Maldivian, also known by its endonym Dhivehi or Divehi is an Indo-Aryan language spoken in the South Asian island country of Maldives. The official and common language of Maldives is Dhivehi or Maldivian, an Indo-Aryan language closely related to the Sinhala language of Sri Lanka. The first known script used to write Dhivehi is the eveyla akuru script, which is found in the historical recording of kings (raadhavalhi). Dhivehi is a descendant of Elu Prakrit and is closely related to Sinhalese, but not mutually intelligible with it. Many languages have influenced the development of Dhivehi through the ages. They include Arabic, Urdu/Hindustani, Persian, Tamil, French, Portuguese, and English. The Maldivian language has four notable dialects. The standard dialect is that of the capital city of Malé. The greatest dialectal variation exists in the southern atolls of Huvadhu, Addu and Fuvahmulah. Each of these atolls has its own distinct dialect often thought to be interconnected with each other while being widely different from the dialect spoken in the northern atolls. The southern dialects are so distinct that those only speaking northern dialects cannot understand them. There is Madifushi dialect also which is the lesser known dialect in the Madifushi island of Kolhumadulu and has some similarities with Huvadhu dialect. Word-final 'a' is often replaced with 'e' or 'o', and some final consonants also differ. Now most of the Lakshadweep islanders speak Malayalam. Mahi (or Mahl), which is akin to old Sinhalese, is spoken on Minicoy, however. Some people also speak Hindi. The population is concentrated mostly on the islands of Andrott, Kavaratti, Minicoy, and Amini. Jeseri (also known as Dweep Bhasha) is also a language, spoken in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep in India. Jeseri is the primary as well as the widely spoken native language in the territory. The word 'Jeseri' derives from Arabic word Jazari (جزري) which means 'Islander' or 'of island'. Most of the population speaks Jeseri with Dhivehi being the most spoken language in Minicoy island. Jeseri dialect is spoken in the inhabited islands of archipelago, namely Amindivi and Laccadive Islands, with an exception of the southernmost island of Minicoy, where the Mahl dialect is used. The Ponnani script of Malayalam was used to write Jeseri until the British Raj. The culture is almost similar to that of Mappilas in the nearest mainland state of Kerala. The modern Malayalam Grandha are the scripts that are in use in the islands. Vattezhuthu is the oldest script also used in the islands (Now, modern script of Malayalam also known as Grandha is replaced the older script of Vattezhuthu). With the arrival of Islam, the Arabic script became eminent among the people, mainly for the study of Quran.
