Genshin Impact's Inazuma OST is composed by Yu-Peng Chen@HOYO-MiX, recorded by the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra with special guest top Japanese folk musicians, and co-produced by the HOYO-MiX team and Sony Music Entertainment (Japan) Inc. This video tells the story of the Inazuma OST's creative philosophy, and documents the one and a half month of remote collaboration across cultures and languages between the Chinese and Japanese teams.

I have been in an orchestra production as part of the choir and I kid you not, there are times where we go over literally 2 bars of music for 40 minutes or more. Sometimes the choir fucked up, other times the clarinet missed a beat, or the percussionist has an off day and didnt hit hard enough. It was rough back then and that's when everyone speaks the same language, in the same building, and we were only doing 1 piece of music. I cannot imagine the difficulty of doing this under pandemic conditions. Mad, mad props to everyone involved.

It's extremely difficult. It's also important to note that the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra is no joke. They're seen as one of the top orchestras in Japan and have some of the most talented musicians in Japan. The conductor Hirofumi Kurita and the recording coordinator Sachiko Miyano are also some of the best at least in the Japanese video game music industry. Miyano herself is also a top-tier music orchestrator in Japan involved in many projects. And yet even with all of these talents and experience these people have, they still faced difficulties and challenges during this production.

The fact that the video showed from 4:42 to 7:16, is I think Mihoyo was brave yet confident enough to release that footage. It feels very real that the situation was quite degrading, especially from how the conductor was quite offended by the composer keep asking in and out of "smaller" parts. Plus, this orchestra is Tokyo philharmonic orchestra, which represents the nation. I am very impressed by Mihoyo decided to show the authenticity of the music production. But I think that is why this BTS documentary makes more meaningful. That there wasn't just happy moments everytime, and instead, they decided to show ups and downs of the process, which made this video more interesting to watch. Considering their situation how they are communicating through facetime calls under COVID, it surely must have been much more difficult to communicate and dissatisfying of not being able to see things face to face in person. Overall, I eventually watched several times because how interesting the process was.
@katl8825
@katl8825 Жыл бұрын
I'm so glad it was included too. it's no easy task to work across languages and cultures even normally, but to sacrifice the face-to-face aspect of humanity (for good reason, to protect everyone's safety from COVID) would increase the challenge even more than normal. but as a huge fan of the Genshin music, I am so grateful that the Hoyo Mix team & all of the incredibly talented musicians, translators, recording and tech teams, and so on all still took the challenge together-- and I assume, will keep doing so for every new update, to pay the proper tribute to the real world culture & people that every region is inspired by. even if the game itself becomes less interesting to me, Genshin's music will always stay legendary...

if my assumption is correct, that guy at 3:14 is functioning both as a translator, music analyst and director's assistant. i can't stress how crazy this is, the guy must understand the music close to yu peng chen's level in order to communicate the translation to the japanese MD, conductor, and musicians. sometimes he asks for extra things that the yu peng chen didn't exactly instructed like different score for just the horns, and maybe instructing a glissando, to help convey yu peng chen's direction, indicating that he's very familiar with the scoring. if he just interpret directions verbatim, without understanding of the score, this would not work at all.

When you put this into perspective, they already made Japanese (Inazuma), Chinese (Liyue) and somewhat German/European music (Mondstadt), all fully orchestrated. And there's still 4 nations left in the game (probably French, Russian, Arabic/Indian/Egyptian, and Andean/Spanish kind of music). They're literally facing a monumental challenge, but surely, when all the nations have been released we'll have in our hands one of the most incredible soundtracks ever made in the history of gaming. The world itself represented in Genshin.

5:27 This part of the video really shows something that Genshin Impact has been trying to achieve: collaboration and understanding between cultures. The difficulty of appropriate and effective communication between professionals from different cultures, as well as the challenges of collaboration between creators (composer and producer) and performers (conductor and musicians), are beyond imagination (not to mention they did this virtually). You can also see the cultural difference in this small incident behind the scene: the Japanese team really cared about the details, such as holding breath throughout the performance to avoid any noise, the proper way of oral expression (translation), and the feeling of performers, while the Chinese team focused more on the macroscopic aspect, such as the completion of a track, the combination of different instruments, etc.

the music itself was developed in **FOUR** months. let that sink in. i hope this makes players realize how tough game development is and to not rush the developers with releasing content because there are so many things that go into making the game. the music took four months, what more the actual coding of the game, the creation of the nation, the development of the characters? it's already incredibly impressive that mihoyo is sticking to its promised timeline of an update every six weeks. that is nuts especially compared to other live service games. imo one of inazuma's biggest weaknesses is the story and i feel like if they had more time to write it, it would've turned out okay. but they definitely felt pressured to release it because players were getting antsy since it had been a while since the last region got released. thankfully, their music department never disappoints. it is definitely an amazing soundtrack. bravo to yu peng-chen, the tokyo philharmonic orchestra, the conductor hirofumi kurita, and the rest of the amazing team at hoyo-mix! edit: added words.

The part where they requested for them to not hurt the musicians’ feelings by just telling them they’re unnecessary for the piece stresses me out so much lol. As a japanese speaker i can tell that man was quite upset, and for a good reason too. But these sort of stuff always happen when you’re communicating with a lot of people in different languages. As for my opinion, that coordinator guy (if he's a coordinator), the one who so stressed about having the percussionist taking a break for a single peace is just so unprofessional. Look, i know, its for the welfare being of musician not to be stressed out but, common, they have their clients composition and to deliver that, they need to make sure they can deliver what the composer desire. Where is he;s authority if he cannot say something "The client wish to omit the part of percussion for this single piece so please take a break for now". That would be very simple for a manager or supervisor to tell that to their subordinate, instead, that guy lashes his dissatisfaction to the translator/interpreter and something of a little of mock to their clients. Man, i would be mad if im a client and the service i get from an organization i hire stresses me out because they dont want their structure to hurt their feelings. Do i have to adjust? That's unbelievably unprofessionalism to that manager or coordinator of that orchestra.

@@nafets6265 I think it's a bit of a culture gap happening since Japanese culture is very polite. And he did give his reasons for why he's stressed about it too that were valid imo. @@Freakattaker i think both chinese and japanese cultures are polite but i would say it isn't about a culture gap but the physical gap between yu peng chen and everyone else - with the composer not being there in-person it's far more difficult to imagine that there is a real orchestra there (feels like there's less of a tangible relationship between composer and orchestra ig) playing what he's written so communicating well is frustrating for both sides whereas, if he were there in person, there might be more understanding/sympathy and care rather than when the composer is literally sat in a room, alone with a bunch of screens trying to figure out what works best without as much input from those in japan. it's a hard situation for everyone when you can't collaborate efficiently :(( definitely felt for the person worrying about the percussionists and stressed for the translator in that moment

Well i was born n china and brought up with quite a bit of anti-japanese propaganda (it wasnt misplaced but just a bit exaggerated) i spent a good few years of my life steering clear of japanese related stuff (at one point wheni was about 12 i vowed to never step foot on japanese soil) but i when i grew up i realised it was pointless holding a grudge that was supposed to be more than 70 years before my time and i realised the meaning of the propaganda was not to cut off from japanese influence completely. Instead they encourage us to keep on good terms with everyone since the past is the past but still not forgetting the shame we suffered. So in a way its “forgive but not forget” because imo the war crimes that happened do no deserve to be forgotten so we can constantly remind ourselves what will happen if we lose control of ourselves.

My goodness. I felt so many emotions while watching this behind the scenes clip. Awe - at how they could collaborate virtually to make such a masterpiece. (It's super difficult to communicate effectively online, trust me, I'm a teacher who had to do online lessons due to covid) Sadness - For the hardworking percussionists who were literally told to go home (I used to be a band member so I can resonate with how that feels.) Stress & anxiety - for the translator who was getting reprimanded & Yu-Peng for not phrasing his intentions more sensitively. Empathy - For the musicians who needed to work overtime. (I know how that feels too well too) Relief - When they somehow managed to work out their differences and everyone seemed a bit happier (giving each other thumbs up, clapping and expressing thanks to encourage one another). Inspiration - by the humility that was displayed by both Yu-Peng and the various parties involved where they didn't insist on their way, but cooperated, accomodated, tried their very best to reach the vision that sensei has and acknowledged that they had much to learn. Appreciation - I don't think I can listen to inazuma's music without remembering the time and efforts that multiple parties invested to make this, as the conductor rightly said, a resounding success.

Im surprised at the difference comments from Jp version of this vid. At the Jp version, people are thanking Mihoyo and Yu peng chen and did not talked about the anniversary reward and here....well, people are also thanking Yu peng chen BUT also bring out about the anniversary stuff, yall really love to hold a grudge huh, lol Can we stop talked about the anniversary reward and just appriciate their hardwork? These few days, when Genshin twitter acc tweeted something, i saw people sending hate comments, and i just cant believed what i saw.... Let's just wait until the day of the anniversary then yall can bash Mihoyo if you want... Im just saying...what IF they wanted to surprise their players, so thats why they dont really revealed the rewards... Imagine trying to surpise your players but got hate comments instead.. Oh well thats just my wishfull thinking, but even if they wont do that ill just take what i can get cuz i play this game just for entertaiment ☺

This is like the ultimatum of MHY to the people who are saying "do they even care about us?" This is how much they really care about their playerbase and yeah even me ofcourse is disappointed at MHY anniv rewards but i cant be really mad at MHY when i literally see that the money i am spending on their game is returning directly into the game again, honestly i prefer that they return our money into this kind of things instead of giving it as a gacha because ingame experience is still much more important than ingame collectibles

The amount of hard work put in make me really appreciate the exceptional piece of music that is rarely seen even in movies or animation. Yu-Peng Chen sensei should be recognize to be in the same level as Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin!

Is amazing being able to see all the hard work that HOYO-Mix team put in each masterpiece of this soundtrack, I remember before the 2.0 version, I was searching for traditional Japanese music to listen while awaiting for Inazuma, but I was not prepared for the real Inazuma OST, every track hits with tons of emotion.

After watching this video, I realized what a difficult and colossal work the whole team working on the sound did. Even I, as an amateur musician, was able to highlight some of the points that were said in this video. I am very blog grateful to all those people and especially to Mr. Chen for creating such an incredible soundtrack filled with a storm of emotions.

I know the anniversary rewards were , let's face it really bad, but it feels like a disrespect to the amazing music they've put forth (bad anniversary rewards or not this music is amazing) to just be hating on the anniversary rewards and not giving proper thought to all the effort they put into this amazing soundtrack. I don't want to hate on anyone but it just doesn't sit right with me that in something completely irrelevant to the anniversary rewards is still getting hate comments about it even though the content in this video is a great portrayal of the process they have in creating Genshin's amazing music.

The music and team design should be seperated from the hate that the game is currently facing right now. They have nothing to do with the management and marketing team.

Who's not amazed by their music they put a lot of effort,patient,emotion and dedication for these pieces. I'm really moved by their music. I know it's challenging for Yu Peng Chen because can't directly meet the orchestra face to face during this pandemic but i hope they keep up the good work thank you for the music you all make ❤️🔥. Thank you for everyone who involved in making this music. ❤️❤️
