We have decided to watch and review Danish movies on occasion and this time we pulled out the Danish football film Summer of 92 or Sommeren '92. It checked all the boxes for a good sports movie. Personal drama, underdog team rising to the occasion, great match against a couple football powerhouses.
With a quick correction, we will see Denmark vs. Bosnia & Herzegovina in a friendly.
‪@DBUTV‬ we'd love to get to a Euro match and promote the 2021 national team :).
We also talk about a few of our Danish football memories as we've watched more national team matches over the years. Watch the movie and the Euro Championship!!

A fun story from a Dane living in the Netherlands at that time: First of all, going from just not qualifying all the way to the end coming so far was quite a thrill, even to me, not really interested in sports. It could always be heard when the Dutch scored in a match: Noise and fireworks in the streets, especially after the match. In the semi finals the Danish team played the Dutch - and won, everything was quiet in the streets, They were so disappointed. On the other hand, when the final arrived and the Danes won, the Dutch celebrated as if they had won. The neighbor came to my door with a bottle of wine, quite unexpectedly (for me, at least).

I was 17 and we were a bunch of guys and a girl in my room watching the finale. Ofcourse we had a lot of beers, since that was perfectly normal for 16/17 years olds to drink. When we won, We grabbed a couple of bags of beer and went to the busstop. The bus had danish flags on it, like it has when it is the queens birthday, and it were 1/4 full. The busdriver didn't accept any payments, so we just drove along for free. More people arrived at every busstop, dressed in red and white and had small flags with them. At some point the bus was full and couldn't take in more people. We sung danish football songs and had a great party in the bus. The bus couldn't finish its ride, because the center of Copenhagen was full of people on the streets. We partied all night long at Rådhuspladsen and had to walk home, because no busses or Taxis drove anymore. When I woke up with a lot of hangovers, I watched TV and the danish team driving in an open bus from the airport to Rådhuspladsen. I felt so proud and wished I could have been at the road to congratulate them with the 1000's of other people. But my hangovers said no.

After we won people took to the streets among other places in Copenhagen, and had a blast of a party. I remember a few days later seeing on the news, a journalist interviewing people, and at some point they showed a young guy standing on top of a police car waving a giant Dannebrog back and forth. The journalist asked a police officer standing right next to the police car, If it wasn't against the law jumping around on top of a police car, and the police officer looked up at the young man, looked back at the reporter, smiled and said "Not today".

As a guy of generation '82 myself I can totally relate. Being at my fathers place in central Aarhus and opening the windows, just cheering until all people around you had their windows open and waving to random people around you and on the opposite side of the street and random cars honking their horns. Even at age 10 we knew this was a 1 in a 100. Our 1998 world cup team was better but couldn't win.

I live in Aarhus, and on the night of Euro ‘92, spontaneous cheering broke out all over the city after the match. I met my neighbors the next day, both pf them were in their 70’s at the time. They told me the only other time, they’ve experienced a general mood of joy like that, was on the evening of may 4th, 1945. (I don’t know how much WWII occupation you know about Denmark, but that was the night of the announcement about the germans in Holland, Northwestgermany and Denmark surrendering.) Lakridsrod ... you’re not supposed to digest it. You’re just supposed to chew on it, until the taste has been chewed away. But it is very ... “woody”. A fact you need to be prepared for. But tip of the hat for at least trying it out. 👍🏻

I remember 92 somewhat vividly. I was a teenager, and my sport was Handball rather than Football so I did not really pay attention to the Euros until we made it past the qualifiers. We had not been supposed to go and then suddenly there we were advancing and advancing. Coming from a pessimistic family we did not celebrate the win against the Netherlands too hard, but when we won the finals my dad who was apathetic to sports as well was super happy, we went to the town center and it was absolute partying chaos, people climbing on top of buildings, there was so much singing, drinking and cars drove through the town all night with people yelling, celebrating and so on. The euphoria lasted for days and to this day I think all of the footballers who participated in the Euro 92 are sort of national heroes. It also set precedents for our receptions of winners like our handball teams when they are awesome. But nothing quite matches 92 because it was such an epic story.

Two doses of nostalgia. Licorice root reminds me of my childhood in the 60's. You just chew it, don't swallow. And '92. What I remember best is the evening of the semifinal. I did not watch it. I was playing board games with my friends as I always did on Monday night. On my way from my friend's house to the station, I was passed by a car honking its horn, and the people in it were waving red and white scarves. That is when I knew we hand won. The train was packed with people celebrating. They got off at Copenhagen Central, to go Town Hall Square to continue celebrating. I stayed on and went home.

In ‘92, I was sailing as a cadet and was not able to see any of the football games in the championships. We received news by telex and when Denmark won, Lyngby Radio sent a telex one meter long: D A N M A R K E R B L E V E T E U R O P A M E S T R E It was hilarious. Later, Søfartens Velfærdsråd sent out tapes(VHS - I’m old) with the matches where Denmark participated. Even though we knew the results, we watched the matches with great enthusiasm. Wonderful!

I especially love one scene from the movie (perhaps not easy to understand for English speakers without subtitles). The moment from the training pitch the day before the final, Richard sees John Faxe practising his shooting technique that he thinks is the way to go. Richard explaines him what he's not good at, which players he shouldn't compete with and then why he was selected for the team (running, makes the things work, never gives up etc). But - if the ball comes to him in the right position, he expects him to shoot. "BUT LOOK AT YOUR LACES WHEN SHOOTING". Real story. It actually did pay off in the final. Really good actors btw.

There was a party all over the country. It was a magical time, from game to game, we probably didn't think we had a chance, but we did it. Had the chance a few time to greet Richard Møller Nielsen at matches in Svendborg when he came by. He was a trainer for SFB before I was born, but he came to matches there still, it really speaks to his personality and a great OB trainer and honoured him with naming the Fan section "Richard Møller Nielsen Tribunen", also the square outside is named after him.

Yes, that summer WAS special. For me it even had some extra dimensions. First of all, the summer started very early and lasted ten weeks straight, except for a single day of showers in June. I remember the first hot day very much: The 13th May was just a typical late spring day, around 20 Centigrade but dry. The 14th May, however, was completely different. I had to (well, chose to) cycle from Copenhagen to Odense for my grandmother's 87th birthday the next day. When I took off it was almost 30 Centigrade, and after the 110 + 25 Km due west, the left side of my body was toast. A few days later I cycled back home in the still hot weather, getting my oteher side toasted just as much. Then I stayed home for a couple of weeks, preparring for my exams, taking an occasional ride to oxidize my brain, On one of those rides I stopped over at the Bellevue beach, striped of my cycling clothes except for the bib-shorts (which looked like an old-fashinoned bathing suit for men due to the suspenders) and dove in. That must have been a sight. At the beginning of June I biked back to Fyn, this time for my father's birthday, then went back to do my exams and then biked back to Fyn once more on the way to Silkeborg to do a summer course in freshwater biology and happened to watch Denmark winning the final. On the way to Silkeborg I visited the two small Danish islands Samsø and Tunø, and after the freshwater course I went back to Fyn to take care of my father's house while he was on a camping trip. Then I went back home a week later and then headed for Poland (no bike this time), and Latvia for three weeks, still on 35+ Centigrade temps. Only on the very last day in Poland on the way back home the weather had changed to 15 Centigrade and rain. That summer WAS magic. First there was the "No" to the European Union despite all the recommandations from the politicians. Then there was the smashing good weather for so long time which is quite rare so close to the Atlantic Ocean, and then there was the European Soccer Championship against all odds for an unprepared team that got in on a cancellation, even under a coach that was considered to be outright incompetent. That summer everything clicked, and luckily I was there to experience it. I'm not a soccer fan (cycling is my sport). But of course I had to watch this historic event, and of course I celebrated like everybody else.

Its great you have visited Sønderborg, its and Dybbøl Mølle - the danes fought against a really strong army from Preussia, and lost trying to defend our land, and the constituion called grundloven, which was made around 15 years before, and was the start of how Denmark is developed into today. If I may, I will suggest you to visit Skagen, the most northern city in Jylland, and watch the sunset up there, its a very good almost spiritual experience, and somehow the ligth up there is breathtaking.

I was 18 at the time. And after we won, we went and got my dad who was watching it at a friends house. Back then most of my dads buisness were with Germany, and when we got there he was calling all his business contacts teasing them relentlesly .When we got to town everybody was partying up a storm and we joined in. I remember getting apocalyptically drunk and kissing more girls than I have ever done. I think that it was the first time I had a 2 day hangover.

Very cool. But the wildest scenes were the celebrations when the team returned. Only the people who had been around when WW2 ended had ever seen something similar.

I'm one of the lucky ones, who managed to get tickets for one of the Euro group matches in Parken. Obviously we didn't know if we actually got to go, and I know lots of people got their tickets cancelled because of capacity restrictions, but I finally got the confirmation from UEFA about a week ago that my tickets to Denmark-Finland are still valid. It probably won't be as crazy as it was back in 1992 (still jealous of my brother, who actually was there in the stadium for both Denmark's semifinal and final), but right now I'm just happy to be going at all.

Super jealous! Have fun! We had a lottery at work for the first match with 4 tickets available, no luck for me. I am holding out hope they will have similar ones for other matches at Parken. Fingers crossed :). We went to the last Euro cup in France. We saw England/Iceland (one of the best matches ever) and Poland/Portugal. My wallet was stolen on the way to the second one on a train in Marseille, took away from my enjoyment of the match itself.

The summer of '92, is like the Kennedy assasination. Everyone know where they were, and what they did. I was 14 years old, went downtown. entered a bar, ordered a beer, no one cared about age that evening.

I was at work at Lyngby Station Kiosk during the final (had it as a study job), when we closed at 22, I went to Rådhuspladsen, it was crazy, people everywhere. The McDonalds visit is real, so is the minigolf, and it has since then been a theme on later tournaments, not doing it, but remembering to 'decompress' during tournament. The licorice root, I've never understood, but you should not bite it, just chew it :-)

Just a quick suggestion: Do a video on the chants that are used on the station: - "Vi er røde vi er hvide - vi står sammen sid' om side" - "Sejler op af åen og vi sejler nedad igen" - "1 - 2 - 3; Schemeichel er en mur" Etc etc, Ps. Love your video's og channel - Big thumbs up :-)

I have heard that people tell foreigners to watch the 24 part series "Matador" which takes place in the 1930's to 1940s I think. My GF's cousin's polish wife loved in. It's from the 80's and can be bought on DVD and maybe even blu-ray.

Yeah. The best thing about the movie is that it’s totally based on what happened that summer. McD, mini golf, wife on their room prior to final did happen. it is almost a self-written script. Sadly that means that it was also true that RMN never get the fame he deserved for his hard work until very late in his life. A monument can be seen in front of Odense Stadion, and the main tribune are named after him, for his glory days in OB and winning EURO Cup.

Lakridsrod is the root of the plant Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra), and do not grow naturally in Europe, but is a medicinal plant imported all the way back before the viking age. Normally you just chew on the root, after your saliva enzymes breaks down the active ingredients. If you swallov it before the reaction, it is not effective. It takes a few minutes, and the taste of bark will vanish. Licorice effects the Mucous membranes, and helps with opening the nose and throath when you have an infection. It is also quite laxative, especcially if you swallow parts of the root...I learned that lesson several times as a child before I wised up. I guess it became more popular in scandinavia in modern times, because of the many stuffed noses and bad throaths we have in this climate. When someone realized that ammonium chloride (salmiak) had a similar effect and boosted the effects of licorize, our tradition with salty salmiak lakrids was born. The salt was added to help with dehydration, and as a traditional cough sirup, it is quite effective. I was watching the finale in '92 in what was called Grøn Scene on the Roskilde Festival. Just after we went to Orange Scene and watched Nirvana. Only the germans were grunging, everybody else was singing happy songs over the Cobain misery. We left before the concert ended, and took a taxi alle the way back to Copenhagen to party alle the night in front of City Hall, and we just stayed on the inner city streets with our backpacks for the next three days partying. I love your interest and dedication to learn about the culture youre now living in, and your videos has made many of my days better. Hope to catch you on the streets someday, and welcome you in person. Stay happy, healthy and Young.
