Yeah 80s feel for sure. Others have mentioned who the rapper was. But the dude that's 1/2 of Gorillaz (Damon Albarn) is also from a band (Blur) which formed in the late 80s & had a bunch of hits in the 90s. The other 1/2 of Gorillaz is Jamie Hewlett (the animator) who is best known for the Tank Girl comics which also came out in the late 80s. So your intuition was correct--it's got the 80s all over it.

I worked in a head shop when I was in college, and we wore out two copies of this CD in a year.

They’re not a real group. It’s a bunch of musicians and artists collaborating to make a virtual group. It was created by Damon Albarn from Blur (he sings on most tracks) and cartoonist Jamie Hewlett. They work with hip-hop producer (one of my favs) Dan the Automator as well as Danger Mouse. They have features such as Del the Funkee Homosapian (who raps on this track)(Hieroglyphics, Deltron 3030), De La Soul, Shaun Ryder, Bobby Womack, Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads), Mos Def, Vince Staples, Roots Manuva, MF DOOM, Miho Hatori (Cibbo Matto), Lou Reed (Velvet Underground) and a ton of other musicians. I’d recommend checking out the track with Vince Staples live at the Life is Beautiful festival. The song is called Ascension.

Fun fact (maybe) he was going through a real bad heroine addiction when he made this album and you definitely get that vibe listening to the whole album. The best for this song was also the rock 1 preset on his keyboard/music machine.

Kinda funny they miss shot the entire lyrics from the start. He isn't happy, he's feeling glad which means he's masking it. Sunshine in a bag refers to him stuffing away his joy becoming emotionless. "Rhythm. You have it or you don't, that's a fallacy", meaning that is a false thought, you don't have it or don't. You can always develop rhythm and the whole idea that you're born with it is false.

This is a dope track, and the video really makes it. But the rapping is... very simplistic and low hanging fruit. At least for me. Listen to the alternative version with Phi Life Cypher. It's not the standard for a easily digested hit, but the lyrics and delivery are so much stronger. And it even has a synth vibe to it that I'm sure was inspired by some oldschool Newcleus - Computer Age.
