Hello Dustin, thanks for the video. Because of your comparison with the Sigma 23mm 1.4 for Fuji, I bought the Viltrox 27mm 1.2. I had previously owned the Sigma 23mm 1.4. And then sold again. I recently had the Viltrox with me on a trip to Venice/Italy. Also found it very versatile, although I had to get used to the 40mm focal length. I thought it was big and heavy and I would prefer it to be a little more compact. But the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. I used it alternately with the Tamron 17-70mm. Many greetings from Berlin / Germany Marko

Hello, with your experience on both the viltrox and the sigma, which one is the best in your opinion ?
@markodumke1385

@@user-fs5yp8mm6x The Sigma is already very sharp at f/1.4. Both that Viltrox is already sharp at 1.2. As Dustin already described in his video, the bokeh is busier on the Sigma and creamier on the Viltrox. That was also a deciding factor for me when I bought it. I'm more of a 35mm (full format) person. So I had to get used to the focal length. The Viltrox is really praised in many reviews. I can only agree. You have to see whether the focal length suits you. In any case, with the Viltrox at 1.2 you have a full frame look. Maybe you can test the Viltrox on yourself. But sometimes I miss the 35mm (full frame) focal length. But I still have a 23mm 1.2 Voigtländer :)

Thank you for your thoughts! Just a few days ago I used the 27 paired with the 75 for a birthday party event shoot with 2 Fuji bodies in very challenging conditions, first high contrast outside with clear blue winter sky and really cold in the city, then in a dark old basement with spot lighting. What a perfect combination those lenses gave me! I have already packed the 27 for my next upcoming trip.!!

I just switched from Panasonic micro 4/3 to Sony APSC and mostly do travel photography. Really takes some getting used to the larger lenses. I guess I'll just have to try out if my Viltrox feels too bulky and heavy on my next trip...

Always find it difficult to gauge the real life weight of, well anything, unless am physically holding it. That said, it's obviously heavier than most Fujifilm apsc glass. However, another way of looking at this issue is to note that this lens could eliminate the need for several primes, if travelling. That must be a bonus. To borrow one of your favourite phrases "everyone's mileage may vary". Like many more, mature, ok ,older photographers, I grew up with the 50mm ff equivalent as the "standard" lens. However, whilst still liking this, frequently the 35mm is found to be more versatile. If you are able to carry a smaller, even the excellent 18-55 2.8-4 lens, still a standout in 2024, these two would make an excellent travel combo. Also, it seems to have escaped the notice of many that this is a fast lens, such pieces of optical glass have never been lightweight. Oh, I already have the excellent Fujifilm 27 2.8, it has proven to be an excellent lens, not all that sure I want to permit gas to render it redundant?

Is the 27mm good for general video work? Most of the KZfaqrs only talk about photography. I think that this lens is great for portraits and street photography but I like a bit of a wider focal length and I'm planning to go for Fuji xf18mm 1.4 for versatility and light setup and use the 27mm and 75mm if I need to focus only on portraits.

I do prefer this lens optically, though if you are going to do a lot of travel, the smaller size and weight of the Sigma might be attractive.

I still want to see this lens up against the Samyang 45 1.8 on A7C(II/R). Wouldn’t that be the better travel option at near equivalent DOF as the 27 1.2 but much lighter?

I've definitely commented on the Samyang as a travel lens before. I do really like it for that, though the Viltrox is next level in terms of build and performance (but that does come at the cost of weight).

Very well may be a better setup weight/size wise but also $650 (35%) more expensive. Definitely pros and cons
@PetrKlapper
@PetrKlapper 4 ай бұрын
That's the 'problem' with aps-c lenses, because you need quite big 1.2 lens to get almost the Samyang 45/1.8 field of view on FF and 1.8 aperture like depth of field. That's also why you might like it, feels familiar at 41/1.8 ;)

@@DustinAbbottTWI Yeah, but 3.5 x the weight (as in the whole another camera weight) so we can shoot in APS-C isn't exactly 'better build' advantage I think. And I do shoot in crop a lot, I'm not against it at all, but not as a main option (except with Sony 11/1.8 when I'm too lazy to carry even 14GM etc. because ultrawide is just a secondary lens for the given trip).

Despite Zeiss sturdy metal housing, they weigh only 335g and 361g, respectively. It’s take me awhile to wean myself from zooms (except Sony 100-400mm), but having all five in the bag, I’m learning.

As being noted by a growing number of people is that YT videos like this are more geared to selling a product, shilling is the word I want to use. As I recommended to another great influencer, I want to see you use the product, I want to see you walk the walk, get your hands dirty as you use the product you review. This comes much closer than sitting on a chair telling me just how great this lens is, and all you are doing is sitting in a chair. Get out, get on the ground, demonstrate in real life, out in the open, no charts, and put this to the test. There are so many lenses from so many companies that it is getting a little confusing and certainly crowded. I want to hear no more 'this is a must buy lens, you can't possible go another day without this lens/product.' Not your fault but we get word of a great lens that is a must buy only to be treated to another lens six months later that is a must buy lens. You get the message. For instance, Sony came out with a lens that had me thinking, the 20-70mm F4 G lens. All we heard was that this is IT. Soon we get word of a 24-50mm f2.8 lens. What do we get? Yes, this is a Have to Have lens. You will no eat properly or sleep soundly if you don't buy this lens or product (generic for all the crap shills push). I'm at a point where I'm done with this nonsense. It's gotten insane. Now we see a trend to 'Retro' cameras. Oh, God. Please. No more. I have a retro camera, the Nikon F2 and FE2. Funny thing is that many Sony cameras look like the FE2, so Sony has been making retro cameras for the longest time. Now Nikon thinks they have a winner with a FE/FM look alike camera. God, I'm getting sicker. And the next announcement is Fuji released another been there, done that camera with a fixed lens and tilt screen that screams old, 1940s Leica and all the other rangefinders coming out of German. This whole show is BS. We forgot one thing, the Art of Photography, how to get that cute shot of your grandchild eating and wearing the icing from their birthday cake that will last forever.

With all due respect, is not this video exactly what you are asking for? I already did a thorough review with test charts and photos in the past, and this video was about me taking the lens on a trip and taking the kinds of photos I would take with my own lens (which this is, by the way).

Why are you so hung up on the size and/or weight of a lens? If the lens gives excellent performance, learn to live with it.,
@SpecialBrewCan

With smaller APSC cameras, which many people buy because of their smaller size and lighter weight, many photographers want to also limit the size and weight of their lenses. If size and weight doesn't hold any interest to you, then I'm happy for you, but, and this might come as a surprise to you, not everyone is the same as you, and we don't all have the same priorities. If you're not bothered by the size and weight then why not just move on to another video?

Exactly. Ive recently moved from Canon to Sony - an aps-c A6700 and an A7iv. One of the joys is the smaller size and weight. I have sold my Sigma Art 50mm and 24mm and Tamron 85mm. These are lovely lenses, but so big and heavy, they rarely came out of the drawer. Glad to replace them with compact FE lenses that are at home on either Sony camera. When I go out casually, but want to take a camera in case opportunities arrive, or if I am on holiday, I do not want to lug around a big bag with kilogrammes of glass and metal. As the saying goes - the best camera in any situation is the one you have with you. That goes for lenses too. Aller

I think the commenters here have nailed the counterargument well. My take on this particular lens is that I find the size and weight worth it for the performance, but not everyone will share that perspective.
