Just FYI, I am a 75-year-old relearner, and I am obsessed with learning travis picking and watch every KZfaq clip by any teacher but I find your tutorials and great manner the absolute best. Thanks for your clips.

Nicely Done! There are lots of videos on each style, but it is rare to find someone who demonstrates the practical differences in the two styles. This was very helpful and helped answer some questions I had about these styles. Thanks for putting this out there!

Travis picking is based on turn of the century piano playing learned from white players who learned from black players who traveled from New Orleans to Kentucky and from them Merle Travis picked up his style. The thumb is the left hand, playing the bass note on the 1st and 3rd beat while hitting the block chord on the 2nd and 4th beat, the fingers play the melody like the right hand on the piano. Travis hit the bass hard on the 2nd and 4th beats causing his thumb to hit more than one string, while using only his index finger for the melody notes. Blues and ragtime rhythms are the natural effect of this style. Travis used sophisticated jazz chords and complex melodies and also muted his bass strings

Great video.... thanks for sharing...I do some Travis picking as I can improvise my chord fingering to suit the patterns I play...I have arthritis in my left hand & have difficulty fingering some chords... cheers from 78 yr old player...😀

How about maybelle Carter guitar playing technique? Im pretty guitar was anyway built with the intent that the strings would be plucked by our fingers, but now there are individual techniques named after some guitarists. Thd umbrella term is Fingerstyle guitar but even then there are so many people naming them differently.

turns out i've been travis picking the entire time. i was always taught that ring finger gets 1st, middle gets 2nd, index gets 3rd, then thumb gets 4,5,6.

Practise. For ages. Start slowly and build up speed gradually. Eventually it becomes automatic. Then practise again to eliminate all the bad habits your fingers have picked up while you've been focusing on your thumb. Then keep practising. Start with simple songs, then gradually try more complex ones. Watch dozens of YT videos by players such as Merle Travis, Thom Bresh, Chet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Tommy Emmanuel, Richard Smith, etc at reduced speeds until you get at least some of it. Make up some of your own tunes. Health warning: Don't do all of the above in front of other family members or friends, or they will eventually try to kill you.

I think, almost sure, that with both 'traditional fingerstyle' as 'Travis picking', the thumb plays on strings 4, 5, and 6. The difference is that with 'Travis picking' the index finger plays all the other three strings, whereas with 'traditional fingerstyle' the index finger plays string 3, NOT string 4 as you show, the middle finger plays string 2, NOT string 3 as you show, and the ring finger plays string 1, NOT string 2 as you show. You should watch videos of some professional guitarists, or read a book on the subject, then re-do your charts. I am sure that you mean well, but as it is now, you are way off base, and it should be embarrassing to you.

Not Travis picking at all. Travis picking consists of Thiumpicked bass, muted with the palm of your hand to create the illusion of a band with seperate sounding muted bass and accompaniment using the thumb pick and one ore two fingers only playing syncopated melody. What you are describing in this video is just two ordinary versions of the same thing,plain folk picking. look up Merle Travis , his son Tom breach , Chet Atkins and the amazing Tommy Emmanuel. You need to research before you put out information which is incorrect to unsuspecting people who want to learn the correct method of playing. They will think they are playing Merle Travis style and are actually playing ordinary folk guitar picking

I think David has done a great job simplifying the different types of finger picking. Beginners need less information. Travis picking for me uses the thumb for the three top strings. Whether I palm mute the bass strings depends on the song. I think David didn’t use the top string 6. Because you have to either alternate your thumb between the C and G notes. Or change your fingering of the C chord to include the 6th sting G. That is slightly complicated for a beginner. David is such a great teacher because unlike many he resists the temptation to showboat all the time. He knows he’s a great guitarist but showboating gets in the way of simplifying guitar. You are technically correct, but people starting out will find out pretty quickly there is more to Travis picking. You have to start somewhere. This video will help a lot of people at the start of their playing. Cheers
