Tread Lightly! Four Wheel Drive Way Jeep Badge of Honor Trail - Ocala National Forest, Florida

After a two-month break in Central Florida, for Brian’s surgery and recovery, our first stop on our travels northwards was the Ocala National Forest where we took on the off-roading challenge of the Tread Lightly! Four Wheel Drive Way Trail, a Jeep Badge of Honor trail.
The trail offers 81 miles of off-road trails for Jeeps and other 4WD vehicles, open year round, weather permitting. The trail is divided by Florida State Road 40 into two sections, a northern and southern. The Jeep Badge of Honor trail check-in point is located at GPS coordinates 29.176º N 81.782º W where you will find a Tread Lightly! kiosk with trail information and a QR code you can scan to download a digital interactive map of the trail.
Challenged by several downed tree branches and trees the blocked the trail, we managed to complete the southern portion on our first day, camping that night at the Big Scrub OHV Campground, and attempted the northern section of the trail on the following day.

That's a good trail system. I live in the area and that's my go to trail. and yes rain will definitely make it a lot of fun.

How many miles is that trail and how long does it take to ride through?

is it okay to cut the downed trees, and move them out f the way? Or does the Forestry Service want to do that? The trail is a few hours away, and I would love to drive it. We have cleared trees before, and wouldn't mind working that to have more access.

From what I understand it is ok to cut a downed tree. You can not trim trees off the trail. I was out there yesterday and had a tree across the trail was able to drag it out of the way.

It is ok to cut or move the trees that have fallen over onto the trail. Be sure to download a trail map before you arrive in case there is no cell service. Enjoy!

Could you tell me how you have your patches attached to the headliner?

We used the hook-side of the 2-inch industrial strength heavy-duty stick on Velcro. We cut it out to the size of the patch, then peel off the protective film on the Velcro and stick it on the patch. Then you attach the patch to the fabric headliner. How long is the trail and how long did it take you to drive it

It's over 80 miles of trail system. The Tread Lightly part will take a FULL Day

Total trail length is approximately 81 miles. We did the southern portion of the trail in 5 hours, but that included all the delays and by-passes taken due to the downed trees and blocked trail sections. Due to the conditions of the trails, we were not able to complete the northern section of the trails. Philip Hardy's estimate of a full day to complete the entire trail is pretty accurate. I went a couple weeks ago and it was wet. Not as wet as I thought it would be, but some of the water crossings had some big holes and a muddy bottom. That may cause a few challenges for a stock Jeep. There was one section that we backed out of because the water was getting too deep (hood high on a lifted JK).

This reply is late in coming, but we would be extremely cautious taking on this trail in a stock Jeep. Just be prepared to adjust your route depending on challenges or conditions you may run across that aren't suitable for a stock Jeep. And make sure to download a trail map before you arrive in case you have to adjust your route. Safe travels!
