, call, get on the internet etc. For about $65.00 a month, what's not to like? I used an Iridium sat phone & it worked flawlessly; no worries about roaming or hidden charges on your cp bill. You may want to try 1 next time you go abroad. In your case, you may want to buy 1 :) hope this helps.

Whenever I travel internationally I just call Verizon before I leave, get the International unlimited data plan (which is an extra $30/month or so) and use data all I want. The cool thing is that they let me set my international data plan to auto expire and revert back to my US data for whatever date I come back to the US so I only pay for International data prorated. I never upgrade voice nor texting, though. That's REALLY expensive. I just tell people to email me while I travel instead.

Android got a setting to disable only the data when you're abroad (wifi will still work). I think this is the most usefull way, because it's only one switch to disable all the data without loosing the posibility to call someone or receive a call. I think/hope iOS also got a setting like this. And the european politicians are also going the right way (they're abroad very often). They limit the roaming-costs by law for eu-citizens (respectively for eu-simcards) traveling to another eu-country.

for travelers that can get WiFi there are soooo many free apps to download and use as long as your friends have the same app on their phones. what we do is use WiFi and than Facebook messanger. you can talk and video chat also. As for regular calls (calling grandma or relatives overseas that only use a house phone) get an international calling plan on your phone and a call will cost you something like 20 cents a minute. so make quick phone calls. have a great trip where ever you go!!!!!

Used to travel to Mexico twice a year and we'd always come home to a ridiculous $500+ cell phone bill (because we also use our cell phones for business as well so we try to limit our usage as much as possible - Clients leave a message and if it's important we'll call them back).. We'll be using Skype when calling home for sure 8-}

You don't bore me, but being german myself and having learned french, english italian and latin, It seems to me, that the german language has by far the most special rules and tiny changes in word-endings that change the whole meaning of a sentence. actually Mark Twain has written a whole book about why learning german sucks... really funny

it's still a lot easier than romance languages like french and spanish which vary quite wildly in terms of grammar from english. English is the product of german settlers' language gradually diverging, the similarities with french is more with specific vocabulary rather than sentence forms due to reasons which im not going to bore you with.

If you're not staying in the place long, like maximum one week, you can probably get by with just free wifis in cafes or malls and Skype everyone. But for something longer, a prepaid sim card is better and a cheap phone (just for calling)... just surf the net via wifi.

If you are able to get a wifi connection, I use the magic jack and magic app for the mobile phone. This works great because you can call the US and people can call you for free except the yearly $49 for the device. The also have an app for the iPad which turns your iPad pretty much like a phone. I use the mobile app Viber as well when on travel.

Good tips; however, for me when i'm on vacation, I'm ON vacation. I have no desire to call back to the US to say hi to Mom or my friends. I only want to have the option to call if & only if there is an emergency or an urgent matter. That's why I turn off & leave off my iPhone & bring a rented satellite phone. They are cheap & always connect even in remote parts of the globe where you couldn't get a terrestrial cell connection. It is always tied to orbiting satellites.
