Excellent take on an excellent film. Thanks for framing this film not only in the road film context, but also within the male gaze - definitely a theme within the genre. The inclusion of Hunter, the child, is an interesting element that I’d be curious to hear more about. There’s also a road film called “Wanda” by Barbara Loden that predates Paris, Texas that has similar themes as this Wenders film but explores it through the eyes of a female lead and female director. It’s interesting to see what elements stay (abuse) and what is reimagined (Wanda gets to drive). Enjoyed this analysis!

I probably should have said thank you for this comment 4 months ago, but wanted to get around to seeing Wanda beforehand. I found it on streaming and has been sitting in my queue since, I just haven’t found the time. My local theatre just announced they’ll be showing a 35mm print of it next Wednesday, and while I’m normally working during the screening I might try and trade shifts to see it, I hope I can. Anyway all of this reminded me of this comment. So, yeah. Thank you for your kind words. If I see it I’ll let you know 🙂

Great video! Paris, Texas is the kind of movie I love to listen to other people talk about because I always hear about some perspective I hadn't considered before.

Lol. I did this for a school project and after hours of video editing had to cut a few paragraphs from what I’d originally recorded so I had to quickly re-record the ending the night before it was due.

He’s a human and this isn’t some Hollywood movie with a happy ending. Natasha’s character isn’t exactly perfect either. They are both deeply damaged people. They aren’t necessarily meant to be liked. I can understand why you don’t like him though.
