Sailing for months across the Pacific to the remote islands of Kiribati and the northern Cook Islands from Hawaii, I hop aboard the sailing cargo ship Kwai who provides Western resources to the most remote habited islands in the Pacific. Islands pictured include Puka Puka, Rakahanga, Penrhyn, Manihiki, and Nassau. I was hired by the owner of the Kwai, Brad Ives, to film this voyage after he saw my films of sailing between the Kiribati islands while he walked in on French Castaway Bruno Delalla and I bantering in his house of coral on Tabuaeran during a tropical rainstorm.

Incredible video for this old salt. After 55 years at sea, and many years of watching YT vids of mariners both professional and recreational, this is by far the most legit of them all. And the soundtrack is right up there at the top, also. Nothing is better than coming into port and the whole island is happy to see you. Thank you.

I greatly appreciate hearing that from someone as experienced as yourself! Was quite the experience to have the entire island anticipating your arrival with open arms, fantastic food, songs and dance. An experience I will never forget!

It's not exactly legitimate, it's not plying for trade as sailing ships used to, it's owned by those wealthy westerners, it's their toy

I wonder if now since the plandemic if kiribas are open arms. I can tell you in indo last year it was 50/50 they said the white man brings the corona. But the locals i knew from years before were still open arms.and knew its the chinese. Especially on nias. With this plandemic i stayed longer in indo it was 9 months. But now my plans are to find total isolation. Not from virus but from the communists. I am starting to think about fanning again and palmyra. Both excellent anchorages. Full of sea life. And as far from masks and quaranteens and democraps as i can get. I am on my 37 foot 43 year old cutter and have 3 years provisions. Finding this vlog has inspired me to make the long hard sail. Its 7000 miles to windward to fanning.

I also spent years at sea on commercial vessels, but nothing like this. It’s so refreshing to see happy people doing their jobs and making others happy. I would join this crew in a heartbeat! This is the life I’ve dreamed of since I can remember. I’m deeply impressed and happy to see this life still exists! Put me in Coach!

Thank you for the memories, KWAI is EDNA reborn. 30 years ago I was sailing the EDNA, she was similar size and rig. and I recognize the same Islands, lagoons, and sharks. I didn't make it back because the EDNA wrecked and it broke my heart. It captures true, the people and crews!

So great to catch up with SV Kwai, Met the owner and operator more than ten years ago on the Big Island of Hawaii. Great to see she is still sailing with a wonderful crew. Many happy memories of the Cook Islands, Avarua and Aitutaki. Perfectly done video, no narration just the music and places and people. Kia Orana!

That was one of the best videos I have seen (and heard) in years. The ‘COSTCO’ (Kirkland) nappies really brought it home, as well as the very satisfied and content look on the faces of all the deckhands. And thank you for not blabbering and narrating....anyone that needs to be told what you were doing does not belong in that environment.

This Costco delivery vessel travels to the ends of the earth! All the women of this ship really hold the operation together. I am glad you enjoyed my style of filming, I prefer the narration to be told by that of the natives songs over a monotone description of events. Leaves some room for imagination ;)

Man, this is incredible. I spent 10 years working in traditional sailing ships but none of them ran cargo, they were all training ships, none of them used for their original purposes. We sailed lots of places, learnt alot, but to be running cargo under sail to these amazing communities in the South Pacific is truly something special. I'm tempted to find the Kwai and hop onboard, I might never come back haha.

I'm Micronesian and this is the first "documentary" I have seen of my fellow Micronesians in Kiribati. I never knew that there were so many islands in that nation. I have always known about the Marshall Islands and the Islands of Palau, Guam and CNMI....but this is perhaps the most I've seen on Kiribati. Wow, thanks for the vids, been following your vlogs for quite some time now.

Big smiles on my face watching this. I live on the east coast of Oz so the South Pacific Islands aren't that remote to us here and have been over on a few of them. Would have loved a life at sea visiting them like this. Idyllic. That singing, I just adore it. Have been in many a sing sing and the melody and harmony that the islanders can produce is like nothing else. I love them to bits.

Hey Cameron, GREAT editing job, FANTASTIC video and AWESOME memorial shots of Tekateke...you even got him smiling! Answering some of the questions posted below: the "developed" Western World treats clothing as disposable and so the islands closest to Hawaii have bales of used clothing from places like salvation army shipped in and the islands like Solomons and Vanuatu have bales from Australia and New Zealand. So, yes...it is trippy to see a Tee with a slogan or advertising that is WAAAAYYY out of place!! It took me years to get my customers to switch from Huggies to Kirkland diapers...BUT note I WAS pushing reusable cloth diapers HARD at the same time. And yes, all 8 islands the Kwai can service on a voyage, greet her arrival as if you're Santa. Note: the work is a LABOUR of love: for all those with wide eyes, let me stress the LABOR bit! ko'rabwa, mei taake, mahalo and tekeraoi
