Even though I am from Romania, this is still quite useful for me. I am 12 years old and I have been living in England for 7 years but I will finally be visiting my home country next year for Easter. We will stop in Bucharest first to meet some old friends and my grandmother and after that, we are going to Tulcea to meet my grandfather and my uncle. I am very excited.

The yellow taxis are absolutely fine, the fees are displayed on the door and also inside on the meter next to the driver. Just make sure they’re one of the mainstream taxi companies that run on regular fares, because there are tons of ‘independent’ yellow taxis that display much higher fees. But ultimately you just have to check what you’re stepping in to.

Bucharest is gorgeous, reminds me of paris FAR too much. (in a good way) Its COMPLETELY different from the rest of the country which is very cool in my opinion, its good to have a distinct capital. The public transit in bucharest and 99% of the cities is GREAT. The transit between the cities is MOSTLY great. There are always trains, thats not an issue, but some are quite slow, specifically in the moutains which makes sense. Busses are there and sometimes faster in the mountains but usally seem to be the same speed, so I prefer the trains. Natural life in romania is amazing as well, parks everywhere urban, and the rural countryside, the mountains, all beautiful. I went in thinking romania is a balkan slavic eastern culture, but nope, couldn't be more wrong. Yes theres some as you can tell in the food, especially ottoman culture, you also see that with hooka everywhere. But mostly the culture seems to be western, and from what i learned from locals, its always been like that, even during the iron curtain the country was the only one to not stop any western imports, expats, etc, and was infact a HUGE vacation spot for westerners, and still is in terms of western Europeans. They even have entire villages turned into resorts made for "western style entertainment". It was crazy to learn all about the culture, reminds me a lot of home in Italy, specifically sardinia. They have the cafe culture, the cheese, wine, and beach culture, the party and drug culture, its simply home!

I like this style of travel video, very much. You begin in your home, introducing the travel destination, then you point out what is interesting, finally summing up your favorite things about the country you are visiting. This is how I like to prepare to visit a place. First, what is the place like, do I need to learn the language first, and why am I going there? I don't want to be just a tourist, I want to understand the culture of the people in the place I will be visiting. A little background makes the taking in of the experience far richer. I wish more travel videos followed this example. Very good.

Hey mate, nice review so far, thank you for that as a Romanian from Bucharest myself, just some details here - romanian traditional food, in general the ones that you find in restaurants are related to major events like Christmas or Easter etc... now, the pre-christmas or any other Orthodox event usualy is predated by Fasting(1w,1m or even 2m - depending on the size of the event) so we don't have Vegetarian Menus but we do have "Meniul de Post" which is fasting menu where no animal product is used, also, we are a based 4 season country, so most of our cusine follows the season for meat, vegetables, spreads and so on - during spring for e.g. green vegetables(baby bean sprouts, spinach, mountain spinach...etc) and a lot of barbeque like Mici, which is the traditional food for 1st of May are usually ate during this time - summer you get all the salads of mixed vegetables or smoked and dried meat, by default the Branza cheese and i could carry on and on for each season, but the point is - ask a Romanian what he eats, not the restaurants that mainly sell heavy foods used for major events, even our soups are season based! 😁 Cheers and have fun there! P.S. national drink is Tuica - Tzuica, Palinka(which is a slavic word for burning drink) is only for Transilvania which stands for like 30% of the rest of the country citizens

Slight common mistake. Romanian IS a latin language with a few slavic influences. Its not a mix of both. It only has about 13% percent slavic influences which is far less than people expect. Romanian has slavic influences the same way French has germanic or spanish has arabic influences.

Min 7:45 ... The building at 12 Doamnei Street was designed and built in 1886 by the Hungarian-German architect Adolf Lang to become the Palace of the "Nationala" Insurance Company. In 1917, the building was consolidated and expanded. Three new floors are added to it and, from an architectural point of view, it borrows from the art deco style, specific to the time. The original ornaments from 1886 are preserved, however.

King Sigismund creates the "Order of the Dragon". It was an alliance of Christian rulers against the Ottoman invasion of central Europe. The father of Cepes (in Vlach language means "to impale") participated in it. Later, the son also participated in this coalition, which became famous in the Western world through the writer Stoker. Favorite activity of Vlad the Impaler Dracul (from the word Dragon) is cutting ears, tongues and of course driving a stake). It is a curious moment that in 1462 nailed the turbans of the Sultan's Ottoman envoys because they refused to take off their turbans to greet him.

i wanna add that these citys wich you said to be linked to austria hungary have nothing to do with austria hungary. around 12 century germans went to this area and founded 7 citys. Hermannstadt, Kronstadt, Bistritz, Schäßburg, Mühlbach, Broos and Klausenburg. and these are the citys you mentioned, they have this kind of architecture, because the germans lived there and built these citys. they were called the Transylvania saxons. (saxon was a word for a german person in this region). the germans were expelled after ww2 and nowadays all previous transylvania saxons moved back to germany or are extinct or live on as romanians. i have a workmate who comes from romania but his name is german.

The Vlad Tepes castle is the mainstream one , the real one is half in ruin and you have to climb a steep mountain to get to it , its also free and doesnt include a tour guide :) .V.Tepes aka Dracul (The Devil) used to drink his enemies blood after killing them thats where the vampire myth started with the locals , and it did way before the book and the movie.His castle is also built by the nobles (the elites of that time) he enslaved and made em carry each brick to the top of the mountain to build him that castle.

Where did you get that from, that he was driving their blood? Legends... He was a noble, lead a country and it's army, and ordered the death of thousands, most of lower class than him.. I doubt he drunk their blood(cause of desease and he would have known about it he was not a savage). And Dracula does not come from "dracul" is the use of two words that had to do with the people he came from and something else related with territorial organization and intelligently used the word that that popular translates to devil... As the Romanian word for devil is diavol, drac itself is a popular superstition

As a Romanian who has been living in Bucharest for the last 30 years, let me address some issues with your video. Your recommendation about not taking the yellow taxis is not really valid. You should certainly take the yellow taxis because they are easy to find, they cost less than Uber, the driver wont cancel on you and they know shortcuts. Plus, they always cost the same, because the fee does not fluctuate during peak hour. However, you need to be aware of the company, if its a legit one (just look up some top taxi services in Bucharest, there are at least 10 good providers) and note the price/ km that they practice (it is written on the door). The building at 7.31, the cylindrical one, is not "socialist" architecture, just modernist, since it was finished in the `30. Palinka is never made out of grapes. We only make tzuica out of grapes. This has half of the alcohol content of palinka and it is a drink which is specific to Romania. Palinka is found in other European countries (Hungary, from which we borrowed it, Poland, Croatia, Slovenia), therefore, it is not the national alcoholic drink of Romania. It`s made from plums or apples or pears in 99% of the cases (some do make it out of quince and whatnot, but they are the rebels).
@user-Jab1000
@user-Jab1000 Жыл бұрын
You do have to be careful with the yellow cabs. Some are okay, but other are quite shady. Even those "reputable" companies. When we came back from the mountains the price they wanted to charge us was simply outrageous, despite the price/km they advertised on their car. They can also fix the meter to jump faster than it should. We also took Uber one time and it wasn't that much more than a cab. Tuica is usually made from prunes.
@vald9698
@vald9698 Жыл бұрын
@@user-Jab1000, as someone who has been using the yellow cabs at least twice a day since 2008, I stand by my comment. I have also repeatedly tried all the other services, Uber, Bolt, even Yango for the short while they were here. Uber started very well but nowadays their services absolutely suck. Yellow taxis are much more reliable and much cheaper. On rush hours Uber can be three times more expensive than a taxi, so, no, thanks. I know what tuica is USUALLY made of and they are called plums, prunes = dried plums. The guy said palinka is made out of grapes and I explained that only tzuica can be made out of grapes, but never palinka. Did I make myself clear?

@@maximluiza , Dracula is a made up name given to him by a novelist who never even visited the places of the Romanian ruler; this makes his made up name younger than his trues given name - and besides, the history should remember him by his real name not by the one he was give to him centuries later

@@alexandrupascu5970 yes but if he's addressing tourists it makes sense to use the term Dracula. He didn't go into the detail of the history vs fiction. People, you need to stop being so sensitive and overreact to eveything. You're dealing with a traveller interested in Romania. He's seen over 60 countries. Are you going to tell me yould be capable of saying 💯 percent accurate information about all of them? Be reasonable and recognize the general intention of the video without criticizing everything. With an attitude like that, no foreigner will deign to show interest in our language or culture because they'll fear people like you jumping down their throats.

@@maximluiza if you want others to learn your history from other than the official sources you have yet to grasp the meaning of the word history; I have nothing against him being interested in our country and visit it but maybe you might want to enlighten you a bit: there are countries, where you can be banned for saying wrongful things about their history as they see it; for example, if you go to Greece with a guide, that guide has to follow the exact words allowed by their culture ministry (hope I got the authority right) - that guide is always followed by a Greek counterpart who knows the other guide language - you cannot deviate from the already script; and I may not be a traveler but I' ve read few books ; why are you so bothered that I have corrected him?
@maximluiza
@maximluiza 10 ай бұрын
@@alexandrupascu5970 people who correct others think they are doing them a favor. But it's not always like that. On this thread there are several critical reactions very negative in tone. This is not the kind of attitude anyone should have towards someone curious to learn the culture, the language and to popularize it. We should be encouraging and stop fretting over small mistakes. I didn't know the Greeks were so obsessed with the official version of history as to give guides exact scripts to follow. A little extreme, if you ask me.
