Aslan & I continue our steady climb of the 9 locks at Napton, with the tiny hamlet of Marston Doles at the top.
Here we arrive at the highest point of the Oxford Canal - every lock from now on being downhill, all the way to the canal terminus at Oxford.
After the locks, the canal begins to take on an extremely twisty and winding course, as it follows the natural contours of the surrounding landscape.

We will never tire of the chug chug chug of Aslan. One of the first channels we watched in our ‘planning phase’ of our own life aboard. Two years in and still no regrets. If anyone is on the fence about making the move, just do it. Life is too short for what ifs. 👍

I couldn’t agree with you more; if the media says that the people overwhelmingly agree on an issue, it’s always the exact opposite! I won’t watch mainstream media and haven’t for years because they’re all bought and paid for liars. The trip today was absolutely beautiful with all the rolling hills and the farm animals! Thanks for another awesome Friday, Kevin!

I love watching Aslan navigate the locks and bridges; and your historical facts of sites we see. You seem to have the knack of thinking on your feet in every situation! I know I could never drive a Narrowboat. I admire that you chucked it all and bought Aslan. Not many of us are smart enough to do what makes us happy. And I am forcing myself to watch the commercials so you can get revenue. (Also I won’t ask about your religion).

Another great video Kevin; love seeing you and Aslan chugging through our beautiful country. The little Westland Wasp helicopter was an added bonus .. only a couple of those left flying .. I remember seeing them down at the Portland Naval base (sadly long gone) back in early 1970’s at one of their open days … these little helicopters were sent to sea on the frigates of the day. Sad to see the continued destruction of our countryside by the “white elephant” vanity project HS2.. wish they would stop the first stage now the rest has been shelved! Living in Aylesbury, Bucks have this monstrosity right on my doorstep.. just a few yards from my home .. having them working through the night re-aligning the track down to Princes Risborough to let HS2 pass underneath .. Bucks has been torn apart for no reason now … I doubt you will ever get to Aylesbury even though we do have a branch of The Grand Union Canal that finishes in the town .. used to love walking with my border collie Pepsi along the tow path .. sadly she passed away on Tuesday (10/10/23) at grand old age of 14 & 1/2.

Thank you Wayne. Yes there's some uncertain times ahead for canal users. If everyone refused to pay the license, I imagine CRT would diversify into the 'cranage and scrapping of boats' business.
@bren106
@bren106 9 ай бұрын
If every boater refused to pay their fees locks and banks would slowly degrade until they fail, canals wouldn't get dredged, fallen trees wouldn't be removed and no armco would be maintained. And when a catastrophic failure occurs, as happened in Cheshire a couple of years back, who would repair and make the network whole again?

Rules for life: Don’t trust a pseudo tipi. Don’t moor under a sappy tree. Don’t get ahead of yourself but don’t lag too far behind, either. Don’t assume good Armco(sic?) is good mooring. Don’t leave lamb chops on the counter all day. Flying South for the winter is usually a good thing. Don’t take KZfaq comments too seriously.

It occurs to me that the canals were the HS2 of the day. I can just imagine some farmer, standing on the edge of the dig, chewing on his pipe and scowling at the diggers. "By god, I don' reckon much to this here arty-fishul river. Tearin' up the countryside, jus' to get their goods t'market faster. Havent they ever heard of good ol' horse and cart? It worked for me grandfather, and my father, and it works for me!"

I'd say you're right, though I can't imagine in 200 years time people will be looking at a few hundred miles of beige concrete, in the same way the canals are viewed today?

That's very possible. But HS2 could be done better. Rather than bury it in tunnels, driving the cost up so high that now the whole North wont see the benefit, they could have dug trenches to lower the track into the landscape, and planted hedges on either side. In effect, hiding the track. But everyone always wants to do building in the faster, less-effort way.

Just yesterday, I was reading about when the Chesterfield Canal was being built It was one of the first canals of the Industrial Revolution. People weren't sure it would make money, which reminds me of a lot of Internet commenters on new projects today. :) They also called it a "stillwater canal", because there had been boats all along, but it was amazing that now they wouldn't have to fight the current. What they were particularly scared of was tunnels; a boat going into a tunnel, disappearing under all the fields and what-not, and emerging miles away was very strange to them. On the other hand, many were eager for the trade advantages the canals would bring. The Chesterfield runs parallel to the Rother for quite a way, so why didn't they use the Rother? It was because the Rother was the route by which South Yorkshire coal reached its markets, and its merchants were the ones who set the tolls. The canal's promoters aimed to market Derbyshire coal in competition. ;) I got most of this from a little book called Norwood Tunnel by Christine Richardson, published by the Chesterfield Canal Trust
