Redcat got me into rock crawling...back when the only real options were the $300 axial ax10, I bought the redcat RS10. It wasn't a scale truck, but had a simple frame, very trick 4 wheel steering and MOA axles. It could out-crawl any $300+ scale truck, especially after a few free mods. The RS10xt is still under $200 today and is a good option for anyone wanted to rock crawl on a budget.

Thanks for the comparison review for a returning beginner. I was considering both of these for a hardbody trail truck project that will probably make both pretty heavy. The Traxxas is the better climber but the Redcat is close. I consider the Scout body and mounting a bonus. Redcat for my project.

Awesome video. I was in the market for my first scaler recently and it was between these two. Ultimately the silver bits on the gen 8 started to bug me and that was the MAIN reason I leaned towards the TRX4. Silly reason but it is what is. Glad to see I picked the more capable rig out of the box.

Coming from someone who has owned a Gen 7 and a Gen 8 PACK and now a TRX4. The TRX4 is hands down the best. It's does everything very well not perfect at anything and not horrible at anything. It's a very neutral yet solid truck for the price.
@utrak
@utrak 5 жыл бұрын
Great video, very interesting, though I think a more fair comparison would be against other budget brand entry level crawlers. The trx4 sport is only down to near-budget price because of its throwaway body, stripped features and zero extras. The gen 8 is basically a 200 dollar rtr with a 100 dollar body. The tr4 is a 300+ dollar rtr with a cheap body.

Seems a fair comparison supported with real world runs. On the one hand the Redcat Gen8 does look so much more especially for the money but the Traxxas has had a substantial headstart that Redcat will have to put the time in to prove it's worth. All in all a win for us the consumers!

I have two Redcat Gen 8s a TRX4 Bronco a TRX6, and my most recent purchase for myself was the TRX4 Sport. My Traxxas trucks break far less parts, have a higher build quality, larger after market for parts, and outperform my Redcats. Started with a Gen 8 Axe edition and have had a lot of downtime with it. Some things like having to Dremel out cross-threaded drive shaft grub screws, poor steering geometry, and clattery drivetrain and vulnerable servo steering arm and servo made me look elsewhere. The less stuff they break the more time we get to spend on the trail together. And that's what I value most at the end of the day.

I have to tell ya I have a gen 8 scout 2 I run all factory and I have a way smaller turning radius then your video shows my throttle is a lot smoother then you described and I personally would put mine against a traxxas 4 sport any day. That is the reason. I did not get a traxxas I have friends who run them and personally drove them etc. Now mine is also brand new so I suppose there is a possibility that redcat changed a lot since the video was made but

😃👍Nice comparison. I have both and been running the gen 8 in the same spots as I do my TRX4 and I found the only thing better on the gen 8 is the body looks better and the servo is a bit more powerful and that's it everything else about the trx4 is better. no faults about the trx4 it's made right and goes anyplace better than the gen 8, the gen 8 is a cool rig though but not in the same category as the trx4. A trx4 is a Swiss watch and the gen 8 is just a normal watch.

I thing the Gen 8 is more aimed at entry level beginners. It also is aimed some what more to the "scale" detail oriented guys at a bargin price. With the divorced transfer case and front mount motor you can easily get a full scale interior in to the truck without amputating your driver figures. Also the scale exterior details really are top notch. On the steering angle issue it is improved with a better servo. My buddies TRX4 Denfender and my new Gen 8 both using the same 20kg all metal servo (both upgraded $18 USD on Amazon) with aluminum horn have nearly identical turning radius. Both trucks benefited from the better servo, but I have not measured the actual Gen 8 steering angle degree but my guess is still not a full 47*. The memory foam is great in spring/summer/fall Phoenix AZ (Home office of Redcat) but I always switch to 2 stage foams. To protect my front steering horn on the Gen 8 I added an aftermarket TRX4 front skid (looks good too!). The Gen 8 receiver is water proof so the box does not need to be. Bottom line for competition or all performance the TRX4 is the way to go. For details, looks, bargin, and performance better than anything you could get 3 or more years ago (RTR) the Gen 8 is what the doctor ordered. In these types of reviews I don't think people remember just how far scale crawlers have come in the time from when the first Axial SCX10 came out. The Gen 7 is close relative to the SCX10 (design wise) and is blast to drive, and these 2 newer trucks are miles ahead design wise over the Gen 7. It really is a great time to be in RC crawling and I think it will still get a lot better in the next 5 years.

For the waterproofing the redcat has a conformal coating on the receiver so water won’t damage it. It is better to drill a hole in the bottom to let the water flow freely and just take it out and let it dry later.

@@stinky3shoes491 lol.. I mentioned the $400 in another channel. Think that will be right there stepping on Vanquish's toes. btw, for my group.. maybe driving style or the areas we go, the Axial's need upgrades to keep up with the TRX's in the durability department. Sometimes that flexy Axial plastic don't cut it when in a bind and just flex flex flex without progression. Don't get me wrong, after spending $2k on my Wraith.. none of my group can keep up with it. But you can't win if you can't cross the finish line, which the Wraith has failed to do twice out of about 12 runs.

I know my previous comments about the Redcat Scout II may make it seem like I believe its the better between the TRX-4 (pick your version) and that I don't like the TRX-4. But I will point out that I have 5 TRX-4's, and don't consider myself a Traxxas fanboy. Just give me a rig that can perform nearly or better for less money, without having to do a bunch of upgrades and aesthetic add ons, then count me in. I don't have a single rig out of my 21, and the Scout will make 22, that I haven't had to modify to make it stronger (durability), faster or better performing. Thus far, it is the Axial Wraith, Yeti, and SCX10 II that have cost me the most to get to the performance and looks that I am happy with. I am sure my wallet is going to open for the Redcat Scout II as well. I found your current comparison to be fair and of no surprise. There is a small flaw to your turning test, very small, but the Scout II does have a slightly longer wheelbase, so even if the steering angles were identical with the same tires and foams, the Scout will still have the larger turning radius. As for recommending one over the other it is still going to come down to what it will be used for (terrain and speed), what is the degree of modification your willing to do with current and future parts. So far I can't say that you can go wrong with a Scout II for beginning in the hobby or just letting your own creativity rule in making it a top performer and looking good in the process.

Very good insight as I thought the same thing. So the TRX4 Sport is 12.3" and the Gen 8 is 12.5" wheelbase. Wheelbase matters a little bit with these differences but not that much. Maybe an inch or two in diameter? I have a TRX4 Defender which is 12.8", fully locked diffs. The steering radius is quite a bit smaller than the Gen 8 as well.

I fixed the steering radius issue and the jerky throttle modulation of the Gen 8!!! I have a video to be released later. Anybody know what it is? The great news is the Gen 8 is capable of very tight radius turns. Also, it can throttle modulate very well with that motor and esc stock.

Hope it wasn't the trims, don't know how many times that has bitten us in my group. But I could guess maybe a longer servo horn to get more throw and for the throttle, maybe pinion spur mesh.
@RCReviewChannel

@@TerraQuestRC Nope, but related. Out of the box, the steering exponential adjust was absolutely maxed out and that was a clue. Putting a longer servo horn would have put that steering arm even farther away with a steeper angle.

Great review. Gen 8 upgrades are available now and more coming soon. All upgrades are listed on their site. I think the first thing people do is upgrades, servo, tires, portel covers, c hubs, axle housings and so forth. The link mounts and transfer case hump is an easy fix. I feel end result is that Redcat has a great start and I am excited to build on something different than the norm. Also, I would like to see you do a review on the RGT 86100 Jeep. It comes out of the box at around $270.00 fully waterproofed and from what I have seen appears to climb with the best of them.

That's very encouraging. The key is to get upgrades from the established third-party companies. We love that they're releasing 3d print files for free! 4 different authentic scale grills that can be 3d printed by anyone for example. Perfect fit.

RCReview agreed, third party companies are key but the aluminum upgrades now available and the soon coming additional aluminum upgrades are a great step to get the ball rolling. I feel the Gen 8 will breath a much needed light to a mostly stagnant base of parts that really haven’t changed for some time due to these trucks that have been out for awhile now. I see all of the third party companies jumping aboard due to the fact they have a chance to capitalize on the Gen 8 and its ability to increase their product line. I am excited to see crawling grow and it can not if we only stick with the same old same old. I believe Redcat has done a great job by pushing the bar. This is good especially from a company that has basically been crap for a long time.

I am both trucks and one thing I do disagree with is the tires. The stock Gen 8 tires Are much better in my opinion. They work better in dirt they work better on rocks most importantly they look better and they are bead locks. While Traxxas has a glue on wheel which is not very impressive. And the memory foam works well just got a break it in.

Good review and points. Based on what I've seen so far, I think I'll be content with holding onto my HPI Venture FJ, which is probably also a better platform than the Gen 8 (with the inclusion of CVD's, which are slowly being released. I waited a month for my back-order to finally get filled). I do like the Scout II body, though, so I'll probably get one to mount on one of my existing platforms.

I watched this video a couple of times, along with many others, prior to making my choice and eventually went with the Redcat Gen 8. The primary reason being the scale looks of the Scout II. The issues with the Redcat are fairly negligible compared to the toyish/plastic look of the TRX4 Sport - plus the body posts - yuck! I would have to have invested another $100 to get to the level of aesthetics of the Gen 8, I wanted something that is fun to watch crawl around because it looks scale. I also like the metal parts of the Redcat, they look nice, are functional enough for my needs, and thus far have proven to be reliable. Thank you for the outstanding videos man - fun stuff.

I felt the review was very honest given that Traxxas TRX4 Sport has been around much longer along wit the loads of aftermarket upgrades, it’s a much more reliable rig but with that Said I love the Gen 8 platform, it can be a really cool project for the avid hobbyist to find solutions to the downsides you’ve pointed out. It could be a trail truck as is or it can serve as a rock machine with some minor improvements one suggestion is to maybe equip it with a stinger style bumper, add a front skid plate to kinda help with climbing steep inclines and probably put some 2.2’s on it to give it a little more ground clearance but I’m not sure if it can accept bigger tires due to the fixed wheel wells or maybe trying some longer shocks to help raise the chassis but all and all it can work out if you just give it a little TLC. If outfitted properly it can be a cool trail truck or maybe a camper with roof rack LED light bar and whatever the avid hobbyist chooses to do with it. I’d love to see one dressed up and out on the trail. Thanks for the vid and in-depth analyst for both trucks as always good job man.

Thought for the day? I do wonder how many people knocking the redcat have driven both? Or even seen the redcat gen 8 in the flesh? I'll give it a fair test before modifying it, my trial run around the yard in the wet? Tires seemed to slip a lot more than I'd like, but that's an easy change. One thing to note about climbing performance, the redcat has a 17T motor and the Traxxas a 21T motor so the Traxxas will have more torque. I've a spare axial 35T motor on the side? Should I put that in guys? With better tires and motor I can see the redcats weight distribution coming in to play.

I think if you change the motor of the Redcat Gen8 for a 550 motor, something like 21T or 27T that will be a very good upgrade. And get it engine and specs wise to the same level as the TRX-4.

Only thing that kept me from running straight to the Sport is I have to have inner fenders, I know they have plans for them, just taking too long to get them out. I did get a Sport, having inner fenders from Traxxas won't fit well with the body I chose for it, so will just have to be using crafting foam.
