In this video I talk about what I've done to improve the cornering speed of my 2WD Slash and also help to correct the issue of the rear wheel lifting which kills acceleration coming out of a corner.
I also talk about how the Slash has a superior weight bias compared to the Bandit and Rustler, due to its battery being centrally located between the front and rear wheels. I may modify my Bandit to allow the battery to sit further forward by a half inch or so. This should help allot by getting some of the weight off the back wheels.

If you want your weight more even, you can always move the battery mount foam to the back so you can slide the battery forward

I have a slash ultimate 4x4 and 2wd brushless. They both are great! Especially with proline badlands or trenchers! My recommendation to anyone. Set the suspension coils to about 12-14mm space between coil and shock cap, and use 3rd bottom hole on front arm, and 4th bottom hole on rear arm, and inner most hole for top shock mounts for both front and rear. TSM between 40-60% works best. 25% steering sensitivity (makes turning a little less twitchy). Other settings stock! Voltage LVC warning to 10.7v on lipo, and temp warning at 185F. I run mine 3s 5000mah. Proline badlands. Handles beautifully. It is Traxxas BEST handling platform for off-road, without a doubt. If your rustler or Maxx handles “better”, you obviously have not correctly tuned your Slash.

Thanks for posting - just got my slash on the weekend after 32 years since having my last RC car. Boy what a difference. Plastic got better don't you know! I'm still "savouring" it and still running on 50% "training" mode.... it's that good, why go faster!!!!! I think you make a lot valid comments on the stock parts. I actually think they are very good. The slash was made for dirt/off road driving and not tarmac. If I took a 1963 land rover around a formula 1 race track, I'd be very disappointed with it's lap time (it would probably break down if I'm honest!). I take that same Land Rover through a boggy field to meet a sexy young laydee at the other side with a canoe, a picnic, and chilled wine waiting next to a lake and the guy in the lambo would be cursing you as you paddle off to the sunset! It's all relative as to what you want the RC car to do. I notice you've not mentioned or recommended the top shock mount popping out and not put on alu top mounts? I guess you don't jump it too much? All other "upgrade" videos on here say this is a MUST! I was considering bulking up the shock / cap thread with PTFE tape to get a better purchase.... I'll only replace parts once I've broken them and at 50% speed..... easy does it! Cheers.

Thanks for the comment! I do actually jump this truck allot. I haven't had any issues with the shock caps popping off on mine. But I jump and land on dirt. The highest I've ever had this Slash was maybe 5 feet in the air as the stock Brushed motor won't really get enough speed up for anything crazy. Even then the truck bottomed out before anything could happen. I have upgraded to aluminum shock caps because they're cheap enough and do make a difference in durability. Also hat the time of this video I was running the Traxxas "Big Bore" shocks which are basically Aluminum Ultra shocks with Stronger shock shafts. I've taken those shocks and put them on my Rustler VXL since the Rustler will make better use of them.

@@spadds To be honest I've just been sticking with the stock tires. They're fine for what I drive on. But recently I actually started to run Rustler 2WD rear tires on the front and back. This way I can swap them out to even out tire wear. I race some friends on a baseball field and the stock Slash tires just don't grip well on that surface. The Rustler rear wheels have allot more grip on a slippery surface like that and they also fit perfectly! I did have to adjust my rear camber a slight bit to make them fit under the wheel wells when the suspension compresses.

haha loved the small roast in this video, totally agreed. The problem I have with the slash is that for some reason the suspension is insanely stiff, like it reacts very slow, it uses same shocks and springs as the rustler and I upgraded to your same shocks, but it is still the same. Good vid
@RobertNES816
@RobertNES816 Жыл бұрын
The springs are actually different on the slash. They're progressive springs. The rustler uses constant rate springs. The stock suspension is supposed to mimick a real SC truck, so it has very slow body roll and soft suspension which does nothing for the HCG chassis.
@gatorage850
@gatorage850 Жыл бұрын
@@RobertNES816 "progressive springs" Well i think it's more of a dual rate spring but the problem with them is they over-rebound on jump. If you adjust the oil for the soft rate of the spring (where it sits most of the time) when you hit a bump or jump too hard it will throw the truck. in racing sometimes you can't hit the jump at full speed or it will long dart (nose down). for this reason, i can never recommend running dual rate spring in the rear. in the front you can get away with it (it's easier to save a nose high car) also, can't remember if the slash has adjustable roll-center but if it dose you can run a soft front and raise the front roll-center (no need to change springs). this will let the outside wheel roll under the car (like anti-squat). many times this will lift the inside wheel. but it will stop the front from rolling over (stopping you from flipping). if you have ever seen stadium super trucks (that how they are set up). look at this video -kzfaq.info/get/bejne/esqfdpaDvtzFfas.html - you will see the trucks roll but the outside front wheel is not compressing keeping the truck from flipping (they are also keeping the rear end down - probably from running a lower or neutral roll center in the rear)

I agree, throttle control does seem to have largely gone out of the window, just full throttle at start, dirt everywhere and a car that just donuts or has no stability because the back end can't get traction. Also agree on the aluminium parts, a huge waste of money for useless bling, in my opinion, its a downgrade as the durability suffers due to no ability to negate an impact by flexing.

curious as to your issue with aluminum control arms....I put some on my 2wd slash and I like them...they look nice and have more places on them to attach the front shocks to...4 holes instead of 2....giving more options for adjustments and tweeking of the suspension....same for the rear.

Just found your channel by watching this video. I just got a slash and I got the pink springs that you put in. They are shorter then the stock springs so to take up the slack I had to put in a thick spacer. Now the suspension sits all the way up at full extension ( no sag) is this how you run yours. I was hoping the progressive springs would still let it sag down some but be stiffer to prevent body roll. Thanks

I ran mine with the medium spacers. This makes the arms level. You can drill a small hole in the spring retainers and secure the retainer to the spring with a small zip tie.

If i put 25wt oil in the shocks, put the pink springs in, low cg chassis, and get trenchers on a 2wd vxl slash, would that be a good setup for parts? I dont want to spend like 400-500 dollars on parts for a 300 dollar car because people say that the barring carriers, castor blocks, A arms, and shocks aren't very strong and upgrading them is pretty expensive considering a good set of shocks is around 100-140 dollars and the plastic suspension components cost around 10 dollars per front and per rear sets. That adds up to be very expensive.
@RobertNES816

You have to setup the suspension for what works best for your driving habits and conditions. So basically play around with spring and oil weights. Don't wast money on useless upgrades like shocks or aluminum parts.

Hello Robert. Just bought my first rc car for my Grandson here in Uk, entry level slash 2wd. As he will be be running on tarmac most of the time I bought the pink front springs as you recommended but on fitting found a problem. When I lift the front of the body and the suspension is hanging down fully, the spring drops down the shock leaving a gap, approx 3/4 inch between the top of the spring and the bottom of the shock cap. I e mailed Traxxas support and they told me to use spacers at the top but that will raise the ride height which is undesirable. I watched your video again and you do not use spacers and your suspension does not appear to drop further than the spring in its uncompressed state. What am I doing wrong ? I would welcome your help.
@RobertNES816
@RobertNES816 2 жыл бұрын
I never had an issue with the springs. But if you're worried about the lower shock cups coming off you can use some silicone rubber as a temporary glue to keep the shock cups in place so they won't fall out. But as the space when the shocks are fully extended it's really not an issue an has no impact on the trucks performance.

@@RobertNES816 Thank you Robert. I do not understand why I cannot achieve what you show in the video. I wonder if Traxxas have changed the springs ? The replacement pink springs are a lot shorter than the stock springs (The pink spring are approx the same length of the stock spring when the weight of the car is being supported by the later and the axles are level ) so I cannot achieve your set up without doing something else. I take note of what you say but I am not happy with the arrangement because over a small jump the shock will be taking the whole load until the spring engages and the action will hardly be smooth or progressive and frankly, in my opinion, is not sound engineering. Unless I can find a solution I will dump the springs and go another route. Thanks for your prompt response though. Regards Roy
@RobertNES816
@RobertNES816 2 жыл бұрын
@@roywarden2530 well those springs are intended to be used with a spacer. They're more for the 4x4 trucks which are heavier and do need preload spacers in the front. With my Slash the pink springs are shorter then the stock springs are. I've actually jumped that slash several feet in the air with no issues. You'll bend a shock shaft before you damage anything else, the stock shock shafts are a weak point on the Slash, they do bent very easy. I've installed the hardened shock shafts Traxxas offers. That corrects that issue. But handling and jumping wise the shorter front springs has zero effect on drivability.

Running on pavement with my 2wd Slash VXL Brushless with 3 cell lips, the front will not stay down. I have added weights to the front and it still comes up, flips over backwards, and tears up the body. I cannot hit full throttle without walking to put it back on its wheels. I’ve added weight to the nose, changed to 45 weight shock oil, and have increased the stiffness of the front and rear springs. It’s better, but not great at all. I have a new body to put on, but I’m refraining from putting it on because it’ll look like the old body in 5 minutes. How do I get the front to stay down?

Robert NES816 Ok. Thanks for the information. I will move the battery forward and hopefully add more weight to the nose of the truck. This issue has plagued me since I got the truck about 4 years ago. I have a new body to put on because the original is cracking away, but I don’t want to destroy a new body in the matter of a few minutes. It would defeat the purpose of adding a new body.
