For those of you going into the Navy, that haven’t left yet, everything this guy says is spot on. The thing is, while it will all be new, it will also get to be normal for you. There are two kinds of enlistees, those that let it all break them and those that let it all shape them. You can, if you choose right, and most do, come out on the other side stronger, with great character, and able to take on this crazy world when you get out.

I’ve been in the navy for a year now and there are many valid points he brings up but we must all remember that this is his POV. My experience so far has been absolute hell. Just survive and try to find those good moments to motivate you to make it through the next day.

You will never forget your first ship. It’s been 40 years since I walked up that gangway...but I still smell the paint, stripper, fuel, and exhaust that hung in the air. Still remember taking my first shower....and getting to my rack to find everything stolen. Boot Camp mistake....made my rack. My first lesson...put everything in my locker....make my bed and get in it...get out...strip the bed and lock everything up. Leave anything out....they will steal you blind. Second very important lesson...put your boots in the bunk with you. We had a compartment fire...diesel fuel fire. All our boots were on the deck....my boots were on fire....had to fight my way out of a burning compartment through fire and black smoke in bare feet! Last big lesson....war sucks. It is still hard to sleep thinking about all the people I helped kill. And you are absolutely right about people....some can take the pressure some just break. On my first week on the ship...I was walking by the print shop when a first class staggered out cover in blood...he collapsed and died right in front of me. A young E3 had gotten pissed....taken apart a pair of sizers and taped them to each hand. As soon as the shop supervisor came back from chow...he was attacked and killed. Crazy ending....it was later determined the shop supervisor drove the young man to kill him. He served no prison time....he went from mental ward to discharge. You see it all in the NAVY. So...you can never be ready for everything...good luck to you all. It will be an adventure you will remember for the rest of your life. Raven...USN DAV RET.

boot camp is a game; just play their game and don't try to buck the system. whatever you do; don't ask why. there's the right way, the wrong way, and the Navy way. also, play the single game until you're well established. the military is stressful enough without adding a spouse and children to the mix before you're established

Wow, I spent 6 years in the Navy and while most of what you said I definitely agree with, We never lost power, always had decent food, and I had been DCPO so in my berthing space even though our thermostat was broken I knew what valves to turn to get Heat or to keep it cold in the Berthing area. Definitely work long hours but If you have a Good Command they maximize inport Liberty time as long as you work hard at Sea. I was on a Destroyer (DD-969) which probably made a difference.

I'm grateful I came across this video, I'm getting shipped out to Boot camp in 4 months and I've been watching people experiences on how boot camp went for them and how to it would be like after the going through Boot camp and A school, looking at the comments actually blew my mind... Now I'm wondering what I'm getting myself into.. but that shouldn't stop me from doing what I want for my future.

Good info here, I was an H.T. in the 1970s, I know what you are saying about the heads out of order! That was most of my duty, uncloging the head, I used a fire extinguisher, worked well, but then we had to listen to D.C and F.C. lol, however, thank you for your service.

I was a seabee. When i first went in we had duty sections and watch. After my 2nd deployment we went to "professional watchstanders " anyone that was separating or transferring within a few months stood the quarterdeck watch. It was great. No more duty section musters no more walking around on a balls to 4 at the barracks looking for fires that were not happening barracks was across the street from the fire dept anyways. Monday to Friday was 630 to 1530. Unless you were in a class or field exercise. Most of the time if your tasks were done you were told to go hide till 1530 then go do whatever we wanted. Deployment was 6 days a week 12 hour days. Afghanistan was different. I was on convoy security and we would do missions and projects and not much time off unless we were at camp leatherneck.

MY Dad was in 22yrs , was in WW2 4 yrs away in the Island hopping campaign hoping the ship would not to get hit by a Japanese kamikaze. I'm watching this for my daughter who is looking to get in . I was on an FFG and as a Sonar Tech we had a bunch of spaces to use. The forward equipment room was where I kept my stereo and the guy in my division could use it. I kept a bass amp and my friend played drums. The CSO played guitar. It was pretty kicked back but I know my experience was WAY different than other divisions, even other divisions in combat systems(the smarter, less sketchy people) deck division often got some of the worst dirt bags and groups of thieves. Yes theives are an unfortunate reality. We had one kid came into our division and fell in with his homies and the group were stealing and pawning stuff in town untill they got caught. The CO did not want some big racial issue so they all got a slap on the wrist. They were lucky they didn't get float tested. There were so many they could have been their own division on a small ship like an FFG. At least he had enough sense not to steal from his own division. This issue hung around this kid like a rotten fish. Once a thief, always a thief.

I enlisted on August 15th and I am going to be an OS and I ship out July 1st,2020, because I am in my senior year of high school and I will graduate on May 21st,2020. I am also a Navy sister, my older sister went in undes and now she is an OS, she is stationed in San Diego but on deployment right now, I was born on the Portsmouth, Virginia, because my bio father was in the navy and on deployment when I was born.

Spent almost 3 1/2 years on a cruiser in yoko. The last 6 months extended due to covid after i gave up my apartment household goods cause i was about to transfer. And spent the last 6 months on the barge as a paid e5 with a pin. I can honestly say I've had the best my best and worst moments out there. Been on restriction 3 times out there, all bs reasons when I first got there before I knew people and how things worked. Never got in trouble for the actual bad shit I did and once i was a valued memebr of the crew. My closest friend since a school and went to the same ship and jumped off a building on Thanksgiving and my fiance broke up with me due to my depression over it. My first warrant got a dui, first chief was fucking a seamen and got kicked out, and one of my best friends on the ship got sexually assaulted on the ship and nothing was done. Honestly there is so much more bad shit I'd be here all day. But I'll tell ya all the decent people I served with I know have my back and i have theirs. I'd die for them. They've seen me at my worst and best. I've had a fist fight fight with one of them and had them crying on shoulder the next week. I'm bit some combat unit or something in which I'd assume the bind would be even more but u honestly can't understand what certain people went though. Honestly coming back to the states i had to relearn how people act here. Honestly if u seen a veteran in need please help them. Not every veteran is the same but the ones who are troubled typically are the ones had it the hardest.

Civilian life ain't no better than military life. Regardless what branch you join. The majority of people are stuck in a dead end job, hometown & relationships/marriages. Also family members holding them back to fulfill their dreams. That's why they're bored & miserable AF. The military ain't that bad at all. Because it depends on you. I am in my 30s. I want to join the Navy. Hopefully, I pass the ASVAB & MEPS. No promises. Because you can fail both exams. Whatever happens. I go by the flow. 😅

You forgot to mention the people on a ship that would steal the cup from a blind person on a street begging. The 1st time I took a shower on my ship I put the towel I had used on a chain that was used as a rail for a hatch that was leading down to the deck below. I came back and it was gone. I asked if anyone had seen my towel and nobody had, I learned then and there that you can't trust anyone on a ship. Well almost. It's disgusting, I had dirty clothes stolen from me. What I went through in the Navy made me alot tougher and stronger to never give up. I've been able to survive a stroke, a blood bacteria and cancer. Because of the Navy and God I'm still alive today. I should be 6 feet under right now. And by the grace of God and my time in the Navy I'm not. I had a 50% chance of surviving my cancer, and that's before you take into consideration my blood bacteria, if you took both of them into consideration, then my chances of surviving were probably less then 25% maybe alot less. I just thank God for every day that I'm alive.

So sub carrier and small ship life all very different as opposed to off ship life. The food it was often mystery meal or chicken. I chose chicken a lot. Your duty station also depends on how life is all the bases are different. Would i do it again yes. But not with the sjw way the navy is going now.

In 20+ years of Navy serves I never had a job that I thought I couldn’t accomplish. There were just people who made it more difficult. Easiest job I ever had. Show up on time (early) and do what you’re told. Gets some rank and tell others what to do. Become a CHIEF PETTY OFFICE and make your own rules! Navy Chief out!
