In this week's guitar lesson I'll show you how to learn travis picking technique from scratch if this is entirely new for your picking hand.
This was inspired by a song request I had from a Skype student recently. The song requested was 'Just Breathe' by Pearl Jam and it's a great study in the travis picking style with alternating thumb bass notes and the fingers picking in between the thumb picks.
This is a very methodical approach gradually building up the fingerpicking patterns. I always insist on using the metronome to ensure you keep good time and as a way to easily monitor your progression with each practice session.
Take your time at each stage and gradually build the speed until you reach the target tempo.
The biggest takeaway from this lesson is to be musical as you practice your picking technique (or indeed any technique). The important this is to repeat and repeat a picking pattern so it becomes instinctive. The best way to do this is to keep playing one particular travis picking pattern in the picking hand but change the chords or notes within the chord so you don't get bored!

I'm 63 and was trained classically on piano at age 3. Through my travels I picked up several other instruments(guitar, flute, violin), and was extremely fortunate to always be around musicians who were by far better then I could ever hope to be!! I was married to a self-taught guitarist who showed me a tremendous amount on the guitar and helped me with techniques etc...I never knew there was a name for this style of playing/picking!! Ry, you just opened an entire world to me!! TY so very, very much., Your teaching style is perfect for my "learning" style! May only great thins come your way! :)

I really liked this video. Weirdly in my 12 years of playing I haven’t used a click track. I just recently took part in a song of my cousins and recorded my part within the first 2 takes. I was breathing too loud at first haha. That’s the change I had to make and take 2 was the one he used in his final recorded version. For any guitarist learn about rhythm and how to count as you play. The number 8 is a good number. I tend to stay in 4:4 timing.

I like the way you teach it. Emphasizing the metranome is really important, and I like how you add an "ingredient" to the piece as you go along. I sometimes just want to work on it until sounds good and then call it good. The exercise science guy in me goes nuts when people use the term muscle memory though. Muscles don't remember, they just contract and relax. The cerebellum tells the hand what to do. I'm still gonna subscribe. I think I can learn a lot from you. Thanks.

I learned the "Hard" way that nails are not A must for Travis Picking. Walking my pup Betty,I would tote a plastic grocery bag to do my part to police up her "Duty" as every quality person does for our neighborhood. Eating my lunch after ,I had realized my thumb nail cut through the bag(against ground) and eating my lunch apple noticed my nail was absolutely filled with Chyte. To this day I keep them short..(True story)

But here's the question: these are indeed patterns, where the fingers always follow the pattern whilst the chords change. How do you keep the thumb going while you use the fingers to pick out syncopated melodies---- rather than regimented patterns? That is what I cannot accomplish
@GradyElla
@GradyElla 2 жыл бұрын
Why won't my brain let my fingers do this? Soon as I try to change the chord, my right hand gets all out of sequence. It happens every damn time! Wish there was some magic pill I could take that would overcome this block. I can change chords on time when strumming and have been able to do that for over 40 years! Why is this so GD hard? This is such a basic part of accompanying someone and it holds back my musical progress so much. Am I the only person that struggles with this?

Ry, rule number 1. Never, ever have a finger resting on the soundboard. There is no need and it restricts your right hand movement and leaves you with one finger less to play with. Remember thumb for the three base strings and three fingers each for the three treble strings. This was my first lesson when I was thought to play 40 odd years ago. See Tim Nicoli or Steve Hicks for ex.

@raymonddixon7603
@raymonddixon7603 2 жыл бұрын
@@patrickmorgan4006 Well can you name a purpose. If you look closely at Chet he only uses his first and second finger, he is not inclined to use his third finger because his pinky prohibits it's use. If you look at Joe he moves his right around because he can get different sounds on different sides of the soundhole. If you were taught classically that is one of the things you are taught. Nearer the bridge hard sound, nearer the fretboard soft sound. Every player has his blind spot. Chet is one of my favourite players and I have learned a lot from him.
