Camping in Zimbabwe, in the remote Chizarira National Park, at Mucheni Gorge campsite
A review of camping at Mucheni Gorge campsite, and info on Mucheni view campsite, both located in Chizarira National Park in Zimbabwe. Chizarira National Park is one of the most, if not THE most, remote national parks in Zimbabwe.
Mucheni View and Mucheni Gorge camps both live up to the expectations of spectacular views.

thank you Mr TG, what would be really nice is for u to cover entrance and park fees for overseas cars - e.g. Europe, UK, USA etc. Once again, thank you, u r a legend.

Good point. Maybe I should put that in the description. Problem is these things change. When we enquired in early 2021 the feed were unbelievably high. But by the time we got there it was down to: USD10.00 for vehicle entry. Once off. USD3.00 per person for Conservation fees. USD 17.00 per person for camping. These are for regional (e.g. SADC) residents. Almost the same for internationals as well. About USD1.00 more for each item.

I towed a Stealth Bush Lodge caravan into that area from Vic falls to Kariba via Binga and Kario. Beautiful country but national park fees are now an absolute killer. Thanks for the video.

The fees have come down a lot. We paid much less than what we were quoted in early 2021. We paid: USD 10.00 for vehicle entry. Once off. USD 3.00 per person for conservation fees. USD 17.00 per person for camping. They seem to want to revive the tourism industry. Although that being said, the quarantine situation certainly did not help. It's a wonderful country. We're looking forward to exploring the eastern areas as well.

@@TravelGigolo I'm not sure if those are official rates for sadac residents we paid the equivalent of R750 per person per night for camping in Mana pools and they wanted 100usd for overnight camping with absolutely no facilities at Matosadona for 4 people. They did not want to advise rates when we arrived late evening so it was a long negotiation next morning to get it down to usd 50. Unfortunately it's not just Zim that is so ridiculous Botswana also gone the same way doubling rates this year. Very sad because they are such nice countries but loosing SA tourists fast. Maybe they don't care would rather have international visitors.

We were initially also quoted those ridiculous rates over the phone. However the rates we paid at Chizarira were similar at Matusadona and at Mana. At Mana they had the rates on the board as well and we had no hassles/haggling. When did you go? It seems the rates changed late last year.

Such a beautiful park. Glad there are toilets now 😄 We weren't expecting any. We didn't see much large wildlife, maybe a legacy of the poaching. They seem to be putting in effort to revive the park. There is a lion conservation effort there too, but we didn't have time to really chat to them.

There is cellular reception but no data. So you can call and sms, but no apps or email. The reception is intermittent, though.

Hi there. Thanks. We are travelling with an off-road caravan from Vic Falls to Kariba in June. It is an 11 hour journey. Where would you suggest we stop halfway for a night?
@TravelGigolo

Hi there. That's a long trip, and some of it will be very slow going depending on the condition of the roads. Maabwe Bay is fantastic. Not really halfway though, more like 1/3 of the way, so you will still have a fair drive ahead (about 500 km). Between Maabwe and Kariba there aren't any options that I can confidently reccomend. I did a review on Maabwe, below. The contact details are in the description as well. They would also be able to advise you on the best routes to follow. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bNt1YM-SxJrKo2g.htmlsi=_aLg0A9qJtwjCF9j

Obviously in a roof top tent your away from wildlife . What do you do if you do actually encounter lions in your campsite ?
@TravelGigolo
@TravelGigolo 2 жыл бұрын
Good question. I haven't had to deal with that yet. I don't expect they'll bother us though if we're in the tent or at a fire. We have camped at Mana Pools where they were close by all the time (within a 1 km I would say). If they came into the camp during the night then we were certainly not aware of them. It was quite scary at night when we were braaing, we could hear them roaring close by. We went to bed early 😄 So I guess one must just be sensible and stay put at night or have a decent fire going. No Rambo moves, no foolish bravado.
