I love visiting Kansas ghost towns and I found some really interesting ones for this video. We start in Bushong where there are a lot of great old historic buildings in the downtown area. Then we head to Canada (Kansas that is). From there we head to Aulne with a brief stop at the Marion County Poor Farm - both of which have fascinating histories. Fun trip around Lyon and Marion County!

That war memorial in Bushong is a very impressive structure. It goes to show that patriotism is not dead in many places in the US. I would love to see that some day. Thank you again for a great video Coach, looking forward to the next one!

I grew up in and around many small towns. And have spent my motorcycling years running through and exploring them. Just as with people, each small town has it's own personality and history. Some are so rundown or decayed that I have almost left in tears. Those that are yet vibrant, I leave happy and upbeat. I just think back to the time that each were still alive with people, their lives, and of businesses. I got to experience what it was like in my early years as a small farm boy in southeast Iowa , and seeing these small towns bustling with life and activity will remain in my mind. To come to town from the farm to shop, or "to do our trading" as my folks said, and socialize was a looked forward to event. And was a special treat. Especially the evening visits when we shopped at a town's weekly night that they stayed open for business. Then a special treat such as an ice cream cone or a frosted mug root beer, and we were off for home, with thoughts of the grand night we had just had. Oh, for only a time machine! I would go back in an instant.

Interesting small towns. I know exactly how you feel when that train went through, as I live in a town, that's near a railroad with a train going through all the time, day and night. It's especially hard to talk to anyone, when it goes through, blowing it's horn. One story I heard was that an older couple, at a town meeting, thought they could get the city to ask the train company if they could get the trains to not blow their horn at night, when the train was going through town. Didn't work. Thank you for the trip. Happy trails to you and God bless.

Loved the video 😊 I’m friends with the owner of the Marion County Poor Farm. We helped her clean up the inside. Vandals have broke windows and have been stealing her personal belongings. This house has so much history. North of the house is a two story civil war lookout made of limestone just like the house. I have so many pictures of the inside. It’s heartbreaking to see it in its current state with the roof leaking and damaging the inside. Just be careful, it is private property. She sometimes gives private tours when the weather isn’t too hot or too cold since there isn’t any ac or heating.

Beautiful memorial, may none of our service people ever be forgotten for the sacrifices they made for our freedom. Fitting segment for July. Also, the FLINTS HILL NATURE TRAIL is just to the south of town and there is amble parking to use.

As to towns named after famous people, in southern Oklahoma, near Ardmore, there is a small town named "Gene Autry" after the movie star. He is from the area and at one time it was thought he might move back to a ranch he had bought near the town. So the name of the town was changed to "Gene Autry" from "Lou". However, he never moved back, so the change was in vain.

The thing about the baseball players comes up a lot and Bushong was the only town I found that fit the bill. There was a ghost town down the railroad named Comisky that was part of the baseball lore. It was at Road A and Road 335, on the county line with Morris County. I saw a photo of the depot and I read they had a stock yard there. There's a cemetery north of the site, too. Keep up the good work!

Hello, I am very familiar with The Mariam Co. Poor Farm. I thought I’d shed some light on the grave marked “Negro Boy.” The cemetery there was not only for the farm but all of the county’s poor and unknowns. There were many unknowns in the days before genetic identification. The child or young man in that grave found frozen to death on a boxcar in the nearby town of Mariam, he had nothing on his person to identify him unfortunately. The townsfolk wanted to make sure he had a proper burial and stone which he was given as depicted.

I live in Florence seen your video of that it was ok. I have been to the Marion co. Poor farm and cemetery. They used to give a tour during Halloween. Years ago when I used to work at Florence Health care nursing home I would take residents on a drive because they wanted to see it. It is supposed to be haunted. Everytime I drove by that place I got a flat tire. Lots of ghost stories from these little towns.
