Travels With Geordie

Күн бұрын

This week I share a little about my plans. And a little about how I got to where I am now. Planning a round the world Land Rover road trip, cruising America's great loop, then the European rivers.
Every week I'll also introduce a beer of the week, sharing some of my favorite, and not so favorite beers.
Travels With Geordie T shirts!
I've set up an online store where you can pick up the Travels With Geordie T shirt in all sizes, even toddlers!

Travels With Geordie. A weekly video series about wooden boat restoration and liveaboard life for Peter Knowles and his dog, Geordie.
My day job is design and 3D visualization of custom homes.
If you're interested,...bit.ly/2AGi1wH
Some viewers may be interested in some previous videos about Land Rovers. They're at my previous channel, Riverport Rovers.
bit.ly/2Bm7IOW
Here is the build series about my truck. A rather modified Series II Land Rover.
bit.ly/2ziYQbv
I rather silly build and road trip to the famous Land Rover Winter Romp in Maine.
bit.ly/2zjtPUW
A slightly less silly road trip to Cape Breton that does involve painting flames on a Land Rover.
bit.ly/2KlEKBx
The series that started it all. A crazy plan to build a Land Rover in one day from assorted bits lying around.
bit.ly/2Qa9rPD
There's a few other videos that might be of interest at Riverport Rovers including the beginning of a Boler trailer refit.

Hello Peter and Geordie, Scott Stapf here, I have enjoyed your videos very much for many months now on your living and restoration of your Monk Cruiser. I especially enjoyed this most recent video because you gave us your plans for future travel, how you arrived where you are ....fantastic! I, like you, find wooden boats one of mans most beautiful creations. I have always wanted to do as you are doing but it is most difficult today to meet anyone who has the experience and techniques needed to own and maintain a wooden boat especially since I live in Florida and the big worry in the southern oceans are the toredo worms. For many years though, here in florida and throughout the Bahamas and Caribbean, the boats, until the late 1960's all were wooden boats so I know there must be known techniques to prevent these things from entering the wood of the hull of the boat. I was very excited to hear of your plans of eventually shipping your boat to the great lakes and traveling from there down to the gulf and possibly the florida coast. I am very interested to find out your plans for preventing the toredos and whether a wormshoe and anti-fouling paint will suffice for the needed protection. I couldn't possibly tell you of the missed opportunities of beautiful wooden boats that I have not invested in simply because of lack of knowledge on how to preserve and maintain one. The first very beautiful boat was what was called a Chrisovitch, she was 33 ft. and would have made a beautiful sport fishing boat. She was very waterlogged in the timbers under her decks and of course, I really didn't know much about how to tackle that job my being a new captain and maybe 23 years old. Next, there was another sportfishing boat called a Norseman... this one was 42 ft. and the owners had most of the deck planking removed and wanted to sell it. The stories go on and on and I am so glad you decided to document and publish the work you are doing, it is very much appreciated. As an example of how much your videos help those of us who love wooden boats, I remember looking at them and when a surveyor would say some sections would probably need refastening. This of course, sounds like a horrifying and daunting task, but the planking that you refastened, wasn't that big of a job at all and in fact looked very manageable. So thank you again Peter, for publishing the work you are doing, Have a Very Merry Christmas to you and yours....CHEERS!

Sweet boat and enjoy watching and hearing your story. I spent over a couple of years as the service manager at a dealer with 34 foot fiberglass our premium line, but 14 different companies to file warranty to. To increase the amount reimbursed for warranty a few dollars, I could take a tech a go to Tennessee (19 boat builders in that state) and spent 2 days at one plant. As a car geek, it was still fascinating to watch everything made in house. Each part, Hull, power plant, electrical harness, cabinet, etc., was produced simultaneously in three buildings to come together without a single wrong part. The hull was fitted as the top was fitted, side by side. Then a completed boat was ready for test drive completing the check list, cleaned & shrink wrapped for shipping or brief storage. Amazing! We had a Dr. retired, but owned a boat similar to yours. All original but thousands in “Teak” wood. Head, Birth, galley, helm all similar names but a lot of equipment including generator and so on. I can tell your feeling for Geordie by the tone and slight changes in your voice. I truly with possible wishes, hope Geordie is with you another five years. I don’t know this videos date, but my prayers are wish you. I had an out of town job, 28 year old son save a dog from two pot-heads that was beating it. I had a female German Short hair and things happened. She had 6 black labs boys and one girl with black circles around the eyes but mostly white. All of the dogs except for one went to people we knew had good homes. The last dog was missing his right eye. Damaged I believe by his mom’s toe nail feeding the new horns 5 days before they opened their eyes. 30 days after 60th, he ate a treated bone someone threw over the fence. He died two days later as he was going quick. His only fault was barking or looking thru a tall wood fence, very short to the public. I can’t do that again, so I wish you and your beautiful boat & pet the best of life for all, including you. Love the craftsmanship that went into these old boats. It is wonderful that you can make what you need, inside and out. Freedom is hard to come by. This includes what you care about, the funds to get by and you health. Enjoy!

Excellent as always, your videos are very informative and inspiring. I'd rather watch your videos than the junk on tv. Truthfully I never watch anything on tv, as it's very exciting waiting for your next episode. Your videos are very well thought out and editing is good, and I find them uplifting. I am very thankful to you, for posting and sharing your lifestyle with us folk on here, we all need to move forward, especially after broken relationships etc..after all, we can't fix yesterday, but we can sort tomorrow. very positive thinking, Peter, that's what you have shared with us, by sharing your videos. Good one, Patrick. My boat gives me a place away where I can think and have hope. I've been sick and I've given up on my 22 marriage, but the boat is always there faithfully waiting for my return. That is why I connect with this boating channel, there is a place for me. I have my commitments, but in four years I'm done. In the meantime, I'm fixing up my old boat and taking boating classes. These things make me feel good and keep up my positive attitude..

You are doing a great job on your videos. I watch you for the wood boat restoration, SV Basik for the composite restoration, SV Delos for the vacation fun factor, and Sailing Sophisticated Lady for the antics of Captain Rick. LOL. All are very different, but all have to do with boats and boating. Keep up the good work. You never know, a collaboration of one or two other KZfaq'rs could push your sub count much higher and get you to the point where it covers your expenses. Oh, and not all your viewers are as old or older than you! :)

I get to watch the next 3 years play out. Pretty, stoked. The boat? You're "Bob Ross-ing" the hell out of it. The pace of the videos, is spot on. I came all the way back from the playlist, just to comment. Had to. Cheers.

She doesn't want to leave NS and I can't see leaving new england except to go farther south to warmer weathe. I have a great interest in doing The Great Loop and have read several books by people who've completed it already. I have a 50 year old wooden boat and I'm putting a new motor in it this spring. Hey Peter mate...., I have loved all of your videos so far and my hat is off to you for keeping Geordie til he passes away.... we have 3 cats (I am 68 and Margaret, my partner, is 80, and from Canada) and the oldest cat, Maximillian)Max for short will be 10 years old on December 27th so I know where you are coming from with Geordie. We live in Whyalla, South Australia and are "riding the train to the end of the line" as Margaret has kidney cancer and is too high a risk for surgery. We were going to travel around Australia but Margaret needs to stay near her doctor so we just do random day trips around Whyalla. We wish you and your friend a very Merry Christmas and an awesome New Year and big hugs to Geordie mate!!!!.

It is almost the visualization of a fantasy because for me it is, I’m a colombian entering middle age without the slightest possibility of doing what you have done and continue to do, yes I admit it there is some envy in my words but why not?. I have seen chronologically the videos of this channel, until yesterday I discovered the one of the Land Rover that I also began to follow. I was encouraged to write this comment basically because I felt when I saw him that I should express my sincere admiration, man, what he does is spectacular, I will continue watching the channel until I catch up and we will see what has happened. It has some kind of grace because it is like speaking to you through time and well paradoxes of technology I suppose. For now I have nothing more to say without starting to feel strange, cheers.

I love your channel and your plans for the future. It is very inspiring and motivational. Will be happy to support you. Maybe you should think about starting with Patreon early as it takes time to build the customer base. Also, think about letting people buy your t-shirt. There are many people that will love to buy it and support you.

Thanks so much Ofer. Yes, I’ve been amazed by the support for the Patreon idea. I will likely start that soon. I’m planning a major channel upgrade at episode 100. The shirts are available for sale now with details in the description. Sadly I’ve only had one sale. I’ll have to give up on the shirt giveaways in the new year.

Really happy that you are now caught up and current. Your content is always compelling. As for monetizing your channel; how about sponsorships and product placements in your videos? They would give you the ability to choose companies you really want to support. Your exposure could help smaller, more ethically-minded businesses that provide quality products and services compete against giant corporations. I have seen some of these types of sponsorships done tastefully. Just a thought.

Great vid. Wish you the best in your dreams. One way to fund your dreams is to work on the tall ships, I got to spend 9 months on the wooden Bounty in Euroup. Amazing sailing and travels. Also in Euroup they like the engineers to be ummm older like us. There are some amazing ships out there. Most of the job are 6 months. Great furball ,shipsmate you have there. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your pup

Captain Peter ! Patrick John wrote a very succinct note and there isn’t much I would add to his sentiments. I also much prefer your video episodes to television or even the new movies. It is comforting to know that your future plans will have us all vicariously part of your crew for some years to come. Please do consider Patreon or similar as your funding source. I also am one who hates having to suffer through advertising and would much rather have a “subscription” to your channel. I will gladly support your videos and, through those, your travels. Please don’t feel that your videos need more polish or professional shine. What you are giving us now is honest, very entertaining, humorous, educational and leaves me with a sense of participation. Good stuff, all. And, so... Merry Christmas to you, Geordie and the mysterious Captain of MV Zephorus

Hi Peter. Great to hear your plans. We bought our boat in New York whilst living in Ireland. The Time has come to ship her home, well sort of home. Plans are afoot to ship her from Florida to Genoa next May. We will do our boating in the Med. It is a much easier commute for us. I will be taking pics of the trip and if you are interested I can email them to you. Please please please put Ireland on your travel plans, you will be treated to a nice dinner and accommodation should you need it. Keep up the good work and see you next week. Sean
